You just made my decision easy. I wanted an amp to leave at my drummers house and I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and Blues Jr at home. This will absolutely be great for my amp at band practice or even in my studio as its so light to carry back and forth. Thank you for showing us the killer tones it can get with the upgraded speaker and you played amazing.

@@BuddaGuedes Update : the Monoprice 15 just got here a bit ago. I let it warm up a bit It and played a few Strats thru it, and then a LP. It sounds really really good to me and the speaker is obviously still quite new. I added an overdrive pedal to it just to see what it would sound like , and it sounded ridicuosly good! It seems to sound better at 15W with the volume low and then does on the 1 watt setting. Again , thanks for the great comparison video and saving me and I'm sure plenty of others a pocketful of money!!

Your observations are very interesting. The Tube 15, while having a tone stack and power amp copied from the Fender Bassman, has a later Marshall style "cold clipper" in the preamp and therefore it should break up with a Marshall type sound. Let's also remember that the very early Marshall amps were a copy (near exact) of the Fender Bassman but with British tubes and transformers. There's a lot of good stuff in that Tube 15. The schematics that I looked at were for the Laney LC15, but many believe that it, the Tube 15 and the Monoprice are the same, I'm not sure but your test seems to support the cold clipper. Amazing what you can get for such an excellent price.

The early HB GA-5 combos were actually rebranded Epiphone Junior amps with an added tone control. My colleague had an Epi and I bought the HB. Both from the same year. When we AB-ed them the HB won… when we looked inside they used slightly different components between both. The HB had better quality pieces onboard, and a better stock speaker but very crappy fuse holders (had to replace them). But in the end the HB won for 2/3rds of the Epi’s price… Played and gigged it often, sound technicians loved it, great tone but never too loud (ideal in smaller venues).

Great video Buddha, and superb playing. I ordered an HB tube15 last week and can't wait for it to arrive. Might take another week. Since i'm a beginner player this will be my first tube amp. I can afford the blues jr or more expensive amps but i think the HB 15 will be already good enough for now. Im selling off my katana 50mk2, it's not a bad amp but having a bazillion options makes it worse not better. I dont want to play and mess around with a laptop at the same time. A tube amp with a few knobs and pedals will be enough.

One thing that always irks me in tube amp demos is that many people simply don't crank them up loud enough to actually be in their sweet spot. I know I can always count on you to play them at decent volume Budda, it's one of the many reasons I love watching your videos. I've seen people getting mediocre sounds out of the Monoprice amp but their settings were gain dimed, volume set on like barely one. Of course it's not going to sound great, you've barely got any volume and air being moved and no power tube action happening. For what it's worth, I preferred the Tube 15's tone as well. I really like that slightly brighter tone and quicker break up.

In my opinion the stock Celestion Seventy 80 speaker in the Tube 15 is not great for high gain anyway. It's ok for clean or light crunch tones but it's spiky on the high end which IMO makes high gain tones shrill and fizzy. I plan to replace the speaker in mine with something like a Greenback which has a nicely rolled off treble and makes gain tones more growly and less fizzy.

Great video!! The Tube15 has the same layout as the previous version of Laney Cub12R which should have the same preamp-circuit as a Marshall JCM 800. So a bit more Marshall-sounding than the Blues Jr I think :-) And the small transformers in the Tube15 contributes to the nice, low headroom.

I am not trying to replace my other amps. I just wanted something lighter with less headroom so it breaks up easier. My main amp is a Hot Rod Deluxe, and it has all the headroom in the world. much too loud for home. But this amp will definitely do it for me. I am happy I remembered the H.B./Monoprice, because I was about to break down and buy a blues Junior. After watching this video, I'm very happy with my decision. I really do think I prefer the Monoprice. I think I'm going to take your advice and replace the speaker eventually. Thanks for all the great content!

Hell...if you don't think the Stage Right 15 can't bump as hard (or harder) than the BJ....and you're changing the speaker anyway - do what I did. Swapped out my Seventy 80 (98 decibel efficiency) for a Wizard (102.8 decibel efficiency) speaker I had kicking around. The big magnet did fit. I personally know how loud those BJ's are even in a live setting...and for some reason over and above a decibal headroom - they always punch above their class. I think it's a higher Fender-like voltage B+ transformer and the increased transient peaks that sets explains it. But having scant chance to even approach diming it, I do think my SR would hold it's own or better (thanks to it's more adjustable tone stack). Over and above that, having an fx loop helps for cleaner sounding delay time based effects in a live setting. Wish I was still in the crowd of my younger days and I'd go out and dime it live.

