I have a cat with the same condition. He is now almost 5 years old and is the sweetest thing ever. His name is the Arabic word for Honey. I was gonna call him clumsy but then thought that would be nasty. He manages his daily routine just like any normal cat would! love him to bits

Yes! CH cats seem very clumsy. But that is why the are loved so much. The fight through their struggles and never quit. How do you pronounce the Arabic word for Honey?

@@markchanner3616 Assal but my baby's is a nickname so it's Assool. The first letter is not one of the english alphabets but maybe if you copy and paste this عسل onto google, you can get the proper pronounciation 😊

This kitty so so much like mine! It's so funny to me when I explain she has a disability. I don't really see it as one. I don't "pitty" her. She can do anything she put her mind to. She gets on my bed, she climbs up on the bed, couch, goes up and downstairs, gets in and out of the litterbox. She does fine! Sometimes she has to adapt like, instead of jumping she sort of sinks in her front paws and then pulls her bum up lol

Yes! I completely agree that CH cats do not need pity. They just need an understanding adopting parent to give them a safe home. Then that parent is rewarded more than they could ever expect. CH cats are just as independent as other cats. I have learned that the only time Weeble wants my help is when she "runs" over to my daughter's aquarium and gives me "the look" to lift her up so that she can watch the fish.

We went to a local shelter to adopt another cat/kitten when we lost our 8 year old to a tumor. We ended up with 2. One we suspect has CH (never heard of it before). We couldn't leave him in the shelter as we felt he would not get adopted. The more we watched him, the more we suspected there was something wrong. He's still skittish at times but seems to be coming around. He loves his new siblings - and we love having him. He has stolen our hearts from the very beginning. I do hope he lives a long life! Thank you for the video - this is how Shyloe is and it was encouraging knowing that he will be ok.

I know a family that took in a litter with CH. These kitties are both fun to watch, but it is also sad when they fall over while losing control. They are nice kitties and with just a little bit of patience and accommodation, they are living a good life. It is great there are people that give these little creatures a chance.

Kitties with mild CH may seem adorable but please keep in mind, moderate to severe cases require a great deal of work and expense for some health issues. You should be an experienced cat owner to adopt a moderate or severe case. This will include helping kitty stay clean when she or he falls in their poop. Also very sensitive digestion, blindness and deafness can occur. I have two CH kitties I’ve taken care of for 14 years and it is work. I love them both and it’s been rewarding but please be sure you are up to adopting moderate of severe CH kitties.

Thanks for posting this! Weeble is so much like our Checkers! A few months ago I fell in love with this kitty's eyes & had to go see about adopting him. During my visit I noticed how clumsy he seemed, and was told they suspect CH. I'd never heard of that, nor ever cared for an animal with a "condition". I was concerned he might have trouble with our stairs, or the concrete floor in the basement, but, those eyes! We all love our wonky kitty who doesn't quite know how to cat. He has adapted just fine.

After reading this i am crushed, its my second time fostering kittens and one of them started to wobble like this i had no idea what was going on. I panicked and called the shelter which told me to bring them the kitten. He was euthanized and they gave us little to no information why. I know that the shelter is thin on money because of the amount of cats... I would of kept the kitten if i knew he could be fine, he was the most energetic and happy of the bunch. Hard times I even offered a large Donation for his visit to the vet since i know financially for them its difficult... i hate everything about what i just experienced :(

Thanks for making this video! I just learned about CH and never thought I'd see other kitties who move like mine. I'm comforted to find that so many sources say it's a non-degenerative condition! It's heartbreaking to learn about the really severe cases though. Wanted to note that if a cat's coordination is too impaired to walk outside on their own, you may still be able to help them safely enjoy outdoors stimuli with a soft-sided cat backpack (make sure to get one with lots of airflow, and clip the zippers together for security), a cat stroller, or an enclosed catio.

