April 2017, filling potholes in a driveway. Using a 1988 Caterpillar D4c bulldozer to spread shale, than tailgating 3/4 gravel over the top.

As I understand it, in order to remove a pothole, you must cut it out to a point lower than the deepest point of the hole. I wonder if the underlying old potholes, even when covered with the shale and top coat may continue to cause problems in the future. I love your videos Andrew, real jobs, real used equipment, real breakdowns and real top quality work. Keep up the great work!

Steve Mitman thanks. I've seen pot holes completely cut out, than filled with small gravel than come back in a few months. Filling them with a thick layer of big stone seems to last much longer.

Looks like they are taking pre-orders. I would want to see what reviewers think before slamming down $450 for them. They won't work with my Phantom 3 Advanced, but they will work with the Phantom 4 and newer. They look sweet! I have a iPad mini as well and it's nice, but depending on the sun, there can still be a pretty wicked glare. Sometimes I have to use a shade or cover myself with a blanket or jacket. These goggles would be amazing!

You don't "fix" potholes in loose aggregate roads, you rip the whole road and re-do it. Strong toothed bucket on skid steer will break it up then use the dozer to put a nice crown in the road and be done w/ it. You can't fill in pot holes-----which is why they keep coming back. Next road, rip it loose, smooth it back out.
@AndrewCamarata6 жыл бұрын
M Hamma yes good advice. I've had good luck filling them while covering the entire road with a thick layer of large stone though. That repair has been lasting well there.
@mhamma65606 жыл бұрын
I could see adding an entire thick layer as you've done here working as you've got plenty of new surface. Not sure how the long term affect would be, but if you've laid down enough, I'd bet it'd be okay. I've seen some folks just add an inch or two of gravel thinking the problem is solved, and it's right back to it in less than a year. I've got roads on slopes and the only option is to break up the entire surface and re-do it. Even if adding gravel, I'll first rip it up. Gravel roads are cheap and easy, but they do require regular maintenance. Most of the time a good box blade w/ rippers will get it done, sometimes I've got to use the track loader to rip. Clay and granite gravel can make for one hell of a hard surface. Of course a road grader makes quick work of such things but you need a PHD to be proficient with those things :D A skilled grader operator can knock out miles of road before lunch, ditches cleared, surfaced redone, nice crown in the middle.......
@mhamma65606 жыл бұрын
Good video on gravel roads.....of course you don't have a $250k grader, but good tips you might be able to achieve w/ a 6way blade. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXSwnIuKgtOcaZo
@AndrewCamarata6 жыл бұрын
Very good information, I agree. I feel that large stone tracked in with steel tracks makes a much longer lasting road.
@jayphillips40586 жыл бұрын
When there's a thick enough layer of fines, I've cut them out and regraded with a harley rake, then the same procedure here. Seems to work pretty well, although using the weight/tracks of a D4 is a much better practice. Correct road crown % for a given grade makes a considerable difference in longevity.

Armchair critic here.. As potholes form, with traffic and rain, a "concrete bowl" forms which fills up with water. As it's splashed out, the gravel is thrown out with it. Adding new rock into and over the potholes is a temporary fix, as you will likely see after one winter season. Prolly should have cut the road down to get rid of the darn potholes before topping with the shale. You're still doing great work, but, yeah... 😊

I thought I'd seen every one of your videos. I like every one so I know I've watched it. I can't believe I missed this one. Good to get caught up. A question on this video. I thought you would fluff up the existing road material first and then top off with new material. Since this was a problem that just repeats itself I figured this would be the approach because doesn't the new material just push out of the old pot holes? This was done three years ago.....how did it hold up?
@banjamer5 жыл бұрын
4-6% crown on a gravel rd. Potholes are a result of poor drainage. It's best to cut in a shoulder depression that is lower than the road bed so water can drain out of the subbase.

The problem is never the topping. The weakness is the subgrade - probably organics. If you want to make the pothole go away forever dig out 2 feet at each hole,dispose of the material and fill with gravel.

The road would not get so many pot holes if you used a roller on the first layer. Gong over it with the dozer only gives it around 5%-20% compaction. If it is not compacted properly, it leads to pot holes. You should also compact the second layer with a roller (smooth drum).
