Good lighting and shadows can hold the test of time. There are a lot of PS2/Xbox era titles that aged a lot better than many PS3/360 era titles, which looked good at the time but are held back by today's standards due to strange color filters, letterboxing, too much bloom, etc.

One thing I've beaten around in my design documents is like a "compiled demakes collection" as an alternative to a budget vs. new release approach. Like taking the core mechanics of a game, and whittling it down to a Top 9 roster of each title, to catch the competitive scene spirit of each title without doing all the legwork of a 100% remaster/recreation. Like for instance... a Tekken 3/Tag remake that only contains Ogre, Jin, Heihachi, Xiaoyu, Law, Eddy, Paul, King, and Nina; but still features Force, Ball, Time Attack, and Team Attack modes. Pair this with similar demakes of T5, TTag2, and T7 like a sampler disc and you're golden.
@TonyTheTGR7 ай бұрын
PS: As someone significantly more experienced in DoA and VF than myself, I'd be interested in hearing which titles you'd port like this, and what your minimized rosters would look like for those in particular!
@BainesMkII7 ай бұрын
While even further from a remake than VF1-in-VF4, I liked how Capcom added "recreations" of single player SF1, SFA, SF2, SF3, and SF4 in Street Fighter V. While it functionally was just SFV with restricted rosters, Capcom put a bit of effort into it. In a few cases where a character wasn't available, Capcom used a similar stand-in (such as using Balrog for SF1 Mike or G for SF3 Q). Also to help fill gaps, "appropriate" characters were sometimes added to a "game" (such as SF1 also including the Final Fight characters). Each "game" offered endings for all of its available characters, either recreations of the original endings, or completely new endings for stand-ins or new characters. Characters would receive retro/vintage outfits when available. When available, minigames and even secret boss conditions were included. Etc. It was a neat extra mode, and made a nice playable way to catch up on the history of the franchise.

Virtua Fighter remix was also available on PC, with a toggle to use the old or new graphics. It was my first VF game, and the only one until I bought Evolution later on. The demake mode would have been a dream come true to me, reliving the nostalgia of one of the first games I had on Windows 95. But as you said, they just took it out of the PAL versions for some reason, and I didn't even know it existed until almost a decade later, which was especially painful when I remember wondering what the new characters would look like in the old blocky form.

The removed intro is on KZbin (incidentally, it's animation is worse than the original...). There was an article, I believe, from 2007 or so that had side-by-sides of an old, overly-detailed sprite and a new one that made it into the final game.

@brandonchacon77457 ай бұрын
Great video! I do feel like many of these games don't get remakes because each new game holds a "remake" quality to it. Sure these games have different stories, but that's not what matters for the most part in fighting games. For example, A remake of SF2 in the SF4 Engine would just be SF4... Which is not the same for say remaining metal gear solid in a new engine. These games honor so much of their predecessor already that it's not worth making an entire new version of an old game when you can make a new one with the same characters. Some games are exceptional, because of game play mechanics or unique character selections (thinking 3rd strike compared to the rest of SF) and those games are probably the easiest to green light remakes for.
@baberuthless7 ай бұрын
That’s a great point since it would have to go beyond just graphics for a fighter to be a proper remake and not just a new game. The mechanics of tweaked would kinda have to go in the vein on hd remix perhaps

@@conradojavier7547 you misunderstand the point I'm making. I was referencing the comparison to Resident evil, and other remakes that take the spirit of the original with modern graphics and mechanics. HD remix is a great remake, what's also true is that it stays faithful to its old SF2 mechanics which makes sense for a fighting remake... Like I said in the end of that comment ("some games are exceptional, because of game play mechanics...") Some games don't change as much as street fighter does, there are plenty of games where the sequel is just a balance patch with more characters, new stages, and a new move or 2, which would make the old game less exciting to go back to.

Let me tell you, the HD versions of Street Fighters are dreadful. I stick to the classics. As for VF5 made in Dragon Engine, we ALL we finally waiting for the Yakuza characters being playable and not just the main VF characters cosplaying them. I mean, Akiyama going kicking asses would be so boss. Also, the true crossover 3D game we need is Tekken x VF. WE NEED IT! AND YES, TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT IS THE ULTIMATE REMIX EVER MADE. We all loved it. Perhaps one of the best Tekken games ever made even to this day (a lot of people still play it competitively to this day) BTW, as for 94RB there IS a bonus that the arcade version doesn't have: Playable Saishu Kusanagi. I mean, he's essentially his 95 self but hey. I liked it as it was, despite the overdesigning, and those characters are actually pixel art but rendered in bigger sprites (I have the sheets myself). Also, perhaps if we talk about remakes or re-editions, you should have mentioned KOF 2002UM and 98UM. Both games are like upgraded versions of the vanilla 2002 and 98 but adding their saga's missing characters, adding/improving stages, keeping the basic gameplay but adding more balance and further techniques (more noticeable in 98UM making EXTRA mode useful and making the new mix and max Ultimate mode the best of it all.

