Police revoke shoot captain's licence

Paul Cox is a respected member of his community, a deerstalker and captain of the local shoot. Devon & Cornwall Constabulary are treating him like a criminal, sending armed officers to his house in darkness to grab back his guns, revoke his certificate and not give him a reason why. The reason, however, is clear. The Home Office is about to blame Devon & Cornwall for failures that led to the mass shooting in Plymouth in August.
The police action against lawful shooters - and Paul Cox is not the only one - is a petty attempt by Devon & Cornwall to make it appear they are a functioning licensing authority. To shooters, it doesn’t look like that. It's our job to make the rest of the country see it that way, too.

This happened to a chap in a pheasant sindicate I was involved with. His son went to the police station and retrieved the guns on his own certificate. Eventually it was overturned and the guns were returned to their owner. Good luck, don't let them grind you down.

I had a similar experience, armed officers at my house asking me to surrender my weapons whilst they investigated a claim from an ex girlfriend. It was concluded that i was entirely innocent, but had to incur £4K in legal bills and the loss of my guns for 9 months. No action was taken against the ex. and the irony was that I got a letter saying that the investigation had concluded that the claims were totally without foundation but if there was a repeat of this ( ie doing nothing at all wrong) my guns would be removed permanently !! The Police have next to no accountability and I feel very sorry indeed for Paul.

I was more annoyed at the Police for taking such drastic action with no evidence at all on her side versus some simple break up correspondence on my side that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was lying. I have no doubt I would have been very close to this point myself had my ex wife had a shred of credibility. She levelled some pretty substantial false allegations at me. I did get a caution about 18 years ago and have stated that on every renewal which has never been a problem ! The police are unfortunately between a rock and hard place and have to react on any complaints about anybody, irrespective of gender if that person owns a firearms or shotgun certificate and have been involved in a fracard of any type. A dispute with your neighbour could even bring in the heavy gang, even if that report is totally fictitious. A good reason for all of us to remain squeaky clean. Statistically I would be interested to know how many female owners of guns have had a visit off the police in similar circumstances..very few I would guess. Admittedly, there are probably a few details on this particular case that we don’t know about.

This reminds me of a ridiculous scenario just after Dunblane where a serving soldier nearing the end of his career had a finger similarly pointed at him by his ex wife which saw his SGC revoked & meant that he could no longer shoot Rabbits/Pigeons in his spare time yet as a fully qualified Military Firearms Instructor was still able to conduct live firing (as the Range Conducting Officer & with fully automatic SA80 rifles) for Bosnia-bound BCR's (Battle Casualty Replacements) from his Garrison.

I've just been through all of this almost down to the t I went through 2 years of fighting and then I contacted the basc and within 2 week's of them being involved I got my firearms and shotgun certificates with all my guns back on Thursday so I'm taking all my guns to the gun Smith tomorrow to make sure that they are all still fine . I really hope this chap gets everything sorted I really do advise contacting the basc and please don't feel like you have done wrong because of poor police work

Outrageous the Police need to give full and frank information on revocation and seizure.Not only that what about financial compensation.You can't just seize guns and not arrest the individual and tell him why he,s being arrested,what's the criminal charge!!!!.Spurned exes and partner issues can melt into the most venomous of legal quadmire.When I split with my ex I knew she was vindictive so when I split I put both shotguns onto my mates SGC and a dated note inside my cabinet with a photo copy of my ticket.Sure enough couple of months later knock on the door local plod, You have made threats against your ex partner and frightened her by waving your shotgun about.We are going to take a statement and remove your guns. When I passed the officer my keys his face when he opened the cabinet said it all.I then explained I knew at some point this would happen.This poor chap needs to start the ball rolling with the Chief Constable and the PCA.Happening too often.Question for you Charlie do you think a legal premium could be added to your membership or Countryside Cover for this type of incident.Its not right to treat someone this way if they are not at fault.Stay safe kind regards.Tony

I feel for you Paul....Something similar happened to me. They came to my home out of the blue alleging I had been dishonest and could be a danger to the public. What an Insult... This was regarding a historical issue concerning a family member (whom did not live at my address) and not me. and my previous declaration of suffering from stress at work years before. and an off the cuff comment I made in passing about being worried about loosing my SGC. I had no recourse, nothing I said was listened to or taken into account...At all!!.. They said "Don`t worry its only for a couple of months" I knew even then that was an outright lie and they had no intention of returning my guns. What followed was months of me contacting the Firearms officer with either no reply or more excuses. They knew my certificate was up for renewal in a few months and if you ask me were biding their time. I sent in my renewal when the time came. this was shortly after BASC announced they were removing the Legal cover for their members from the 31st of July 2020. Hmmm I thought.... Low and behold, a few short days after the legal cover ended, I received a letter stating that my renewal had been refused. In my personal opinion they were no doubt aware that I would not be able to ask BASC for help any longer and would have to pay thousands of pounds to fight it. So now who was being dishonest here then?? They took away a pass time that I loved so much. My guns were eventually returned (As they were still legally my property) but were transferred to my brother and put on his certificate. They were in a terrible state. The barrels had rusted and needed a lot of work to restore them. It looked like they had been left propped against a wall in the car park for a year. They said "There's nothing stopping you still going shooting,) I would just have to be accompanied by my brother. As if that made up for it.... It didn`t. I feel totally let down by the system. I have been placed in a category I do not wish to ben in. Made to feel like a criminal, had my self esteem destroyed and my good character defiled. I cant remember a time when I felt so sad and rejected. If they genuinely believed I could be a danger to the public how come I could still go out carrying and using a shotgun, albeit with my brother? It is a disgraceful state of affairs when otherwise honest hardworking, diligent and conscientious firearm owners are treated like potential dangerous criminals with little or no defence available to the majority. Yes I still go pigeon shooting with my brother. but it just doesn`t feel the same. My brothers certificate is up for renewal now. I cant wait to see what they do next. ......Hmmm watch this space me thinks.