The reason for the gait disturbance is there is a portion of the cerebellum that Tells you where you are in space. Like the finger to nose test. I have an 18 year old cat that I adopted when he was 3 weeks old. Although the condition is not progressive, in more severe cases there may be some neurogenic pain. Also more head Neck spams. My vet put him on gabapentin (which has been found to reduce painful spasms in humans with multiple sclerosis). His head/neck spasms have been mostly controlled and he no longer is so reactive to touch about his back legs and around his head. He can’t walk much anymore mostly due to age but he’s been my buddy for 18 years and it’s been rewarding to watch him develop and cope with his “disability”.

I have a cat with CH, Freddie Boo Boo. When I reach down to pet him, he falls over then just rolls over for "tummy rubs". CH cats are lovers and perpetual kittens. They don't know they are "different'. I put "kitty stairs" next to my bed so he could join the pile of cats at night.. CH cats don't know how to fight but they never present a threat so they get along with everyone. Many CH cats are put down which is a shame - they are a joy to be around. Freddie will bed 9 this year. HA, when I was renovating my home, they had to put the cat tower outside and there was Freddie, right up on the top every morning sleeping safely. (I have a large Catio) so I now have two cat towers--; Thank you for sharing your wobbly cat with us...
@markchanner3616
@markchanner3616 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your story! You are 100% correct on everything you said. What you say about Freddie Boo Boo almost describes Weeble to a "T". She falls over for tummy rubs, never fights back when the other cats "show their dominance" (and are overwhelmed by her affection). Weeble never presents a threat, always uses the kitty stairs and is a complete joy to be around. Your description of CH cats being perpetual kittens is a great way to describe them. The only difference is that Weeble has been staying away from the upper sections of the cat towers recently but I believe that will change soon as the weather gets colder here in the North and Weeble wants to get up off of the cooler floor.

@@markchanner3616 Also, when I renovated my home I uncovered wood floors. My CH kitty, Freddie BooBoo cannot walk on wood floors. I had to make a path of carpets for him to get around on.Do you know why this is? Is it a trackson issue?A "new nuss" issue? He can't seem to "get a grip" on slippery wood. I'm with him - I have MS and I fall more often on wood floors--;
@markchanner3616
@markchanner3616 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear about your MS. I can only imagine what a struggle that must be. Weeble depends heavily on her claws to grip the carpet and rugs to keep her balance. I am sure that Freddie Boo Boo need to do the same to help maintain his balance. From what I see from our other two non-CH cats, they do not use their claws to navigate while walking. Weeble DOES use her claws while walking to help her with her balance. Quite often I see her gripping the carpet when she has her little stumbles. All three of our cats use their claws to help them accelerate or in fast cornering when running, so to me, it would make sense for Weeble to do the same while walking. The only place in our home that is not carpeted or have rugs, is in the kitchen where there is just linoleum. Weeble has more problems in there. She likes to make a LOT of contact with me while I am preparing food the cats breakfast feeding and she falls once in a while while doing this. I assume it is because she has nothing to grip onto. Weeble has also gotten very good at holding on with her back claws when getting down, head first, from the higher platforms on the cat towers. It is as if she is part squirrel. She is NOT always successful at getting herself down safely. I believe using her claws like this can be painful for her, but is a must if she doesn't want to get hurt in a fall (which she has done on several occasions). We always help her get down from the upper cat tower platforms when we see that she has snuck up there.