Can't help it, but to my ears (being the ears of a Blues Junior owner...) the Harley Benton Tube 15 surprisingly sounds actually better than the Blues Junior. More direct and fuller. This is, of course, via the recording, the computer and the iMac's speakers. Might be different in the room with the amps at higher volume, though. And yeah, replacing the speaker (to an Eminence Swamp Thang) has been a distinctive improvement for my Blues Junior (III) as well. Apart from that: nice video - very considerate!

subtle differences in the pre amp and also Fender has a much better reverb and that in its self changes the tonal output. I am sure the price difference partially goes on better components in the Blues Junior. Having owned a Blues Junior I can honestly say that they are a great amp in the mix but awful on their own. Blubbery and brittle at the same time. I ended up building my own 5e3 circuit amp with top components and custom wound transformers to get the small amp tone I wanted. The Jensen MOD 8-20 is a really good upgrade for amps with 8" speakers. Not expensive either. It'll easily take you to the limitations of that teeny cabinet. A 'better' option is a 1x12" cabinet with your choice of speaker. Champ-a-likes through a 12" or multiples thereof are rock'n'roll heaven to me. Spend a little on the stock speaker upgrade and buy a cab. That'll also open up to buying more heads to run through it. Win-win. The combo is still a great grab'n'go, but to let it rip through a larger cab as a head unit opens things up a lot. I run my Champ-a-likes and low power amps ( yeah, plural. Home built and commercial. I'm a 5 Watt or less addict ) through two 1x10" cabs with Jensens. Happy as a poop-rolling piggy.

It is weird that HB/Monoprice sounds 'bigger' recorded. It sounds like it gets a bit more 'tweedy' breakup at that volume. It is hard to know how a small amp sounds in the room. Champs sound huge recorded but small in the room. Maybe the Blues Jr. needs to be played louder than the Monoprice to compare them in their sweet spot. It would seem like the Blues Jr circuit and bigger cabinet 'should' make it sound the bigger of the two in the room.

I'm going in the opposite direction and putting in an older nice broken in 10" since I'm mainly using mine for home use, and the 2 twelves always give me too much head room
@BuddaGuedes3 жыл бұрын
A greenback would also be a great option for lower headroom

I dropped in a WGS 12" Reaper, matched pair of Tung-Sol EL84 & 3 Tung-Sol gold pin 12AX7 tubes and finally a Belton 3 spring, medium decay Reverb Tank. Sounds amazing. These Amps are cheap enough to mod.

That makes it a little too expensive for me. Just changing the speaker was enough for me

Paul from Stomp Box Steals ... I have another pedal recommendation. You may know this pedal as it has been made for 11 years. The Cusack Screamer OD. It sounds like the new MAXON Apex 808 ...my buddies who have original 808's have retired them for the Maxon.The only difference from an original is clarity. But the Cusack has a switch & the ts is on the left. On the right is a very high headroom clean boost. In the middle is the killer sound. On a Strat you get a SRV going thru a Fender black face sound! It is to die for good!!!! Fat, enough sustain, just the right amount of dirt and the Strat still has that chime on every note and chord.

Thanks for the tip. Did not know it

An usually good low to medium gain OD the Dolamo D8 Overdrive. It has a fairly flat mids like a KOT. It has a course & gritty yet a warm sound. Hard to find ...but you can get it on AliExpress for about $25.00 USD which includes shipping.Yes...that cheap and it is reasonably well made. Rumours are it is take on this and that. My guy in China says it was based on an Xotic RC Booster schematic. It does sound similar but the Dolamo is fuller and warmer. That could happen just because of the brand of the parts not their rated values or a change in design.

The Tube 15 is a modified copy of a Laney Cub, rather than a Fender blues jr. Though, I think it the Laney was ‘inspired’ by a blues jr anyway so your comparison is still a good one. I really enjoy mine, though after this I’m tempted by a speaker upgrade. Thanks for the video.

Wish this was a jr in a factory box to get a better comparison …the new box for your jr looks to have more openings than original box allowing for more than likely totally different speaker reaction …other wise very good vid , just I don’t know if it’s a fair comparison .?.? It could be or it could not be if Im right about the possible more openness of your jr’s box…
@vicpnut12 жыл бұрын
Actually I should say “different box openings “ as I don’t know if the backs opened or closed on your jr.
@BuddaGuedes2 жыл бұрын
The opening in the front is fake. It sounds basically the same as a regular jr
@HumbleHeartMinistry9 ай бұрын
On your slide demo what did you turn on? Because it made both amps sound horrible. Your playing however is outstanding! Just leave the distortion or whatever you clicked on off. I think both amps are pretty equal in sound, but the blues jr is twice the price so…… if you are a picky musician you will know the slight difference, but if your someone listening to you play, you will not hear any difference!

Suprising how much more clarity the benton has without losing the nice thick glassy tone that the blues junior is known for. Makes the blues junior sound like its covered in a blanket, which is strange because it is often that the blues junior makes other amplifiers sound like they are covered in a blanket. Hopefully the benton isn't overly bright, however ive heard the benton is a steal for the price and this video clearly shows why. Im sure you've helped many people with this video. Thanks for that Buddha.

@@BuddaGuedes I had 2 Tweed version Blues Juniors they had 1x12" Jensen Ceramic 35 Watt speaker in them. Which was different than the Black Tolex model. I bought in them 2011. They were $349.00 back then. The Harley Benton seems less expensive if you don't add the $70.00 shipping charge. Depending on where you live they may have to go through customs and they can be held for weeks before they're released to the shipping company who will bring it to you.

I know alot of folks dont like the 70/80 and i was going to a different speaker in it but after 15 to 20 hrs of playing on the 70/80 i liked the tones im getting from it.
