Jay Byrne shows you some valuable tips and tricks regarding the FENDER DELUXE REVERB TONE MASTER. Upon searching KZbin videos about the TONE MASTER Jay noticed that there are some very basic concepts on how to make the amp sound it's best that are just not represented in most of the videos he saw. So he figured if you want something done right you gotta do it yourself.

This channel is what KZbin used to be about. Low production reviews telling the truth and informing us with what we need. Thank you mate I subbed.

Also worth noting: the second input on each channel is -3db so if you’re looking for quiet that can allow you to use the second “attenuator” setting from bottom without worrying as much about the volume knob on your guitar.

I have this amp. I use it for both home and weekly gigs. Here's a tip - The amp starts to breakup around 5 on the volume, on any attenuation setting.

I noticed that as well. Crazy enough though it's still pretty darn loud on the lowest setting at 5. Lol.

I watched a couple of dozen ToneMaster videos and this is the best (I have a Deluxe Reverb Tone Master and three tube Deluxe Reverbs, and everything I heard in this video rings true to me),

Good information. Simple reality: Volume always makes "tone perception" better. Of course, if it's too loud then all bets are off. Playing smaller venues requires we make some sacrifices in our personal tone requirements. Another "reality" is that what we produce tone wise at home does not necessarily sound good in a live mix.

This has been one most helpful videos on this amp. When I got mine, I put some overdrive pedals in front of it and got terrible digital clipping, fizzyness, all kind of noise. It was terrible. Found out that reducing the output level of the pedals helped a ton, just like not using the attenuator at lower settings as you suggested. But it is not easy to find these information online, it is either 'great pedal platform' or 'crappy digital sounding piece of s**t' 😅 so thank you!

I was recently blessed with some substantial money to spend on a guitar (and amp!). I knew immediately that the guitar was going to be a Fender American Tele or Strat. I went with strat because I was making a Tele at the time. Then for an amp, I B-lined to this amp. Solid state is the way to go in an apartment setting. I live alone in a bachelor suite and this amp does it all.

Got this amp too - one nice feature in my opinion is that the channels are phase inverted to each other, like the original, so that you can patch the second input to the other channel. This gives you the option to have the reverb and/or vibrato only in the highs and not the bass if you turn bass down in the vibrato channel, and treble down in the normal one.

Nice video thanks. These amps are very gig-worthy and will last for years doing their one thing in life as computers with speakers that they are. I have two PCs from the '90s that I used daily and now sit out in my workshop covered in dust. I haven't used them for many years, but both actually work fine still. These amps will probably still be working long after you give playing away.

The reason that it sounds muddy on the lowest power setting is because your not driving the speaker at its optimal level. A 10 inch speaker would tighten up the lower volume fidelity! I’ve found that a modest tweak up on the treble helps.

This may be the best discussion of this amp’s character I’ve heard. I agree with what’s said…but I still wonder what the Celestian without the firmware update would be like.

The difference in low vs high volumes is because the speakers need to move air in order for the tone to be really good. They can’t do it at lower volumes, unless you have a 8” champ type speaker

I had no idea about the difference in the normal channel. I just got a TM Super Reverb, and I wonder if that is the case there too. Agree on volume, the speakers need to move freely with some power behind them to get the tone.

There is a difference in the normal channel on the super as well. The main difference is you don’t get reverb and trem with the normal channel. The cool thing about the super is it has a bright switch.

I have the Twin. Here's what I think. Drive pedals don't sound right, no matter what. At unity volume, they are going to work best. But, then they sound tinny & fizzy. Tone Master Amps are awesome. But they are meant to sound like the amp the uh are emulating, without the use of pedals. I run mine at home on the lowest setting & crank the volume to get some drive. Bliss.

I have to say that I have found the Princeton TM to sound the best with dirt. Now by dirt I mean Tube Screamer, Timmy and a Klon style pedal. I am using an HX Effects and I find that if I stack overdrives I can get good results. Straight up high gain pedals sound bad but then they sound bad on Tube black panel amps too.

Oh man I just ordered the blonde version. I live in an apartment and was hoping I’d be okay with the attenuator. I’ll try your tip of lowering the guitar volume as well. I also plan on using a pair of headphones at times. If it’s bad I can return it I guess. Thanks for the tips!
@efxloopjaybyrne
@efxloopjaybyrne 3 ай бұрын
You should be fine. You might have some issues with getting any drive even at the lowest attenuation. It can still get loud but for cleans and with pedals you have quite a few different tricks you can do to keep it reasonable. For drive you could run it into a DAW and just use your monitors. That way you could crank it but bring the volume down whisper quiet if you wanted.

Thank you for the review, and for taking the time to upload it. I'm curious to know how long you have had this amp, and how has it held up in that time? Still performing well since the video was made? Been watching a lot of tonemaster videos this week as I am greatly considering one. Your video/review was definitely one of the better ones that I've come across. Thank you again, I greatly appreciate it!

For what it's worth, I labored over buying one forever. I finally broke down and bought the blonde Tonemaster DR a couple of months ago. I love it. I think it sounds great. It makes me want to play my guitar every time I look at it. Granted I'm not a professional guitarist, but I've been playing for 35 years and I don't find it lacking. And, I don't have to sweat moving it.

I actually don’t have that one anymore. I have the Princeton version now. The others were too loud. However the general consensus is that most folks have had theirs for a few years with no issues. They seem to be pretty sturdy.

Would you recommend pairing it with a volume attenuator pedal like JHS little black amp box or boss tube amp expander?
@efxloopjaybyrne
@efxloopjaybyrne 13 күн бұрын
Definitely don’t need the tube expander. Actually I don’t think it would work for that. Now that I think about it there’s no effects loop so I don’t think the little black box would work either. With the attenuator on the back you can get the deluxe pretty low. You lose sound quality a bit but just to mess around and practice it would be fine. You could plug it into your daw and use studio monitors for a more silent practice. Hell you could use headphones with it that way.

You said that the amp wants volume. How much are we talking about? I'd be comfortable playing it between 75-85 db but not 90-100.
@efxloopjaybyrne
@efxloopjaybyrne 8 күн бұрын
If your playing clean you can play at low comfortable volumes. If you want edge of breakup or gain you can get it just above louder tv volume with the attenuator at its lowest position. But you sacrifice sound quality. The amp with gain of any kind doesn’t sound great unless it’s pushing some air. In those cases it can creep up around 90 or so db.

It’s incredibly loud at 0.2W. They should have done it as attenuation in DB. I really don’t think a 0,2W is that lound.