**UPDATE** Well, as I feared and almost psychically predicted at the end of my last comment. The police have now attacked my brother. During his renewal visit from the firearms officer came lame excuses littered with non relevancies they have had his pants down as well. Just in a different way. Again using another person(who does not have access to the guns) as a stick to beat him. They gave him three choices. 1, Have the guns transferred to "A friend" or RFD ( Not practical in his circumstances) 2. Hand them over to the police. 3. Sell them... So in reality they gave him only one choice. He had 28 days to make up his mind before they came to take them......All choices led to only one outcome.. No guns. He has now sold the guns (including mine) If he was giving the police risk concerns why give him 28 days. Surely if they were that worried they would have seized them immediately. I would love to see official and accurate statistics showing how many people have lost there guns in this way in the last 18 months. I suspect it would make very interesting reading indeed. I Can`t wait till they start attacking the air gun owners amongst us

In Australia, the government has digitised our health records. You can opt-out but not many people have. The police are combing through shooters medical records and even something as suffered stress in the past is enough to have your firearms removed from you. The difference between Aus and UK is that at least your given a reason and can appeal, but will cost $$$$.

Mr Cox did say in the interview that he has been advised he can contest it but it will cost him thousands of pounds. I understand that the guy responsible for the Plymouth shootings had some mental health issues and that has prompted the review of firearms certification in the force area, as the murderer was allowed to have his gun back and resulted in killing 5 people. Maybe there is something in Mr Cox’s background that ‘we’ all don’t know about. I doubt he’d want that broadcast in a public interview so he’s not going to mention it, is he?

Hopefully you get this sorted. My best mate who was a gamekeeper had his guns take from a wrong accusation. When he finally got his shotguns and rifles back they had loads of damage of which they would not be accountable for. Fingers crossed this sorts itself out

This beggars belief. Devon & Cornwall Firearms Licensing team made a catastrophic error reissuing the licence of the Keyham murderer. In my view there is nothing wrong withbthe system the fault lies with those administering it. Storm Trooper tactics are not the answer. This could have been handled far more tactfully he could have been given an opportunity to transfer his guns to a local RFD for storage. The only positive aspect of "siezure" is they have to follow a procedure that has guidelines and an appeal process. This is truly shocking!

@@welditmick Home office policies are not laws. Thats why they have to prove intent. No one gets charged for possession only possession with intent. Certificates are for the recording of numbers for game, sporting, testing, study ect ect and they will never put the home office in the doc. We need to stop using the word license and we don't have licences. Licences are for privileges not rights. Read 'Does the trigger pull the finger' and do your own research. It's very intresting to see what the actual policies, regulations, laws and rights are.

During the majority of the period from the Spanish armada invasion, the English government had a policy to repress playing sports like golf and bat sports in favour of archery and shooting. They viewed it necessary to have a skilled population that could be used for defense purposes. This is still the policy in Europe and is so strong in Switzerland that rifle training and rifle home storage is compulsory. When someone is killed by a driver does the government restrict the rights of every driver? No because it would be irrational, and amounts to collective punishment, so why does this happen to gun owners every time? Collective punishment is a punishment on a group for acts allegedly perpetrated by a member of that group. Because individuals who are not responsible for the wrong acts are targeted, collective punishment is not compatible with the basic principle of individual responsibility. Collective punishment is prohibited by Article 3 of the Geneva Convention.

I moved to Cornwall six months ago and brought my shotguns a rifles with me. I have emailed and phoned the Cornwall and Devon police about my move and sent my licences for change of address and so far I've had no response only to be told there is a back log. A bit worrying I think.

