Great work man and congrats for the second place by the way! I also participated in the challenge and your videos actually helped me a ton in some aspects of my own project and future projects to come. After the challenge I wasn't really happy with my end result so I decided to take a little bit more time in the scene to make it a little bit more appealing and be worth of going into my folio, something I heard you say before, that it probably is worth to spend that extra 20% on that project than just move into the next one and leave that one as it is! You inspre me a lot to keep creating awesome art and constantly push my skills forward, and I have been actively working on portfolio pieces whenever I have free time to do so! I have been following you for a while now and I am eagerly waiting for more content, keep it up! :D

Those videos are so inspiring.... I got a scene I want to do, and I've been putting it on the backburner for more than a year now. You know, always finding excuses to do something else but this. It's just the thought of doing all the assets, UVs and textures is freezing me in place because I know for a fact, nothing's gonna work as tutorials are teaching. I've tried it several times before and always, always failed. My scenes turn out mediocre at best. At some point, I actually started being very frustrated by UE4 in general and just not enjoying doing any of that anymore... But following your channel and this very well put together scene, it feels like you can rekindle my love for UE4 and finally give me that initial push I desperately need. Keep doing what you are doing, Tim. It means a lot to us!

I think your scene is very good. Other than the foliage, the other main thing that sticks out is that it's a very dry environment for saying your in a forest. It would have really helped the scene if there was some water here and there on the ground and tiles etc. I think Some simple wet leaky decals would have helped too.

I think the biggest advice of the whole series (for me personally) was when you said that a lot of students appear on you radar , I have missed a lot of contest because I'm still learning, but I didn't though that even if I don't win people are going to start noticing me , great advice!
@stickfigure42

One thing I always wonder when watching things like this series is how much time went into different parts. Even though I know generally that they all take a long time, I still find myself getting discouraged too quickly, so having an idea of how long it takes experienced artists to finish things helps me keep at it. So knowing the times are useful for helping me get my personal mental *minimums* adjusted to more reasonable places. Thanks a lot for making for this series, your emphasis on giving general principles for how to approach things has given me a lot of great ideas as I'm getting back into doing art.
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
When you are learning, dont worry about trying to beat the clock, focus 100% on getting things to look awesome. Trying to get fast/things done within a time limit almost always leads to student work looking rushed and unfinished. Speed comes with time, years and thousands of hours of putting in the work and learning from each completed project. This whole scene took about 3 months of 4-10 hours a night, 3-4 days a week, plus a night any time i was filming and editing a video. When you are developing your skills, the only thing you should be looking at from more experienced artists is the visual quality gap and how to close that, speed will come. I would never imagine getting up to some highpoly modeling god level of speed like tor frick in anything under 2-3 years of consistently doing highpoly work, even with my 12 years industry working etc. It just hasnt been my focus and would take a long time to develop the skills to get that fast. I could however put in as much time as i needed to get similar end results with a lot of blood sweat and tears/revisions etc. The journey is long, so try and focus on visual results and enjoying the process of making art, learning from mistakes etc. Do that and one day you will look up and realize you are 10x faster than you used to be :) hope this helps with a mental reframe/motivation!
@stickfigure42
@stickfigure42 4 жыл бұрын
@@PolygonAcademy It's not even about going for speed yet! It's more that my natural inclination is to get a little bit discouraged after a few hours working on a model and it not looking good yet. Having reminders that each part takes professionals longer than that too is helpful for knowing that I just need more patience while I'm practicing.
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
@@stickfigure42 yea the patience part of it is huge. Most stuff doesnt start to look good until atleast 20-30 hours in for assets or scenes. everything looks bad at first when you are blocking it out or getting the rough model in place. you just have to push yourself to keep going till the end. I wrote an article about motivation that might be helpful: www.polygon-academy.com/tips-for-artists-struggling-with-motivation/

Hell yeah, awesome postmortem man! I can't agree more with the importance of marketing yourself out there as an artist even from nothing. Being popular and gaining followers and likes isn't the point unlike a lot of students think so. It's about having that one person that could see your profile and help you get that first foot into the industry! And being on the trending page definitely helps with having a lot of followers. In my case, a freelancer character artist thought I was pretty promising for a student. They shared my artstation to another senior character artist from my city and he also thought my stuff was cool. He ended up, messaging me on LinkedIn so he could refer me for his studio and on top of that, he referred me to 7 other studios! Here I am after accepting one of the offers because of an absolute stranger that saw my artstation. And I'm not even a character artist! That shows how impactful someone from the industry could be. As you said, you never know who's watching! :)

Your post mortem again reminds me that I need to learn to pull back on that almost meaningless detail (from the perspective of game art) especially on smaller deadlines.

Great video again, Tim! Really liked the fact that even though you got 2nd place, it didn't hold you back from giving a critic to your own work and stating some things you could have done better. Not many people can step back and find negativity after having their work acknowledged! It humbles others like me even more. :) I know you've talked about new workflows before. But since the end of the challenge, have you considered trying Speedtree for better result and quality? I'm learning it myself and it saves a lot of time! I started working on a scene and created the materials I need for texturing and I've got the block out pretty much done. I'm gonna start and begin the production of assets next week. But I'm having trouble with some of them in terms of modeling and texturing. Also since I suck at lighting and the fact it's important for the mood, I'd love to get some insight when it's time. Could I send you a message or two on artstation to discuss it even more? Thanks for understanding and thanks again for your videos!

