Honestly as someone who did the cliché thing and spent his twenties in NYC , I recommend the experience to just about anyone. Even if they think its not for them, because it is still singular and extremely hard to replicate anywhere else and I cannot deny the impact it has made in my life and I wouldn't trade the years for anything. If you're *kinda* into the idea, go for it. and yeah that ambient *danger* is half the fun tbh lol it pushed me out of my comfort zone. I'm a third culture kid, who has lived in a bunch of cities, who had a lot of ideas about what to expect and what I could handle. That place completely tore that shit apart. I would only ever do it in my twenties and only with an exit plan because lifers who survive that unique state, are an exceptionally rare breed because it is *hard*. I cannot stress it enough like you said it takes guts to be there one, three , five , ten , twenty years. It is *hard* , its hard to see really close friends leave, its hard to keep grasp of a place that is perpetually moving forward and changing and that is before the tangibles (material monetary cost/cost to your psyche/etc). Sometimes in ways that you won't understand or will be increasingly alien to you. But there's no where else I've lived on this planet that hits the same. When you're positioned to experience what it has to offer (this is both luck and a privilege) jump in! Just uh , don't wear your nice shoes and remain flexible for the endless barrage of curve balls.

I went for my birthday (26) this past June, and maybe it’s because I grew up in the suburbs but wow even though I don’t think I could live there which is EXTREMELY HARD to begin with, I always find myself missing it though. After spending most of this year pretty stressed & depressed, it was exactly the zinger I needed to get back up. It truly does not hit the same which is probably why I’m already planning for the next trip😂

@_iboji Жыл бұрын
@@pluto3603 I'd be hard pressed to summarize my experience in a single YT comment but its not JUST the concentration of people (you can get that in any comparable major city) its the the weird push pull. The space between the hard to describe chaotic energy you've felt if you've visited and extremely weird sense of community even most introverted (raises hand) person will find themselves in in spite of it. I won't romanticize it totally; I often felt stressed, exhausted, broke and isolated. The city can be dreary and feel dystopian (you'll feel economic inequality *sharply* don't let nobody lie to you about it). I can't deny the humanizing connections I made with people I'd see everyday who turned into quick friends simply because we shared in a struggle that the place makes so tangible and in your face. Despite the city's reputation, you'd get this weirdly positive energy from complete random strangers on a spring Friday commute simply because we survived another week/winter/whatever and this isn't something you have to explain. You'll feel utterly disgusting in the summer simply trying to get around...you'll have many sketchy subway rides.... you'll see your checking account empty....you'll regularly wonder why you'd subject yourself to any of it. Then you'll experience a snowy night in the city that actually occasionally manages to be quiet and how weird and beautiful it is... Or you'll get to do some-thing that definitely would not have been a thing in my case from the small town I'm from. you might achieve something major in whatever career you're pursuing because you kept working at it long enough for your luck to meet you at your grit you'll find joy in some small random cramped dive you actually look forward to getting cheap happy hour drinks in because almost everyone there is from somewhere else (often somewhere far!) and you do actually feel welcome (and its not weird because the people there likely have seen it all) ..but then you'll also find it shuttered unceremoniously months later. you'll get weirdly defensive when friends/family visit and shit on it for not being "stable" or "safe" (read: boring) or homogenous enough. And like none of this shit is assured , your individual mileage will vary. But the sheer number of collisions in the experiences of the people who are there so much FEELS possible. Yet it never REALLY claims to be comfortable and it wouldn't because it isn't. IDK I really haven't gotten the same exact mix of all of this anywhere else.

Hi Tina😊 As someone who has been moving around all her life wondering where my true "home" would be, the intro hit hard. I've felt the same way about LA the way you feel about New York. It's been my dream to live in LA ever since I was little. Finally made it happen by moving to the city this year, but within a few months of being here, I quickly realized that even my dream city was not the answer to all of my prayers. I love it here and I believe that there is certainly a city/country that brings out the best in each person, but I'm learning that it's up to me to open up my heart and make myself feel at home wherever I may be.
@khalilahd. Жыл бұрын
“The reason I feel more alive in NY is because the threat of death is more immanent” THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I WANT TO MOVE OUT OF THE COUNTRY. It’s kind of sad that the US is basically known for that at this point but to agree with your bigger point you’re right. Home or belonging is within you. You don’t have to be tied down to a place. Love to see you grow and evolve ❤

There was this man in the bible named King Solomon and mentioned there that he was the wisest man who lived yet despite his great wealth and wisdom he said “Everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 2). Still can be applied today, isn’t it? The wealthiest and smartest according to Forbes aren’t the happiest. Inside our heart is a longingness that can’t be filled by people, material things, or places. Are we chasing the wrong things? But what if someone tells you that regardless of who you are and your status, you are deeply loved and that you are worthy. What if that someone can give you security and fill you to the brim with joy not just on this side of the earth but upto eternity. I will leave it with this verse “What’s the price of a pet canary? Some loose change, right? And God cares what happens to it even more than you do. He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail-even numbering the hairs on your head! So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk. You’re worth more than a million canaries.” Matthew 10:29-31 MSG
