It’s what I’ve come to think of as secure vs insecure writing. In one situation the story; its craft and components take primacy and the product that arises can be awesome. In the latter, it’s the perception of the character that takes primacy … and so everything’s wagged around in such a fashion to manifest that impression in the audience …. Hence all the heavy handed and blatant telling instead of showing. (Ironically, it’s this insecurity that leads to shittier writing and shittier characters … but that lesson is only open to you if you’re interested in the craft and art and not exclusively preoccupied with THE MESSAGE)

As a female I can FREELY admit that if this were reversed, and if it were _Thor_ who was acting this way towards _Jane,_ (i.e. dismissive, cold, unfeeling, and behaving as though she were "just" another notch on his belt of conquests, so to speak) there would be a public outcry on how "$ex¡$t" this is, how "degrading" this is, and "gender inequality," etc. And the scene of Thor being chained and stripped ("flicked") is bizarre in how it is apparently "okay" to oggle and objectify men, but it's "wrong" to do this to women?? What happened to gender equality?? Or is it the whole, _"Rules for thee but not for me"_ thing again??

Imagine if Jane or Valkyrie were stripped by Zeus and Thor and Korg were laughing at them for it. Thor's schoolboy stammering at Jane and being stripped by Zeus more or less cemented his role in the movie. The God of Thunder, who was introduced to the MCU in 2011, will be reduced to nothing but slapstick and being thrown under the bus. This won't be a dignified passing of the torch.

While I find Hemsworth genuinely a very naturally comedic person, you're so right about the 'schoolboy stammering'. I couldn't quite put it into words but that is one of the things I despise about post Endgame Thor. Generally Thor is my favourite character (a carry over from the comics) but that silly fawning performance just makes Thor look like a berk and that's not who Thor should be. I understand the heightened focus post Ragnarok, on making Thor an easily accessible dullard, but generally even in Ragnarok itself and especially Infinity War, they seemed to do a fantastic job of keeping Thor, Thor. Even in Ragnarok, while there were some silly moments like him letting out a silly scream before the Grandmaster (or the bizarre out of place humour where the God who can take an imploding city to the face is dropped by a bouncy ball), the majority were still him generally being Thor but reacting to the silliness around him. But that silly, goofy 'side' of Thor was so heavily drilled into in Endgame. Remember when Thor was asked about Jane in Ragnarok and he simply commented a quick 'it was a mutual dumping' and then went back to his business? Because he'd moved on and was in another stage of his life. But then with Endgame and now this, they're just going to keep committing to this absolute misstep regarding his character. All to make him the MCU equivalent of the 12 year old with the frosted tips and the flame shirt, by forcing this weirdly emphasized desire for Jane (the awkward '8 years, 5 months 2 days' moment too) like a boy realising his first crush rather than a 1500 year old God who already got the girl and has already been shown to have gotten over Jane maturely when they did then break up.

To be honest, Natalie Portman was not in the third one, nor in any of the Avengers movies - similar to Gwyneth, writers didn't expect her to return thus they didn't include any ongoing storyline. At this point it would have made much more sense to have her jump over from another Universe with a totally different back story; say Thor did lose his powers like in the first, they fell in love and he protected the town from Loki's onslought but in their universe his powers didn't return and he died in her arms. So Mjollnir made it like the Green Lantern ring and picked a new master. There you have it, female Thor with a back story, not emasculating mainline Thor and a reason for her to wield the destroyed hammer, that even the dwarfen smith could not reforge.

I stopped watching super hero movies after Endgame, which was a pretty good movie. My biggest gripe with it wasn't the time travel plot shenanigans, or the Captain Marvel wank-off; it was how they took Thor, a man who had struggled to return to Asgard right after the death of his father, was helpless in Sakaar as his people were ruled and killed by a Tyrant, managed to return to Asgard only to see, and indeed, *cause* his home to be utterly destroyed, then almost immediately lose half of his remaining people to Thanos...and then he rose up *again* to try and save the day, to fall short by inches and be indirectly responsible for not preventing the deaths of trillions of sentients... and then they made him the joke character in Endgame. "Oh look, Thor is fat now! Let's laugh at him." The man has gone through trauma that would break almost anyone else, and they can't even respect that. (Apologies for the run-on sentence earlier.)

