I don't like how everyone phrases this as a meme ban, because it's so much worse than that. It gives people the wrong impression as if it's a small thing that will only affect a small part of the internet but it will do so much worse than what is even discussed here. This wont benefit the large corporations in the long run, in fact it will most likely screw them over as a lot of music and films will get less publicity either due to the lack of content creators getting the word out if they are lucky, at worst social media platforms will decide it's not worth dealing with the E.U. and will simply cease operations there, resulting in millions of dollars in lost revenue for everyone involved and will likely screw over the entire internet as a whole.

This is aboslutely terrifying. My entire life is the internet, the internet helped in constructing who I am today, if it's all taken away, then who am I anymore? I would lose the ability to be joyful, a lot of things I would usually enjoy would be reduced to faint memories. from what I can find, Article 13 isn't happening because on March 20 2019 MEP asked for it to be deleted from the directive and 348 voted towards that. I'm not completely sure what that actually means but it looks like it's no longer happening.

It's for entertainment purposes and the creator is allowed to make money off of it. If Article 13 goes through then it should apply to not only the internet but every other platform for creativity. Paintings, clothes (only the first company that came up with pants is allowed to sell them) cars, etc... I could name hundreds of industries that should be affected if article 13 goes through for social media. Because this is bigger than just memes and songs. This should affect everything creatively. Funny how Cotton on can sell Disney designed shirts or Michael Jackson shirts and Disney and Michael Jackson's estate will be okay with cotton on making money out of it. It's not fair and it's just another way to take control over what people should think and how they should act. Disappointing.

So basically in countries this is implemented in, the people will no longer have any other perspective presented to them EXCEPT what the large media corporations want them to have? Not to be overly political, but this is WAY bigger of an issue than losing memes or even thousands of jobs (both tragedies of their own). This could affect people’s ability/right to get a second opinion or perspective. I think we can all agree that news networks (for example) have their own agenda and are KNOWN for not always telling us the whole story. Part of the beauty of youtube is being able to see what the news won’t tell us; eyewitness videos and/or opposing opinions (gasp). Alienating a country and not allowing outside content to be viewed will cause an informational blackout, and only letting one perspective be shown is kind of what’s done in countries run by dictators.