Hi! First of all, I had so much luck finding this channel. U are helping me a lot with my game art degree. I passed from a low score to a decent one. Thanks a lot. On the university, they told us to use Artstation very carefully, we should post our best work. However, this fight with what u are saying on this video: to interact with the community, participate on challenges, etc. I'm in the first year, although I'm very proud of my work, I don't know if it is enough to publish on Artstation. Can this affect negatively to my opportunity of find a job? U are completely right saying that we should build an Artstation community from the beginning of the course, but it's at the beginning when we are learning and the work is not well done. Hopefully u can help me with this. Thanks! :D

Pame Dominguez Faryna your artstation should always reflect your current ability, so when you are starting out there is no hiding the fact you are learning/suck, i know i did haha! But as time passes you can simply remove old work as you get better, i audit my portfolio and remove old work every couple years! I would say starting to gain a following via challenges and learning how the platform works is more important in the beginning, just clean up the old work when you start applying for jobs :) hope that helps

I am a junior 3D artist in Barcelona, Spain and I would like to know how would it be possible to connect with peers and like minded artists to exchange knowledge and perspectives on each others work?

have you ever thought about being a mentor ? Don't mean to vent here lol but I've watched all your videos and I finally can say that I actually found someone who I look up too and got inspired to just make art. Whether It's good , bad , or doesn't end up in my portfolio; I know that I am still learning from those projects while realizing mistakes that I have made by giving up on projects in the past because I felt they like weren't good enough to be in my portfolio. Thank you for making those videos!

Yea I have been asked constantly about mentorship haha. I might open up something in future such as in depth portfolio review services or 1on1 hourly mentoring packages or something like that, but right now I don't really have the time to put 100% effort into it so I would rather hold off until I have the time to really deliver for people.

Thanks Tim for awesome videos. I wonder what is the best way for lighting the grass, trees, plants and etc? Do you use static lightmap or are they totally dynamic? I tried static but it increases building times and it's looking weird. Do you know some best practices for that? Thank you.
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
Sargis Ter-Grigoryan if you do static make sure each mesh in your foliage paint is set to like a 4-8 lightmap, maybe 16 for the trees. Huge lightmap sizes like 256 or 512 will drastically increase your bake times and are not realistic for use in games really. I think my grass is set to dynamic but i disabled cast shadows on those meshes for performance.

How would you go about making large sets of stairs with tiling textures? But also making them all look unique by rounding off edges and sculpting detail and cracks into random stairs then baking. Maybe making some of them larger than others. I can make stairs with tiling textures but how do I then bake the sculpt into it too? I haven't tried it but I feel like it would ruin the tiling
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
chances are you would be fine with just the tiling texture stairs in 99% of games. You could do a unique sculpt for the stairs and edges and then also overlay tiling diffuse, roughness and normals for the smaller details like concrete or cracks etc with a tiling detial map. I would look at lincoln hughes prop shader, it has options for that :)

Awesome videos, would you consider doing some more in depth tutorials on Unreal engine for environment art mainly what tools, setups and settings you use as I would love to know your workflow. As someone who has only used unity Unreal can seem a bit alien but I would love to improve my knowledge of it for environment art.

@@PolygonAcademy oh great awesome. On a side note do you think unity with its new HDRP will be good for portfolio ready environment art? Or do you find unreal the best engine to work with. Only ask as almost all Arstation pieces use unreal.
@PolygonAcademy
@PolygonAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
TheMADmk they are both super powerful engines, i have seen plenty of aaa quality scenes in unity over the last few years, one of the feudal japan winners was done in unity. I just preffer unreal because its what i use at work and its a bit more common in game studios. But both will give you good results if you learn the ins and outs of each engine.

They discouraged it, like 1 or 2 small things would probably be ok, but the whole point is to level up your art creation skills. Most people create most of their work form scratch. But for regular portfolio work its totally fine, lots of studios use them already

Hey Tim, question, how long did it take you in terms of hours? OR how long do you think it would take if you did it again? like what is your self time line? did you work on it a few hours everyday, skip days?
@PolygonAcademy

I probably worked on it 4-8 hours a night, 4-5 days a week for the two months of the challenge. Doing the videos definitely added extra time to the overall production. Id estimate about 150-200 hours probably overall.

Say you're not working on an artstation challenge but a normal project and want to continue including wips to show development, would you continually update your project in artstation then so you can see the whole development or some other way? Sometimes I see folks just do a nice breakdown of main components but no wip development when they finally post a project
@PolygonAcademy

the blogs section of artstation is perfect for that. or a thread on polycount. but highly detailed blog posts on artstation are a great way to get visibility as the ratio of blog posts to portfolio posts daily is still super low. ive had blogs in the main feed for a week vs 1 day on the trending page for an portfolio post. super under priced attention at the moment.
