People like feeling important, and if Hillary Clinton says they don't need more border patrol and isn't promising to increase their funding then they're going to choose Trump. This is the first time ever it has "mattered", really just Trump convincing people it matters. This is the first time a nominee has promised to send billions their way. Since we've bettered our relationship with Mexico the immigration numbers have gone down significantly now that they have economic promise at home. The Alt-Right also loves to not consider our loss of population from US Citizens leaving. In reality majority of our illegal immigrants come over on airplanes with a limited visa and then just stay. No wall or guy standing next to it will stop that. As far as drug smuggling goes, the US has done nothing but encourage it with our approach to drugs. And again, guys standing on the border aren't going to stop planes, packages, etc. We don't need border reform, we need drug reform, police reform, judicial reform, and immigration reform (in terms of making it easier and more accepting).
