@j.p.58185 жыл бұрын
Filmento everything the villain did in civil war was carried by coincidences. Tony has No arc, his character just magically conforms to the story being told. cheesy jokes deflated the stakes and the end battle was a 2 on 1 cop-out, why not have a real winner in one on one combat after that marketing? Now its ok to have your “favs” but BVS UE is the superior film objectively speaking. Also it’s 3 years later and civil war doesn’t hold up...the cgi is cartoonish Yet BVS looks like Beauty defined to this day.

BvS was meant to form a team civil war meant to separate a team. I love BvS and i can say WB tried to have it both way we had lex pulling the strings trying to put the heroes against each other and the trinity coming together to stop doomsday. This video was a little off putting most of your issues are all plot points working in the back ground.... especially in the ultimate cut....the martha scene is not meant to be rational batman can't be thinking rationally he is emotionally unstable when it comes to his parents...there are all this storytelling elements playing in the back ground. Yes it could have easily been a better BvS movie if they just focused on the conflict you know you enjoyed Jese's over the top performance and blowing up ms.incredible and standing cynicaly on the top of the tower as both gladiators aproach each other. WB also wanted to do a dawn of justice movie and what i got was an epic trinity movie. What if despite of the title this movie was always meant for the heroes to short out their differences and personal issues and team up to fight aggainst an impersonal eminent threat like these character always do whenever the world's finest meet each other. For making BvS better all i would suggest a little fleshing out of the plot to incorporate more team dynamics and call the movie just dawn of justice....damn it WB you just couldn't resist the title Batman v Superman could you. But marvel's fan can be grateful WB did or they wouldn't have green lit civil war who knows what the state of the MCU would have been then. And this leads to one more point subtly is the key if you are loud and flashy you may face unjust scrutiny...ambition can promise great thing but sometimes promises can be broken. #ReleaseTheSnydercut

In Civil War there are also several scenes where Steve and Tony reaches out, trying to resolve their conflict, showing us, the audience, that they value eachother, they value each other's opinion and they value the relationship they have. This means that the final personal conflict is all the more devastating and also why you can have a scene like the one where Cap drops his shield; because Steve, whatever disagreement he has with Tony, _values_ Tony and so when Tony tells him that he doesn't deserve the shield, it matters. If Steve and Tony had had no prior relationship or had been antagonistic from the start, why would Cap give up the best weapon he's got? It would have made the severing of their ties less impactful.

Steve and Tony were already antagonistic from the start. First, there's the argument in Avengers 1 (Cap: Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off and what are you??? Civil War was basically the boiling point between these 2 characters.

In general, I would also liken BvS to Spider-Man 3, in that BvS tried to cram three distinct major antagonists for Superman into one movie (Batman in a disillusioned and paranoid state, Lex Luthor, and Doomsday) and Spider-Man 3 had three separate villains struggling for screen time (Harry Osborn becoming the New Goblin, Sandman, and Venom). In a way, BvS is arguably even more crowded and compact than Spider-Man 3 on the front, with Harry Osborn and Batman harboring a vendetta against Spider-Man and Superman, before teaming up with said heroes for the finale. Harry Osborn at least had two prior movies, to flesh out his character and explain why he hates Peter Parker so much and intends to mutate himself into another Green Goblin. Batman, on the other hand, only has a passing Easter egg of the vandalized Robin suit to barely explain why he was no longer in his right mind, to the point of breaking his one rule by killing random criminals in cold blood. On top of that, Spider-Man 3 also at least has the broader theme of revenge to help tie the "Peter Parker vs. Harry Osborn", "Spider-Man vs. Sandman", and "Spider-Man vs. Venom" a little more seamlessly into one story.