Something similar happened to me but with my air rifle n my ex pretty sure she phoned the police knowing I have it anyway the police came said they have had someone report that I have a gun so I said I have a air rifle he ask what I use it for so I said small game and targets he gave me the rifle back and said have a good day most police ive ever had to speak with for whatever reason have been pretty sound tbf but sounds like they are being pushed to do this they know it's wrong but it's do it or walk sad times for shooting and hunting heard there is talks to ban hunting rabbit and squirrel with dogs now can't do nothing legally soon 😡🖕

I am very much in favour of shooting community. If it’s unfair or the holder feels that he needs to contest, do it use the official litigation channels that forces don’t like as it is seen as civil action and they must pay as well. But have to say as well, there’s always 2 sides to a story. Why now is he seen as unsuitable. Domestic situations unfortunately are seen as potential to dramatically change home life, and high risk for things to happen. Relationships breaking for whatever reason and child care contact ARE a good reason for police to take precautionary action. Don’t think his licence should be revoked but temporarily suspended . He can also ask for the guns to be placed for storage at a RFD at his cost until a suitability interview is done. Get on the phone To your lawyer. And b4 keypad warriors jump on me , I have lived a very similar situation.

This Chap needs to make a formal "Subject Access Request" to Devon and Cornwall Constabulary under the GDPR legislation. They have to reveal what information they have about him, where it came from and who they have shared it with, and they have to respond within one months or get a penalty from the Information comissioners office.

Some of this has happened in New Zealand too, particularly since the socialist government got in. I had my license taken off me, (incorrectly it was later proved). However, I decided to voluntarily surrender it anyway because I only had a small rifle for rabbits (a duty of a previous job) so I wasn't using it.

It is almost to this point in Canada as well......of course combined with lesser sentencing for violent offenders who use firearms....and with an emphasis on hugs and healing centres....if you are a legal, vetted, responsible firearms owner you are fair game.....after all, we tend to not shoot back.

My ex wife made a reference in a solicitors letter to my firearms being in the house during our divorce. I immediately contacted my FAO who came to visit me for a chat while she was there. After explaining the situation and him seeing my calm and collected manner he left satisfied all was well. He could see that she was just causing trouble. It never takes much to invoke a knee jerk reaction in these 'woke' times. We all need to be careful.

Yet a friend reported a guy for walking around a housing estate with a shotgun, she believed he was banned from keeping, and West Mercia never turned out. I have reported poachers and a young boy running around with a 22lr and they didn't want to know about that either. To not give a reason or ask his side of any story is so wrong. I thought we had an innocent until proven guilty attitude in this country. Seems we are all guilty all the time if they deem it so. Big brother in action.

if you were a banker, solicitor a justice of the peace or some other exalted being you would still have your property as proper weight would have been given to your side of the story, but we must get the guns out of the hands of people who can't afford to defend their right to possess them for any reason, the nanny state recognises the right of idiots to make false accusations and hopes that the law abiding will be forced to give up their already hard to obtain and harder to retain sporting or vermin control guns because the cost of fighting for them is prohibitive. showing kids that the police are not the benign protectors of the vulnerable they ought to be, officers taking peoples property at gunpoint isn't that what criminals do?.

I have just listened to Paul Cox and what has happened above. Straight away it became clear the matter of legal costs stands out like a sore thumb. There is a story here Charlie? Field sports Britain is in a prime position to bring this to the fore of shooting in Britain. It’s the lack of legal help for shooters. Firstly, why has BASC removed the Legal insurance cover? Their excuse is absolutely Liam? Not a lot of its members used it. so what, did BASC ask any of its members if there wanted this cover removed? did that ask would they pay an extra few pounds more to keep this cover going? NO. This leaves its members at the hands of the police that may not be gun-friendly. So now knowing that people cannot afford to fight these cases on their own, you will see a lot more of this blanket removal of legally held guns Both NGA and BASC and others say you have access to a firearms expert. Which is great, but absolutely no use whatsoever to help with costs. Charlie do you or any of your staff have a spare 10 to £20,000 spare lining around? I am happy to be wrong with my next statement, but I believe that now only the CPSA are the only ones that include Legal help/ insurance with their membership. So, I will be leaving BASC and joining CPSA for this reason. Secondly. Again, I say Field sports Britain is in a prime position to start a go fund me page to help with this Pauls defense. I would happily donate.

CPSA include legal cover i belong to both but see no point in renewing BASC membership when it expires they just seem to rollover on every issue and didn't even think it necessary to inform us when they took away the legal cover safety net. They take our money then treat us with contempt

They removed the legal protection because they know that this will be happening more and more, so it will bankrupt them with how many people will want to take the police to court to get their property back.

Had he received a police Caution or been given any reason for the revocation? Not so new tactic employed via anti's, or ex-wives/husbands/partners? I'm given to believe he has every right to appeal and request information surrounding the reason and hope his local force legitimately reconsider the situation. Perhaps a letter to the Home Office & Chief Constable wouldn't go amiss, but the BASC were typically very good handling such matters. As always seems nowadays re FAC & SGC, we're each guilty til proven innocent if reported for whatever reason, but those who make false reports deservedly face charges. In the meantime he has the option to have the police transfer his firearms to an RFD for storage or transferred onto another / other's FAC/SGC holder ticket . Police storage facilities tend to be the bargain bin approach and irrespective of firearms value.
