F40; it stands for Ferrari 40 years. That was on the 12th of March 1987, almost 35 years ago. Founder of the iconic brand Enzo Ferrari came up in 1986 with the idea of creating a special version to celebrate 40 years of Ferrari as a sports car manufacturer. It was the first time that the Italian sports car manufacturer came up with a special birthday edition of its cars. It would be, as we know now, also be the last time. Even if the Italians presented the La Aperta in 2016 to commemorate the 70th birthday. The La Aperta was the open version of the La Ferrari presented back in 2013. Whereas the F40 had its development, design and name all refer to the jubilee, the La Aperta only was a derivative of an existing model with a 70 number on its side. Now, Ferrari celebrates its 75th birthday. The F40 can blow out 35 candles. It is more popular than ever. The prices for used examples were at some 275,000 Euros some twenty years ago but now, depending on the history and condition, they reach the tenfold of that. Whereas the auction price was at 1,5 million Euros last year, now that price is at least a million higher. The F40 is one of the Ferrari models with a rich history. It formed the starting point for a number of driving business cards of the brand, and it was the last car created under the supervision of Enzo Ferrari himself. It is also the first car with a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. It also is one of the most extreme Ferrari ever. Simply put, the F40 is iconic.
Because Ferrari celebrates its 75th birthday, we will present a number of recent supercars made by the brand in the coming weeks. Autovisie journalist Sjoerd van Bilsen presents the F40 as the first one out of a series.