I think a big factor is also likeability... Most of the Marvel Characters have their own movie that builds up the character and you see their funny sides. That makes them more relatable. If anything harmful or serious happened to them, we as veiwers would also feel something. Superman's character is almost non existant. He's always brooding and too serious / angry or emotionless. And when that person dies, you dont feel it. Batmans is also another serious brooding one. Combine the two and you get one boring broodfest.
@Ploopbloopz5 жыл бұрын
That's DC for ya
@danielkeller54245 жыл бұрын
That's because he was just learning about humanity and their ways. Having Batman there to kill him for the city's destruction is not the reason all. If everyone wasn't so blind, later on they would have found out that Zack was planning on making him into the version of Superman that all you perfecto happy go lucky Superman fans want. Instead of complaining and saying oh it's so dark. You can't always get what I want. There are different versions of Superman as well. Not all of them are smiles and lighthearted.
@cbowman85185 жыл бұрын
Hold up Clark Kent, the boy next door from middle of nowhere Kansas raised on a farm all his life by two humans is "just learning about humanity" now? I'm sorry, did Snyder have a couple of penguins in the sewers of Gotham raise this boy or something. Superman's been growing up with and around humans literally his entire life. His entire character is summed up with a good natured farm boy crossed with the perfect being. Granted Snyder apparently forgot that the Superman is supposed to be a superman in heart and mind as well and this edged out angst fest in tights couldn't comfort a scared or sad child if they were surrounded by a field of puppies. If this had all been a big setup for Injustice I honestly wouldn't have been surprised.
@fatezero86625 жыл бұрын
Wtf are you talking about, Man of Steel already did that for fuck sake. Then all of a sudden he becomes brooding and emo in BVS, sure maybe it's the trauma of killing Zod and countless lives that he wasn't aware of while fighting but then this just shows you how robotic of character Snyder made Supes.
@fatezero86625 жыл бұрын
Plus superman is symbol of hope, he is of pure heart and optimism no matter what especially the powers he has. But what BVS presented is like him having turned into some kind of a god which is so wrong in so many ways.

it seems that all the failing dc movies don't see that a bombastic final fight isn't winning the crowd. in civil war, the argument between cap and tony (the one where tony callls wanda a wmd) is a quiet moment, and it's not the only one. in between action scenes (police escape, airport, soviet base), they put these quiet moments where we can get emotionally invested in the struggle. by the time tony decides bucky has to die, we as the audience understand this reaction, and the emotional climax runs in sync with the action. when tony states that cap doesn't deserve his shield (because the maker was killed by the person he's defending with it), he drops it. this is heavy stuff, because the shield symbolizes so much about cap (before the shield, he was a dancing monkey for propaganda, before that he was a sick weakling). he's willing to throw all that away because he cares about bucky, and he'd rather be a fugitive than lose his friend.

