This is the PTU disassembled for you. I describe how it operates. Most importantly how it fails and how to fix it.
I have a rebuild kit for that includes all seals and the 4 snap ring conversions to spiral lock and new bonze fittings that do not move and fix the factory design flaw.

No problem. Every one I've fixed has the same issue. I have replacement brass caps and I've switched to a spiral locking ring that evenly distributes pressure on the brass

This is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing! How did you get all this know how and experience?! There are hundereds of mistakes that can be made, and that thing is not running properly anymore! This is magical, how did you educate youreself?

I’m rarely impressed but this “dude” and the complexity of this PTU is just damn impressive and I’ve wrenched a few engines. Wouldn’t it make sense given the number of cars to just offer rebuilt r&r PTUS, for say $15k and sell them since every ff and gtc4 needs this upgrade sooner rather than later?

I just don't have any core ptu to have ready to rebuild. Ppl want to sell broken ones for way to much to make it worth while. I have the rebuild kit for $2250 at the moment, and it's not that hard to do the job so let your local ferrari specialist do it. I'm also focusing on the next rebuild kit.

Great stuff. Thanks ! I’m shopping for a 2014 or newer FF. PTU and lift is my only concern. I’m factoring the repair when I make an offer. Anything else I should be looking into?

DCT rebuild will be needed. Water pump leaking from weep hole. Will be about $8k to replace. Can see it leaking onto the batter to starter/alternator wire if you take front pan off. Valve cover gaskets will be leaking soon and you have to replace the timing solenoids at the same time due to them being bolted under the valve cover. Timing chain tensioner gasket behind the alternator will also be leaking. Replace the gasket when you rebuild the PTU and change the accessory belt at the same time. Great car. But 10 years old will need about $40k total maintenance but then should give you no major issues for 8 years

I hope Ferrari pays attention. But youtube is probably beneath them. Very informative. Question. What happens when you just take that PTU disaster out of the car..? Just convert it to two wheel drive..?

You would have to take the engine out fabricate a damper for the front and have the rotating assembly balanced so the engine doesn't shake itself apart. Then you'll need to code out the 4wd system from the TCU, ECM, STEERING WHEEL ELECTRONICS, DASH, BODY CONTROL MODULE, ETC. Also the gearbox ratio is set up for 4wd assistance so I don't know what the low gear load would do long term if you no longer have 4wd.

@@dmitka8324 yes it's different. Even the pinion has a lock in the F12 that isn't in the ff. Ratio is different, operating pressure. Some have different pressure sensor for the diff.

As a former GTC 4 Lusso owner, STAY AWAY from these two models. Yes, they are beautiful cars and fun to drive. But they are nightmares to own. PTU problem big, but not the only problem. Sour lemon of a car I am afraid…

Yeah they all do it. Even the GTC 4 LUSSO. Can't wait to see if the new suv has the same design internally. I bet they do. Thankfully, my kit completely resolves the issues

Any decent ferrari shop can remove it and send the ptu to us for rebuild. If you want it all done in one location, The Little Speed Shop in Rochester, NY is a great shop. I do sell a rebuild kit and I have a step by step tutorial on my channel so a good ferrari shop near you has no excuse to not be able although they may not want to do it as it's something Ferrari does not have instructions for

Does it wear less if you don't drive it in AWD?

If it's in neutral with no shifting then yes, but I don't know if it programs shifts when not engaged. Just use my rebuild kit and it will not break again

Can you just remove the PTU and front drive shafts ? or will the car be in limp mode?

Can't remove the ptu without developing something to put in its place on the front of the engine. That could be far more expensive than just fixing it. You would have to just have a programmer delete the PTU electronics and change all the other modules that look for signal from it. It would be about $3500 for the programming. The car would be a little slow in the first two gears as the rear DCT transmission has a different gearing than the other gearboxes as it expects help from the front PTU.

@@JacobKatz he may have just electronically turned it off. If he removed it, I'd be curious to see how long the engine lasts without that front load.