@@markchanner3616 Thank you so much. I have two other cats, Tiger, age 6 and Martha, age 7 months (I spent the quarantine fostering three orphaned kittens then couldn't give one back). Tiger gave Martha a devil of a time until she reached sexual maturity. Seems like when Tiger knew what Martha was (a female), he chilled out and started playing and cuddling with her. But Freddie Boo Boo was a hoot. Tiger is a drama queen. He would scream at Martha, Martha would run from him and Freddie Boo Boo would sleep through the whole thing. I knew when Martha had reached sexual maturity by her response to catnip - that's when the entire interaction changed with Tiger and Martha becoming friends. All my cats are neutered and spayed. But that brought up another question about CH cats. Freddie Boo Boo sleeps VERY deeply. When I first adopted him from the local Humane Society 8 yrs. ago at age 3 months, I had a real scare. As I closed the house for the night, I noted Freddie was sound asleep on a kitchen rug. When I went to turn off my night light, Freddie was still asleep on the rug in the kitchen. I fetched him and put him on my bed, still asleep. In the middle of the night I stretched my foot out and he didn't move. I got up, shook him gently, called his name - nothing! I picked up[ his limp body. I yelled at him, shook him, took him out into the cold winter air, even tried to give him mouth to mouth - lol = I knew he wasn't dead because he was still warm and pliable. After lying gim on the kitchen countertop, he yawned, hoped down, and headed right to the litter box. Had him checked out at the vet first thing in the morning. "kittens sleep hard" replied the vet. My CH kitty, always sleeps very hard. I think he could sleep through a car hitting our home Is this just a quirk of his or do CH cats sleep hard? Come to think of it, although he plays, he always has a sleepy look to him. He kind of diddle-y-bops through the house listing to the left, face looking down without a care in the world. The other cats could race right over him and Freddie Boo Boo will look up, yawn and roll over on his back. CH kitties don't have the strength to wash their bums like "normal" cats, they spay their legs open -HA! Every time you look at them you just can't keep from smiling. My best to you and Weeble for a long happy life--,
@markchanner3616
@markchanner3616 3 жыл бұрын
Like Weeble, it sounds like Freddie Boo Boo has quite the personality! Weeble similarly cleans her bum with difficulty and splayed legs, but she still gets the job done. Weeble always keeps herself clean with normal preening and her soft fur always smells good. She does need to be brushed regularly because she gets snarls, and she has always loved to be brushed. The snarls usually form on her haunches near her tail where it is hard for her to get to. Weeble is not the hard sleeper that Freddie Boo Boo is. It may be because Weeble was feral for the first year of her life and was always on high alert. She still has some lingering trust issues that go back to her feral life. She hides when any "stranger" comes into the house and will not come out until they are gone. Before the youngest daughter moved out, Weeble would follow her around the house like a puppy looking for a treat. Now when my daughter comes to visit, Weeble acts as if she too is a stranger and hides. Other than the "Stranger Danger" issue, Weeble is a very relaxed cat.

Thanks for your reply! It does take a little extra prep for a CH cat. You are going to adore your new special fur baby! We have found that the more floor rugs/carpet the better. Weeble uses her claws a lot more for balance than our non-CH cats and has a harder time balancing on hard floors with nothing to grip onto. We also purchased some "pet stairs" (carpeted portable steps) that help her access the bay window and the bed she prefers to sleep on. We also have cat towers of various sizes that Weeble loves to climb and sleep on. She can't always get to the top of the tallest towers, but it doesn't keep her from trying. You are going to find the your CH cat is VERY special.

Since I got my cat as a kitten, I always thought he had CH. at the vet he doesn’t move bc he’s so scared so they never diagnosed him, but watching this video confirmed my thoughts! He is EXACTLY like Weeble! Stays low to the ground when playing, back legs always faster than front, falls when playing or walking (back legs/butt go down first), can’t jump on hard surfaces- he needs fabric to grab onto, jumping down is WAY harder than getting up, and the tremors! I think it makes him so unique and adorable and honestly way easier bc he never jumps on counters so I can leave food out, have a fish with an open top, and put plants on a table- he can’t get to any of it! Love my CH kitty more than anything in the world ❤️

Sounds like you have an adorable kitten! CH cats are really special. Weeble surprises me all the time with new things even though she is 4+ years old now. This week she learned how to carry her fuzz ball around the house while meowing as she "runs". She learned that from one of our other cats that she has been watching do that same thing. And yes, it is nice to not have to worry about CH cats getting up on the counters!

