@@gamalcastile Well I'm absolutely flattered by the response, your father seems like an extremely interesting and educated man. I wish him all the luck in the world getting back on his feet once its all over. In Minnesota (Where I am) its about over, so I hope that's the same for you guys too!

Question: The triremes had hoplites onboard. I believe wearing linothorax. The question is what if one fell into the water? The shield, spear and eventually helm could come off quickly. Could you swim in a linothorax? Could you hurry out of one?
@gamalcastile3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a linothorax guy. There are only a few references to linen corselets and a couple are from the Iliad about one particular polis whose warriors wear linen corselets, and there are some others about gifts of linen corselets given by foreign powers (like the Egyptians) to Greek dignitaries. I'm a leather spolas guy. I think the tube & yoke styles (called a spolas) were mostly made from leather, a very cheap, common, and easy to use and repair commodity, rather than expensive and laborious stacked linen corselets. Anyway, I think in any heavier armor like bronze or bronze scaled spolae, if the hoplite couldn't get it off he'd simply drown. They are simply tied on, so undoing the tie or cutting the cords would effectively allow you to discard the armor.

Do you ever come to Connecticut or Massachusetts? I would like to come and see one of your lectures.

Unfortunately I don't. I wish I could though. If you have a university or college up there that would like to setup a lecture, then maybe I could?

Just wondering if you are gonna continue working on your website?
@gamalcastile Жыл бұрын
No plans at the moment. My partner in this endeavor, Mike DeMik, passed away last year. All the covid restrictions in 2020 pretty much killed my lectures as well.

@@gamalcastile Hope you can find someone else to help you with this, and get back into teaching. Sorry for your loss, may he rest in peace. And thank you for posting these lectures on youtube, since they have taught me a lot and kept me entertained for a while.
