We put two amazing blades up against each other to see how they perform! Will one outshine the other??? Find out!

There is a reason why virtuovice loves the Aurora for a reason.

It’s nice to see bushcraft knifes being used how they are intended to be used, and not stabbing them through car doors to test edge retention.

I would have thought the LT would be a better carver and feather stick maker. With performance being that close, the personal preference of handle style should probably be the tie breaker. Also, next test on the Magnacut cut. That Aurora tip is pretty fine. Add in a steel at 62hrc and I thought you’d get some chips. Nice work

I was very surprised in the slicing performance of the aurora at .160 compared to the .125 of the lt. I also completely agree with being so close in performance that the handle may be the tie breaker for people. Both handles are fantastic imo though!

May I suggest to you to "compare" two knifes I guess could interest many, however unlikly.. lol : (Both 'stainless' I believe) Joker Knives : Nomade (Convex) "vs" (or as both) Cold Steel Bush Ranger (S35VN) Would be awesome :-)

They are both beautiful knives. My takeaway from this is I need to make my own knives. I don't see how a fixed blade cost so much.

The price of steel and being all hand finished. It is pricey, but both bark river and LT are great values compared to many!

@@easternadventures4254 here’s my thinking. Joker makes amazing knives not the same steel. But really steel is more gimmick then actually difference. Checkout what they offer for $100 . Then tell me you actually have a $150 difference. I know 3v is supposed to be great but truthfully other then it being hard to sharpen out chips I don’t see any difference in it from my other knives with the same type of design. I actually prefer my 80cv knife the most . I also have a A8 Chinese take of the dog soldier knife that is amazing it cost $80 with a kydex sheath. Don’t get me wrong as far as I love the looks and the knives are very good. I just don’t understand such a high price. Especially since my background is in metal working.

@@richardhenry1969 there has never been a better time in history for the knife making industry! There are so many great options. By no means am I telling anyone they have to buy these. They are just my preference. Here is my logic. My collection is mostly bark river and Lt Wright. Both are family owned American made. Both companies have Social media groups for interacting with each other and with the actual blade smiths and others involved. Mike Stewart of bark river is online on the page every single day answering questions and cracking jokes. They offer no questions asked warranties. I can get online ask a questions about their lines and have an answer on minutes. I’ve actually became friends with some of the people at the blade shops. Not to mention the amazing community and people I’ve met online because of these brands. Between the two companies they employ many people who work hard to make the best blades possible. All these things considered, not even taking into consideration your statement about blade steel, and yes my answer is they are worth it. I can also pick both up a lot cheaper in new condition a lot of times on the secondary market

@@easternadventures4254 great reasons, maybe I'm just getting old and short sighted. I think I see things a little different because when I was training to be a mechanic we did welding and metal work. Fact everyone made knives. You couldn't give them away back then everyone wanted a known name. Thanks for telling me I never thought about it like that have a good one.

@@easternadventures4254 The initial price of the steel is a difference but it's not the main difference. When you use steels with much greater wear resistance that means that they wear out the belts used to grind the blades. With basic steels like 1095 the steel is pretty uniformly as hard as it's heat treated, commonly about 58 RC because 1095 becomes very brittle above that. Magnacut has a high proportion of Vanadium carbides which are 78 RC and almost as hard as the aluminium oxide used in most belts. I heard a knifemaker say that with 1095 you can budget on a number of knives per belt, with CPM 20Cv you can budget on a number of belts per knife. Remember that it takes longer to grind away that supersteel too so it's also an increased labour cost. With all that increased cost, that extra edge retention has to be worth it to you. The more knives I have and the more I learn about steels, the more I realise that it's the design that matters the most but I still can't help being a steel snob now that I know the difference and so I want both a great design and a great steel. Strangely enough I prefer knives that aren't perfectly finished though. Bark River has slightly variable finish as they are semi production knives. LT Wright seems to have a reputation for better finish with perfectly even grinds etc and I almost regard that as a disadvantage for me as I don't want to tarnish something so perfect. I like to use my knives.

Hey man, thank for the comparison. Just a comment. Trying them on green wood is not a challange, they work very good on that, same i think. I've tried a casstrom and my aurora on old aged wood and there, is the space for a real challange between them. I have to say that, in my little experience, the profile of the casstrom like the one of the lt right is not the best in every test. the Aurora is way more good in every comparison i've done with. But anyway it's my opinion. PS: this Magnacut is a damn good steel

Thank you for the comment. The green wood is for the carving/notching portion. Just like carving a spoon, you do not use aged wood, you use green. I’m looking for cleanness of the cuts in the notches and how easy it push cuts into the notches. I’m sorry that you think you cannot gauge two blades on green wood. The seasoned hard wood was used in the baton/feather stick portion of the comparison. This is a real world comparison.

@@easternadventures4254 ok understand :) for pickets and carving usually i use aged wood. Not for making spoons etc My opinion is that in green wood all the knife works pretty good (ok not the same but). On aged wood you can view more difference in carving and in cutting efficiency. Anyway i appreciate the "normal day" approach because at the end the real world use is the every day task!!!

Remember, a lot of any comparison is feedback from the blade to the user. From the green wood I was able to test the tips, how well they carve in tight notching, and how clean they carve. Dried wood chips out due to the lack of moisture. Green wood produces much cleaner cuts. That is why is is generally used for carving. This is what I was looking at during the test. Also, I’m watching for hot spots and feeling out the handles in different grips. I’m not sure what more I would have gotten out of dried wood.

@@easternadventures4254 we usually use dry wood that we find in the forest. rarely we (in italy) cut green wood but yeah, at the end is more about personal feelings i think. and maybe about conventions in the place we live in. thanks for the nice discussion.

So you like to over exert yourself and do things with brute force burning unnecessary calories rather than using skill ie. grab a baton and smack the blade into your try-stick instead of siting there pushing with all ya got and rocking it just trying to make it bite lol-ol-ol

I think he is just doing it for test purposes. This was just a test of two blades not an instruction on notching.
