I just talked Sensei Benny and Sarah and they confirmed to me that the opponent of Benny was a kungfu guy! So there we go! That clarifies any confusion. Sensei Benny also said that the kungfu guy did fuse it with some kickboxing, but the main foundations were Kungfu! Shoutout Dragon Fest Expo for connecting us!

Aside from being one of the most powerful and explosive kickboxers from that era, B Jet was also famous for his sportsmanship. He truly is a reflection of that era on multiple levels. A great fighter, martial artist, teacher and sportsman. Even though alot of the kickboxer were great sportsmen, B Jet went out of his way to make sure his opponent was ok during and after the fight! He was definitely a HEAVY influence on me in combat sports!👊🏽

Mr Kong Fu Tak isn’t just a Kung fu guy, he studied kung fu when he was very young. At that time there wasn’t many foreign martial arts available in Hong Kong, then he was sent to UK by his dad and he got a chance to learn boxing and kickboxing. According to one of his interviews, he had been told that he could clinch and knee before this fight against Benny, but when he arrived the venue, he was told that clinch and knee were not allowed

Sensei Benny “The Jet” Urquidez is a HomeTown Hero & trainer of a couple of siblings. I watched Benny as the 11 year old kid that I was, go from Point Comp ( he was winning GC at 16) to Full Contact (as it was called at the time). BTW Shotokan & Kempo were far more popular in Los Angeles, where we are from, than any other style at the time ….. though Chuck Norris had 9 Tang Soo Do Dojos throughout The City. *You need to do your research on Benny* He cleared House in Japan., defeating Champions & Top 5 Fighters. His Dad was a Pro Boxer , Mom was a Pro Wrestler & Everyone in the family fought, including his World Champion Sister. This was a Challenge- Pick Up Fight & Benny was going easy.A completely spontaneous & extemporaneous. *Benny is The Greatest KickBoxer of All•Time* Benny also defeated all 4 Thai Fighters he fought. His legendary move was a Jump Spinning BackKick to the Liver & one helluva hip toss from The Clinch. You YoungBloods need to become familiar with Halcyon days of American Martial Arts in The 70’s & it’s impact on today’s Martial Art Culture

Kong Fu Tak was karate and kung fu trained who switched to kickboxing and Muay Thai. It's interesting that because there's no knees, Benny instead throws a kind of short range stabbing front kick to the body on the break like at 7:10, chambering his knee super high to make room for it - a pretty unique technique to get around that particular ruleset!

Benny The Jet comes from a fighting family, his father was a boxer his mom was a professional wrestler. Benny studied many martial arts and boxing, he competed in point karate and made the transition to full contact karate, he was one of the first Americans to go to Thailand and beat the Maui Thai fighters, he also fought alot in Japan and was so popular he had his own comic book. Back in the 70s there was alot of transitioning going on with the introduction of safety gear and contact we soon learned alot of techniques didn't work. Benny was a founding father of modern combat sports and will always be respected in the community.

For the record, the HK fighter in white is not a Kung-fu guy. His name is 江富德 and he was one of the 3 top kickboxing and Thai boxing competitors in HK back in the 80s with a background in boxing, Thai boxing, and Karate. He's owned a successful Thai boxing/kickboxing gym in HK since 1985.

@FightCommentary I hate to disagree with Benny The Jet, but in this case he's simply mistaken (or misinformed) about his opponent. 江富德 might've been billed as a kung fu guy on purpose back then as an advertising gimmick, and his name in Cantonese is actually translated as "Kong Fu Tak" in English, which can also be misleading. If you can read Chinese, just look him up online. The man is a kickboxing legend in Hong Kong and has even beaten Billy Chow.

Full contact. I may be wrong but I would say this combat is under full contact rules. The satin trousers with the "karate" belt Mr Urquidez is wearing gives a hint. Another big one is the lack of low kicks or knee strikes. Under full contact rules all kicks were above the belt except sweeps. If I remember correctly it was similar to boxing and was the natural "upgrade" from karate. Then K1 came with the change in rules, basically introducing low kicks, and satin shorts without "karate" belts. And that was the thing until Muay Thai came through adding elbows. The evolution of "kickboxing" in the late 70's and 80's was wild. From "karate" to "full contact" with a variety of kicks then "kick boxing" with more "simple" kicking and after that Muay Thai came and became the king. I'm sure the popularity of certain films and actors had a lot to do with the "evolution". And that's without mentioning the Boom of ninja films and the subsequent variety of "ninja masters". As I said the 80's were wild.😂

You should try to track down Rick Spain vs Benny the jet in 1983ish. Rick Spain was world full contact Kung Fu champ at the time and they apparently went twelve good rounds together. Rick Spain is great btw he's a Kiwi that lives and teaches in Australia. Learnt wing Chun from William Cheung. Has a black belt in BJJ as well as karate. Learnt Kali/escrima, boxing, Muay Thai. Still teaches in Sydney both traditional wing Chun and MMA and BJJ. I used to train there ages ago (do Muay Thai these days) and he is legit there was always a strong focus on full contact sparring so the wing Chun is battle tested

Jerry, I should 'correct you' that Kong-Fu Tak is not a 'purely' KungFu guy as his base is Karate, boxing and Thai boxing. Form his interview few years ago, he said when he got kick by Benny on his eye, his vision has been reduced to 40%. Alos, the reason why no knees nor elbow, was because on the previous day of the match, the organisation changed the rules to kick and strike only.

I agree that Benny threw a mae geri at around 4:15ish, but I would say that the mae geri is a very different kind of kick than a push kick (teep). Push kicks are, mechanically speaking, something akin to actually stepping/stomping on an opponent. Mae geri instead uses the knee as a hinge and sends the ball of the foot into the target at a very high speed (this, as opposed to extending the entire leg into the target, a la the teep). Both great, just different. If you haven't already, you could probably teach yourself a basic mae geri on your heavy bag in 5 minutes, it's a very simple kick. Just make sure to pull those toes back.

Benny looks more beefed up. While the kung fu guy doesn't look really conditioned, and his strikes seem to lack power. Benny could have hurt the other guy more than he did, because he just seems more experienced. Benny would look more relaxed. That's probably because he was, and also much more experienced. If the kung fu guy had challenged Benny in the first place, good for him. Benny was at the peak of his game at the time, and Kung Fu Tak could have gained a great rep if he beat Benny. Bit like in the old west, where the young gun gained the rep by killing the old gunman!

This is one of the pick-upfights the Jet had on his earliest trips to Asia. The Asians wanted to find someone to beat "The Jet". They couldn't. He beat'em all!............😅

Benny stats 63-1 -57 KOs World Kickboxchampion fo over 20 years :D To me Benny wasnt fighting serious or most of the match because he never used his famous signatur kick not even once.

Yes that Kung Fu guy did well. Just goes to show it’s the fighter not the style. Didn’t have a glass chin and took shots well.

So who is Kung Fu guy? It's hard to imagine that a contestant in a fight with a celebrity like Benny the Jet would go forgotten.

Well Benny has extensive fighting experience & having practised and mastered nurmerous forms of martial arts. And it is clear the Kung Fu fighter does not have have the same experience or exporsure.