@@underthepale RDJ’s compensation was structured so that his guarantee (the downside) was nominal but he got a percentage of the revenue associated with the picture. He priced himself out because he did such a good job and was such a compelling character that the movies became an institution in and of itself. Disney paid $808 million to George Lucas for the Star Bores IP and systematically destroyed its value in less than 10 years. Money wasn’t the issue- it was that Feige had to contend with Robert creatively had he stayed around and Downey would never have stood for what has transpired. Feige would say “we want to feature more strong woman characters Robert”, and Downey would simply say “Kevin, what exactly isn’t strong about Pepper, Natasha, Gamora, the Wasp, Peggy Carter, Nebula and the ones we’ve made?” Downey would say “are you telling me that for a decade we’ve been making movies that minimize our female cast because if that’s been the strategy, I wouldn’t have any part of it.” And Feige wouldn’t be able to say anything because he’d know it was true and what he’s doing would be exposed.

In their attempt to elevate diverse characters they actually end up putting them down by making them derivative of existing characters. @donpietruk15172 жыл бұрын
One of the things that bothers me about the way they write most of the female superheroes in much of the Stage IV Marvel is that they take all the attributes of what can loosely be called "toxic masculinity" in a male character and imbue them to the female superhero. They then look at it and call it good. Very few female characters have their own story arc or if they had one in the comics it often gets ignored. The result is often a character we have no interest in because they are literally not interesting.

Thor had so much possibilities...They could've utilized aspects of the comic and the mythology. They could have brought in Thor's children, Magni, Modi, and Thrud (his daughter, if they wanted a female Thor, they could've adapted his daughter especially if they had Sif be Thor's wife). So much wasted for flinting ideologies that will be forgotten when people wake up to embrace Egalitarianism and mock segregating ideologies. Gary, here's something to enrage you even more or make you smile: They could've done this idea if they were truly creative. Imagine that Thor is the last member of Odin's family line. Thor's father, brothers, and sisters have all passed away, so he is the only one who can assume Odin's role as Rune King Thor. As soon as he ascended the throne, his three children gained the broken pieces of Mjolnir that were forged into their weapons, so they could protect the Realms. So, instead of losing One Protector, we gain three. Imagine a passing of the torch that isn't beyond retarded, but more sentimental. Like a father putting his children in charge of his old responsibilities while he is trying to rule Asgard. Additionally, it is worthwhile to study Norse Mythology. That is what pissed me off when Marvel half-assed Thor: Ragnarok. The fight between Loki's children and the Fire Giants on Asgard and throughout the Nine Realms is supposed to be epic and insane, like a Lord of the Rings-style battle. But you idiots continue to reward laziness and stupidity instead of demanding better, since you have to pay them for entertainment. That "idiots" line was directed at the idiots who supported Taikai's desecration of Storytelling.

Only to loose his hammer to a female copy of himself who has been oddly missing throughout the story and OH-YEH DONE NOTHING TO EARN OR DESERVE THE HAMMER!!!! Will someone explain why Thor is still relevant now? He's gone from a singular character standing out from the others as a definitive hero, with a weapon enchanted and unique to him, that is now available to Vision, Captain American and now a gender switched copy of Thor, so even Thor is irrelevant and can be switched out, why should we care? There is no story, there is no character Hollywood deemed him interchangeable, so he obviously isn't relevant! Why should I care what happens next to someone I haven't spent years watching? ITS NOT THE SAME CHARACTER, IT HASN'T DONE ANYTHING NOR IS IT WORTHY OF ANY RECOGNITION! They're just highjacked a role and parachuted in a replacement...

It's not sad, it's inevitable. These are the death flails of a genre running its course. Westerns, musicals, film noir, it comes to all of them. You can always smell it when the deconstructionist stuff hits the fan. For Westerns, it was movies like 'High Plains Drifter' and 'The Wild Bunch. Musicals had 'Cabaret' and 'All That Jazz.' So how does fare like 'The Batman' and 'The Boys' look in that light? The cape genre's best days are in the rear view mirror. They had a decent lifespan (twelve years since 'Iron Man,' longer than that if you count the earlier standalones this century like 'Spider-Man' and 'X-Men') but eventually, audiences get burned out on this shit, especially when it's the same damned movie over and over again. "Hey, kids, who wants to see Thor go on a journey of spiritual growth to find himself _again?"_ "😐...What else is on?"

Yeah, i'm from germany and norse mythology is pretty close to our heart. Dor me it never was a problem if there were new interpretations. if a story is a couple of thousand years old and already told countless times, it's pretty much unavoidable that it will be changed up sooner or later. but what annoys me with those new Hollywood interpretations are the double standards and the sheer hypocrisy. They want to be sooo modern and edgy, but treat myths of black, asian and muslim cultures like a holy thing. There is ridiculous stuff in any culture. If Hollywood thinks a goat driven chariot is funny, that's okay. That doesn't bother me and it actually can be used in a really funny way for entertainment. Some muslim guy riding a unicorn would also be absolutely hilarious - but those brave Hollywood writers will never touch that. ;) Greetings from Germany