my first time coming around your channel, this is a dope video. I'll share my opinion on why fighting game remakes are uncommon: 1. The core player base preferred arcade perfect ports for most games in the early days (and those were rare), so for the most part, people prefer the arcade originals (this is also the same for the rhythm game community). 2. Anytime a new version of the game is made (SSF2T: HD Remix, USFII,) it tends to get ignored. HD Remix did have a buzz around it but the game caused a divide. Now there are Super Turbo players, and HD Remix players, because the games just aren't the same. But competitively Super Turbo is still played. Even Hyper Street Fighter 2 (Super Turbo's first sequel) gets ignored in favor for Super Turbo 3. Most of these old games got yearly updates, similar to Madden, NBA live and the like, and were also being released as separate titles. Now-a-days these updates are DLC. Try to remember buying Street Fighter 4, then Super Street Fighter 4, then the Arcade Edition Patch, then Ultra Street Fighter 4. 4. Just make a sequel. As much as I'd love a "Playable" Street Fighter 1 with its whole roster, I just know it'll never happen. Especially since there is a world narrative in these fighting games. In this regard, SF Alpha 2 is really a remake of SF Alpha 1, not a sequel as it serves to undo everything SF Alpha 1 did.

Remakes are kind of a hot topic when it comes to "Are they good or bad?" I personally don't have too much of a problem with them, but I understand some problems people have. As for fighting games, well there aren't really any remakes I could want, most of the time I'd rather have a remaster or port or collection, but if I had to pick one game to be remade, I'd pick one that probably no one would pick, Castlevania Judgment, it's not a horrible game in my opinion, but I can get why most fans don't like it, you wouldn't have to change much either, just take the game, make it play better in a different style or try to make the idea of its gameplay better, and give us the regular designs for the characters as their default, instead of the new ones, I'd have no issue if they were alt costumes, and plop the rest of the stuff in the game unchanged aside for when it needs to be because of how the gameplay would change. Do all that and I think we'd have a pretty good Castlevania fighter.

The difference between remaster and remake is quite clear by definition. A remaster means they took the original data and ported it to more powerful hardware that could output closer to the original master. Something like Grandia 2 or Okami where the games were made with much higher resolution than the hardware could handle so they had to be downgraded. When they port the master files to a more powerful system, they no longer had to scale them back. A remake is when they have to actually create new data. If they need to redraw a sprite or create whole new polygonal models, they've made something new. Hence re-making it. New modes or anything else are just bonuses. Even adding new modes to something that's just a remaster doesn't make it a remake since it's still the same data arranged in a different way.
@Greenmeanie1237 ай бұрын
I agree with all of this. That being said the video game industry themsekves be fukckin up this definition like metroid prime remaster on the switch has redone models and graphics but its still called a remaster. Cant blame folks for being confused when shit like that happens

People think a remake has to completely change the story, gameplay and level design ever since RE2 Remake and FF7 Remake came out. It's like nobody remembers 1:1 remakes existed before those games. We had games like Super Mario All Stars back on SNES that remade all 8 bit Mario games in 16 bit graphics. And yeah the industry themselves a part of the problem, I believe Crash Bandicoot Insane Trilogy and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 were also called remasters by the devs.

I don't how common this perspective is amongst Street Fighter fans, but I think the Redone character designs for SF2 Remix look great in solitude. However, the decision to replicate the animations directly from the original SF2 highlighted the stiffness of some motions, and it didn't mesh well with the more detailed sprites. Which I think is where most of the controversy stemmed from outside of "I don't want change". I don't know if redoing them would have been on the table either (or what the SF fans wanted), since SF4 was already in the works as the next new thing, and projects relating to SF2 tend to act as a safe investment for Capcom.

I feel like with any games, the early 3D ones seem like the best candidates to be remade with a nice graphical update and extra content. Because they visually aged the worst but did tend to be pretty different in gameplay because developers really where experimenting at the time. Mortal Kombat 4 would be the Mortal Kombat game I'd choose for a remaster, going with the Mortal Kombat 4 gold roster of course with maybe a few additional characters if they make sense to be there in the story at the time. Could have some extra costumes and stages too. But all the moves, stages, pulling weapons during a fight and all that, could all be there. Remade endings too with better voice acting and animations since those all where pretty awful. Seeing how every Mortal Kombat seems to have several characters who only appeared in that one game before getting ditched or being reduced to a cameo appearance or obligatory appearance in either Trilogy or Armageddon since they included everyone, there is also some extra appeal there too. MK 4 has Kai, Jarek, Reiko and Fujin who don't appear much, Tanya is rare too. Could also be interesting if some of the extra characters are actually from later in the series adapted to MK4 gameplay if they'd make sense to be there in the timeline. The MK kids couldn't be there since no time skip, but Kenshi could be there, possibly before he went blind even. Noob Saibot could be there since he was initially planned to be. Kano too since Jarek uses his moveset anyway.