Mild CH I think is a blessing for an indoor cat. It does make them buff on the front and a skinny bum. And running like a crazy crab is always funny. Plus they don't jump on your kitchen tops. The worst is they have a bad aim in the litter box. They do like belly rubs more than any normal cats. And they always fall over when they do the around the legs love you and become a trip hazard. There are different severity of ch, when it's very severe, they won't be able to walk at all, and it would be a huge challenge to toilet and clean themselves. Mild to moderate ch, walking and low level climbing is the minimum for a cat to live with minimal human support. For severe CH, it demands a lot of effort and attention that most owners would be unable to provide to keep the cat happy

@markchanner3616
@markchanner3616 3 жыл бұрын
Cerebellar Hypoplasia does not get worse, but it does not get better either since it is an underdevelopment of the brain's cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex contains the balance center. depending on how under developed this is determines how bad the CH is. From what I have researched and from my personal experience with Weeble, cats will adjust throughout their life time, which makes it seems like they are a little better, but that depends on the individual cat and how severe the CH is. Weeble has been with us for four years now and she still surprises me by doing things I didn't think she could do. She recently started to make big lunges to "attack" a string as I pull it in a circle around her. She recently figured out that lunging, instead of chasing in a circle, she will not fall down as often and will catch the string more often. It was a small adjustment, but a big step in her learning process. There is no treatment, but I have found if you keep them active (play with them every day chasing toys, string and the like) they adjust to their CH better. As another commenter had previously said, CH cats are perpetual kittens. Weeble loves to play and even begs like a dog when she wants me to play with her. CH cats are also smart. My daughter taught Weeble to sit and shake her paw when treats are offered. Enjoy your special fur baby!

hello. How well can CH cats or Weebles handle going up or down stairs?
@markchanner3616
@markchanner3616 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! We have carpeted stairs so Weeble does very well. If the stairs were not carpeted, she would have difficulty because she needs the carpet to grab onto to keep herself steadied and moving forward. She is slower going up and down that our other cats and uses more of a hopping motion than a running motion going down the stairs. Going up the stairs she uses a more natural walking motion. Other than that, she has no issues with stairs. Most of our house is either carpeted or has rugs. Where there is linoleum or bare flooring, she has a bit more difficulty. In fact, if I bring one of her toys onto a linoleum floor, she will pick in up and bring it over to the carpet. We also use carpeted steps that she can use to access our bay window and one of the beds. I have found that our other cats like to use these step even though they do not need to.

Hi. Does anyone know if they cat present with symptoms later in life? My boy Mozart is almost 7, but has been having symptoms for the past 18 mo ths but I didnt realise, and my vet thinks Mozart has CH. I was very worried at first when doing research, as it seemed very serious until i found they can have mild CH, which makes more sense with Moz as he has all the same symptoms as Weeble, esp the drunk gait, bottom wigglin whilst running, low to the ground playing, and has always been extremely mild tempered. And also has recently presented with more severe symptoms though of difficulty jumping but good at climbling, and difficulty getting down. Any thoughts?

I am NOT a veterinarian, so your vet's advice should always be followed first. Everything I have read about CH says it does not get worse and does not get better. Have there been any other changes with Mozart in the past 18 months such as weight gain? Weight gain can change the center of gravity for CH cats. I have noticed with Weeble that she does tend to fall a bit more since she has gained a pound and a half over the past year. We are in the process of feeding her a bit less so that she can SLOWLY lose this extra weight.

