Hi!
Here you can listen (& watch) to 15 Doors-Songs I played (jammed!) by a 1972 silver sparkle Fender Rhodes Piano Bass and a June 1967 VOX Continental Organ (Italy) which is amplified by 74 Fender Twin Reverp Amp. When you play these instruments thru a bigger amplification + speaker setup or cabinets (with deep/low frequencies transmitting) it blows everything away on- and off-stage - including neighbours ;-) Great Instrument & engineering back those days anyhow...
When i say Jam i mean Jam which means that i dont aim to cover each single note & chord "as it has to be" (and in fact when you listen to many of the live records / bootlegs even Ray did play mostly "differently". To make that clear. This is not a try to copy Ray (which you finally cant btw) There´s only one Master and he´s called RM!
I perform the songs more or less "my way" , my style, because when playing like i do here i mostly even dont need to think of it - it simply comes out of me - i "remember basicly some "structures/chords/notes" coming back to and thats it. i dont have all this single notes conserved in my brain!!! :-) So - improvising is the key on a keyboard! hahahaha
And when recording it now again it would be different - maybe even "better" than this because i got more experienced in doing so over the years tough... and sound would be improved because recording gear & experienced are improved as well... So i should think of recording another video now 10y later :-)
It´s a major honor for me having met Ray & Robbie in 2004 (D21C) opening the european tour.
Note: On my Piano Bass the lowest E Key was signed by Mr.Manzarek himself! :-)
Keep the spirit alive!
A "short" Medley:
00:59 Riders on the Storm
02:12 My Eyes have seen you
03:23 When the Music´s over
04:55 You´re lost little girl
05:57 Love me two times
07:40 People are Strange
08:42 the Soft Parade
10:59 Love Street
12:46 Moonlight Drive
13:58 Back Door Man
15:15 Alabama Song
16:39 Unknown Soldier
17:45 Train Jam
19:20 the End
21:32 Ship of Fools

Fortunately , with modern synthesizers, you can create these sound nowadays, but , it is a pleasure to hear the original instruments....The Doors had such a unique sound, that it was almost impossible to even categorize it. Between Manzarek's set up, and the Flamenco of Robby, along with Densmore's equally unique drum technique, it just all adds up to a patented sound that is like no other....that, and the incredible voice of Jim....a new generation is always "discovering" this groupl

A lot of people don’t see it this way but it’s these 2 organs and the lack of a bass guitar that’s what MADE the Doors sound.

In complete agreement with you, I can't say enough about the way a tube does justice for any music going through it. I have many electronic organs now and although I no longer have my Vox Jaguar and Farfisa FAST 4 it was those two organs that opened my ears to the transistor. Tube amps take a transistor organ and softens some of the shrilling overtones, but thickens the even ordered harmonics to fatten the bite and bottom end. A bargain for great sound reinforcement are the old Hammond tone cabs

Yeah su'!! ANALOG LIVES ONE HOT LITTLE ELECTRON AT A TIME! As a guitar player of 20 years before discovering the organ I swore up down and sideways that the almighty vacuum tube is the be all and end all of tone. I still think this in many ways, but when it comes to tone generation- be it a vibrating metal guitar string over a pick-up, or a Hammond tone wheel over a pick-up, or a Wurlitzer electrostatic reed, this is also an element in the chain. And the Transistor in a tone generator is MAJOR!

I eventually got a Gibson Kalamazoo. It had a little more versatility than the Vox; it could make the sort of piano-ish sound I used on "Back Door Man" (from The Doors (album)); plus, it had a little knob sticking up on the volume pedal which could bend the note a half-step down. We used it on "Not to Touch the Earth". Even synthesizers don't really do that."

The other Organ was a Gibson G-101. The first was Ray Manzarek of The Doors, who told Contemporary Keyboard magazine (September, 1977 issue) that he began using it (switching from the Vox Continental used on the first two albums) during the recording of the Waiting for the Sun album, in 1968: RM: "I used a Vox for about two-and-a-half albums. Then Vox was sold to somebody and the organs started falling apart. I'd go out on a gig and in half a set I'd break about six or seven keys.

my personal experience using both instruments live are: G101:it seems to have more density - sound fills more the "room" - more warmth depending which amp you use - you dont recognize that easy wrong pressed notes; VOX: you need to play fully different because the keys reaction is different (G101 has only 1 keycontact; the VOX has several more); more brilliance in sound, you hear every wrong pressed note; best sound for light my fire anyway; for recording purposes VOX is better

right, Fender Bassman100 or Fender Twin Reverb. The Sound is being "created" by the warmth of entire tube´s (try a little by changing Volume of Input-Gain from build in pre-amplification) and not forget to say that you need a classic spring reverb... (these amps are automatically equipt with spring reverb)

VogtThomas, Thats interesting, I assumed that maybee Ray was going for a different sound on Waiting For The sun. Funny though, dont we hear the vox on ship of fools from Morrison Hotel and LA Merica on LA Woman ? Its intersting to hear you play Riders on The Storm with the vox, that made me smile, also People are strange with the vox I thought was cool that you did. Yeah the Gibson was the one he used in Concert, I seem to remmeber him saying that now.

there´s no secret - you have to get INTO the music - INTO the MOMENT of the SITUATION - INTO the SOUND of the current wave which enters your ears - then you have to ADD your personal FEELINGS to that and you can create & improvisate in realtime - thats what Ray was doing - just listen to live/bootleg recordings. furthermore the whole band does this and so the music awoke ;-)
