Earlier this year, at Milan San Remo, we were lucky enough to get our hands on Filippo Ganna's Pinarello Dogma F12 X Light. The Ineos Grenadier powerhouse, and time trial World Champion, rides a 59.5cm frameset with absolutely huge 54/42 tooth chainrings; topped off with...wait for it... rim brakes! This bike has spent a lot of time at the front of this year's Giro d'Italia, and has probably seen more watts than any other bike in the bunch!

Should Ineos Grenadiers switch to disc brakes? Should other pro teams go back to rim brakes? Let us know your opinion in the comments below!

I think the bike supplier sponsor pressures them to use disc. If team management and riders had the choice, I think we'd see 100% back on rim brakes.

So far Ineos have had no problem in pouring freezing rain and steep twisty wet mountainous descents. They've dominated on tricky fast gravel downhills and steep mountain climbs. Conclusion: there is no disadvantage to rim brakes for pro riders no matter what the marketing department may say. Advantages are lighter bike weights across the board, slightly better aerodynamics due to no spinning disc sitting in the wind, and faster wheel changes when riders get a flat tyre.

It does have integrated cabling, but you can't integrate a front rim brake cable. Well, you can but it would be ridiculous, the bends the cable would have to make would negate the benefits from having it integrated. As the rear brake cable can go way more straight it is integrated. Also the Di2 cables are integrated.

I had a 61cm Scott CR1SL HMX, it easily built into sub 6.8kg WITH pedals (frame and forks were 1238g incl headset cups) The Xlight isn't designed around ultra lightness though the frameset for a medium is circa 1100g, that seatpost for instance is about aero not weight, the MOST bars and stem similarly aren't lightweight offerings and neither are the Shimano tubular wheels which are 1850g. my 50mm Campag Bora One's are almost 600g lighter!

Back in the day we used to go touring on 52/42 and a 12-26, well I did some 31 years ago and even getting around some of the lesser slopes in France. Beryl Berly Burton used to ride at least a 54 in the 1960s, I'm sure when the gradients get steeper he won't be using that 42, not even close.

@@smallhatshatethetruth7933 Quick repairs are darn near impossible with hydraulic disc brakes. With a rim brake setup I need a 4mm Allen key to do any maintenance. I travel and ship my bikes around to race and it was a PITA with internally routed disc brakes. The nail in the coffin was when I had hydraulic cable kink, leaving me with no front brakes in a hotel room the night before a race. To put a bike in a bike bag you must lay the handlebars flat, but that is darn near impossible to do without kinking the stiff hydraulic housing. With external rim brakes, I can lay the handlebars flat and remount them in 60 seconds. Not to mention having to deal with disc brakes warping everytime you grab a handful of brakes on a descent. Nothing more annoying than ting ting ting ting ting

@@jkk916 This makes absolutely no sense. By the time you’re experience “high” G-Forces, you shouldn’t be on the brakes anymore, (car or bike) and hitting a pothole with rim or disc brakes makes zero difference whatsoever. @@RyonBeachner It still seems you don't know what are you talking about. You are experiencing "G forces" or better said, acceleration and deceleration when you are on the brakes, when you hit a pothole and when you are in the corner. I think you should at least agree that soft controls are generally not good for racing.
@RyonBeachner
@RyonBeachner 3 жыл бұрын
@@jkk916 Soft controls are indeed not good for racing, if they were, ABS would be used, and it’s the first thing to go. However with that, “soft controls” is a relative term, and the bite point, pedal/lever length, piston diameters all play a role in that, and I’ve driven some cars that have softer pedals than others that aren’t an issue at all. There’s a fairly easily achieved point of diminishing return, as it’s less about force than it is modulation. As for Lateral/Longitudinal acceleration, I’m very well aware that both exist, however I would posit that the limit of longitudinal deceleration has more to do with the tire than it does the brake, and instead what disc brakes are providing is, as mentioned above, better ability to modulate those forces. Sure, the rider can go over pot holes and lock the brakes with either system, however most riders have brains and don’t do this, and if they did I’d consider it a fault of the rider and not the system.

Manufacturers usually give a slight weight allowance from the maximum weight rating. Same as a rated 10 ton bridge max. weight limit. Is actually built to spec as a 15 ton bridge.

@@iMadrid11 I am an engineer, I know there is probably factor of safety of 1.5 in use but that is because there can be inconsistecies and defects in the material or carbon layup or unforseen additional loads. Rim. I have so many problems with disc brakes… Constant rubbing, bent disc rotors, the struggle of making sure you don't contaminate them and air bubbles in the mineral oil. Must be a pain for pro teams with a handful of riders making sure the bikes are A1 at all times. Don't get me wrong, disc brake performance are excellent (if you keep them cleaned and maintained.) But I would sacrifice that good breaking performance and rid rim. It's just so much easier and simple. I hope it doesn't die.