The baby was just spayed 5 days ago and still has snoring sound and slight cough, which her foster said is from the tube from the surgery. . Its worse when she is falling asleep. She runs and plays. But when she sleepy she almost sounds like she snoring. Is this common? I also notice a weird almost yawns like motion almost like a jaw strech. And she has never meowed, ever. Does this seem normal. She also seems to be a bit fussy as she is falling asleep. Moves alot and repositions alot. Does this seem normal. She is going to a vet soon. But they are booked out a bit and I dont wanna run her into an er vet for no reason. I just can go thru another loss. I was looking for a cat to adopt and went to the humane society and the employee told me that one of them had a “condition” that made him or her (can’t remember which) wobble and shake. I can only assume this is what that cat had. I went into the room where the cat was and the cat was really sweet, but definitely wobbled all over the place. If I was a better person I would have taken that cat. Like I said, it seemed very nice, but ultimately I decided that I didn’t want to deal with a “special needs” pet. And that’s ironic because I have epilepsy so both the cat and I have a neurological disorder, so maybe we would have made a good match. I’m a first time cat owner though so maybe I would need more experience before taking on a cat like that. I ended up going somewhere else and adopting a senior cat. She’s very nice too and fits my lifestyle since we’re both pretty lazy. She doesn’t seem to require or want a whole lot of attention.
@markchanner3616
@markchanner3616 2 жыл бұрын
Don't be too hard on yourself for not adopting a CH-er. It also takes a special person to adopt a senior animal. Our Weeble is very has a mild case of CH. She really needs no special attention other than needing a little help down to the floor after she climbs too high on the cat towers. More severe CH cats may come with other issues (seizures, etc.) and need extra attention such as a good cleaning after eating and help using the litter box. Most people that care for CH cats will agree that CH cat also have very special personalities - sweet and very meek. Maybe your next cat can be a "special needs".

@@markchanner3616 I wouldn’t necessarily mind that. I’ve seen some videos of some very severe cases of CH…like so bad where they can’t even walk and need help going to the bathroom. I’m glad there are people out there that can do that sort of thing, but I’ll admit that I’m just not one of them. I’m sure I could take on a cat like yours though. My cat actually barely even uses her tree. She spends the vast majority of her time on the back of my couch. I have a throw blanket that I put over one of the back cushions and that’s her spot. She’s about 12 years old and a little overweight, but still pretty agile. For example she can still jump right from the floor to the back of my couch without any problems. That’s as high as she’ll jump though.

Can CH cats get along with another cat their age or younger? Is it advisable to get another cat for company; playmate?
@markchanner3616

Weeble gets along great with our two other cats. She loves her cat brother and cat sister. I'm not sure if it is true with all CH cats, but I have heard (and seen) that most CH cats tend to be very docile and also tend to be very even tempered. This works out well in a multi-cat family. I would say that there would be a greater chance that there would be issues with the non-CH cat getting along with other cats than a CH cat getting along with non-CHers.

When I originally brought Weeble to the Vet, at first they weren't sure if it was CH or results of an injury. They wanted to X-ray her to make sure but I declined because of the high price of the X-ray. The veterinarian was very curious because she didn't have a lot of experience with CH cats, so she did the X-ray without charging me and that is when she confirmed Weeble had no previous injuries and confirmed she has CH. I was lucky that my daughter worked an the Vet Hospital where we brought Weeble and had been going there with other pets for over 25 years. @markchanner3616
@markchanner3616 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no, there is no medicine to make it better an there is no cure but it doesn't get worse and it doesn't get better. CH is caused by an underdevelopment of the brain's cerebral cortex which contains the balance center. As CH cats age, they learn to adapt to their balance problems which can make them appear to get better, but they will never regain full balancing skills like a "normal" cat. Other than the balance issue, CH cats are normal in every other way. They are smart and love you back just like the non-CH cats. Our Weeble is the smartest and most fun cat I have ever had. She is a hoot. But I do know that from what I have learned and from what I hear form other CH cat owners, they are the best cats to own because they are so loving and playful. Some would say they are perpetual kittens and I would fully agree.

For more severe cases of CH there can be issues that develop with age, including blindness. One of my 14 year olds has one eye deteriorating and he is almost completely blind. Also both my advanced age CH kitties have loose stools from ultra sensitive digestion - which is very messy as you can imagine. Otherwise both are happy and very spoiled - but be sure you know what you are getting into if you adopt a moderate to severe case CH kitty. Their mother had parvovirus btw, and a third kitten from the litter was completely normal. Go figure.