Now that you point it out, it's really surprising how few fighting game remakes there are in comparison to other genres. Then again, fighters may be the genre that's changed the least since their inception point. Not a bad thing, it's just that the genre nailed things down early and didn't need drastic overhauls. I am curious why fighting remasters (like MvC Origins) tend not to sell too well though. Maybe genre enthusiasts either want to focus on the newest games everyone is playing or already own whatever old game that's no longer available on modern platforms if that's the one they want to get into?
@elneco46547 ай бұрын
Well, those remasters end up not selling too well because of just being the games few want to play (For example, Darkstalkers Resurrection has the iffy Ds3 and the first Ds instead of Vampire Savior, MvC Origins has MvC1 and MSH instead of MvC2 - though to be fair MvC2 was already online at the time) and as of this day and age most old games nowadays have much more ease of access (and in fact said means now add stuff that isn't even available in those remasters such as frame data and have even implemented training modes).

Tekken Tag tournament is still special. It was the only Tekken to bring back all the players from Tekken 1, 2, 3, and even add never before seen players... And I believe it had Tekken bowling, which my wife would play with me.

Yeah...KOF 94 Rebout was unnecesary. The only possitive some of the remix tracks (AST) are very good Makes me wonder why SNK didn't just make a remake of KOF 95 After all, '95 was an updated version of '94 Imagine a remake of KOF 95 with characters more "balanced" and with the roster of the original 95 roster plus the American Sports Team. 😊 Edit: I really wanted a remake of KOF 2001 I don't hate the game, in fact I really like the unique gameplay and the striker system. If only they hadn't rushed its development.

My main takeaway for why fighting game remakes don’t happen is the replay ability of these games and the meta as well. Third strike wouldn’t be third strike anymore if they change the balancing of the game and remade some of the directions taken like the sound chun li makes when she whiffs a button.
@Michirin98017 ай бұрын
Though it's not official, there's a fanmade remake of Street Fighter 1 made with Mugen which is pretty cool, and my favourite fighting game series, Asuka 120%, is comprised entirely of remakes lol

regarding soul calibur and tekken tag, only the graphic part of the engine were remade. the gameplay is the exact same (same hitboxes, frame data, speed etc..) which explain why both versions could be played competitively regardless of the system. regarding SF2HD remix it's true that they had to cut graphical assets because in the early days of 7gens consoles the xbox live and psn imposed a strict restriction in the file size of digital games. if it was released later in the life cycle of the console, the game could have looked better.

I think a key problem is that with a single player remake, you can add new mechanics and mix and match with the content as seen fit. With multiplayer driven games, there is the fine line on how much new stuff you want to add/adjust without changing the core mechanics and roster most people expect to be, and how much would rather just merit a new game/title at that point, Like with KoF 94, if they spent a higher budget with the sprites and added new mechanics and perhaps changed a few moves anf shit, is it still kof 94? From a business standpoint im sure companies are aware that a new game in a competitive series sells more than a remake, and several games have proven that for the worse. I have had this happen in a rts mod im working. Core mechanics affect a lot of player perception and muscle memory and while some qol are well received, many think they detract of what the spriit fo the game is. In short, they are by definition, divisive
@baberuthless7 ай бұрын
Very good point, I think yes to your question on if they did a revamp of kof 94 it would still be a remake oer a reboot. As long as it has the same Plot and charcaters then that essence is still there. If the mechanics are refined and perhaps not replaced, I think that adds to it being a remake too. but like you said theres a fine line. Like if KOF 94 played and looked exactly like KOF 15 Id say its a remake still but if it played like KOF 11 with its tag mechanic thats harder to argue a little.
@Alevice7 ай бұрын
As much as i play the games for the plot, the reality is that the marketing point is pvp imo. At least thats how i see it. But i think in perhaps older games. What happens when you add sf styled parry to sfa for example

Other than KOF '94 ReBout, '99 Evolution, '98 Ultimate Match and 2002 Unlimited Match exist. 2002's was far superior to the product that came out seven years prior, and '98 UM was a nice novelty bringing back everyone from the Orochi saga (except '94 Kyo and Nakoruru). However, I want to see a KOF XI remake. I heard SNK lost the source code to KOF XI, but if they produce a from-the-ground-up remake, that would be amazing. No non-canonical dream match KOF had tag-team gameplay, but it would be sweet to see a KOF XI remake in the modern era and have everyone from 2003 back in.

I also played Third Strike on Xbox live thanks to the street fighter 15th anniversary collection. People were crazy good at that game.