To bad that the MCU ultimately can't make a movie about an ideological rift like Civil war was in the comics. Tony abandons his own ideology halfway through the movie, and he never brings up the need for having an authority controlling the avengers again. It's just dropped. Tony does not fight out of ideological reasons in the comic, he just wants revenge against Bucky. A cliche you-killed-my-parents storyline instead of a ideological conflict. That is the level that the Russo brothers write at.
@kenjinpiniteu4 жыл бұрын
@@disrupt94 Eh, I'm kinda glad they didn't. The comic version of Civil War was good as an idea but was executed terribly. It started off well with two sides pushing on the passing of the Superhuman Registration Act, but as the story went on and on, Tony's ideology shifted from 'having oversight on superhuman/meta individuals' right into 'suspension of habeas corpus, and arrest without trial'. It had the opportunity to view 2 negating perspectives on heroes as a whole, but instead of the grey-on-grey moral conflict (meaning both sides would have reason to be supported), it just went black and white when Maria Hill (who was on Tony's side/Pro-Registration) started arresting Steve and other enhanced individuals without warrants (and the fact that the Registration Act wasn't even passed yet at the time). Not to mention, Tony hiring publicly declared villains to ground and arrest those on Steve's side. Yeah, it did start off as an ideological conflict that would have provided reasonable debate, but as the story progressed up to Steve's death, Tony went from a reasonable pro-Registration Act figure, and straight up fascist (especially when he flat out told Spiderman that everyone who didn't register did not have rights, not even to a lawyer). The MCU version was scaled down, and when you compare it to the comics, it does feel a lot restrained because we only see it from the Avengers (whereas the comic version had the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Defenders, cosmic organizations like the Carol Corps, the Imperial Guard, etc.). However, I did like how the MCU version had me torn on who to support: I understood Tony, and I also sympathized with Steve's cause. By the time the movie ended, I couldn't say who was right, but I can definitely say that neither was wrong. The comic storyline? Not so much. It was either martyred Steve Rogers, or Nazi-lite Tony Stark. One was good, the other clearly in the wrong. I will say, though - I agree with your take on Tony. It felt as if the whole conflict for an overarching, overseeing authority on metas was kinda forgotten. I hear that it will be a plot point in The Winter Soldier & Falcon show though - since both characters are associated with SWORD, and maybe to an extent, WandaVision as well?
@disrupt944 жыл бұрын
@@kenjinpiniteu " but instead of the grey-on-grey moral conflict (meaning both sides would have reason to be supported), it just went black and white when Maria Hill (who was on Tony's side/Pro-Registration) started arresting Steve and other enhanced individuals without warrants (and the fact that the Registration Act wasn't even passed yet at the time). Not to mention, Tony hiring publicly declared villains to ground and arrest those on Steve's side." Using the wrong methods for a noble cause really only makes Tony a tragic anti-hero. Flawed individuals can snap under pressure. I agree that it's not perfect, but it was a fight where you were allowed to ask yourself who is right between two ideological standpoints, controll vs freedom. Extreme methods on one part does not mean that it's 100% black and white. Tony did not want Spiderman hurt. Tony wanted to talk the conflict out when Captain America attacks him (atleast that is how Tony woudl view it). It's not as black as white as you suggest. " Tony hiring publicly declared villains" Cap and Co ARE public villains. Perhaps even more so in the movie where Cap sides with Bucky who really could be a double-agent by Hydra for all Steve knows. in the comic, Cap kicks Punisher out for killing two villains about the join Caps team if I remember correctly. Thing is, the Russo brothers could have written a Tony that was more gentle in his methods, and the conclict could still be ideological. They had the perfect arc for it, and they dropped it in favor of generic paste that makes Tony look like an absolute bellend regardless. He has faced mind-controll in two movies allready. Wanda is on his freaking team. It makes no sense for Tony to be mad long term, but not bring the conflict up again once He and Cap reunites. Cap about to kill his old friend and let's himself be arrested because he realizes how much blood and horror their rift has caused, that's an emotional climax far beyond them breaking up but Steve writes a cute little Letter and they unite without real problems against Thanos.

@Oscar Rivers 'Humans trying to be gods' Thor's arc in Endgame and the entirety of Homecoming, just to name some, goes against that. Also, humans trying to be gods is not that unrelatable either. For example, let's look at Tony's arc altogether. He experiences the chitauri invasion. If you had the power and resources to try and safeguard the Earth for another invasion like it, you'd do it, won't you? That's why Tony tries 'playing god' in Ultron. Likewise, there are reasons for characters wanting to be god. What I'm trying to say is that there are exeptions if you look into it, and that the 'Humans trying to be gods' isn't necessarily a flaw.
@LegendPurpleDragon1525 жыл бұрын
Oscar Rivers Their points of view are TOLD to us, but we don’t EXPERIENCE them. CW works because we saw how those get there and like this video points out, the conflicts are personal. BvS is a cash grab that spends too much time setting up future movies than focusing on the movies they got. Also we know what DC is about. And any of the movies Snyder had unlimited control on sucked (before you bring up Wonder Woman, he had people to tell him ‘no that’s stupid’ on.) Shazam was good because it embraced the spirit of the character, while still showing Billy become heroic in the end, as well as had a well crafted sequential narrative that knows to keep the focus on the title character, where it belongs. Also Snyder didn’t direct it, and considering that the man hates superheroes as a concept, especially Superman, that’s a good thing.

What made Civil War so amazing as an experience was that Tony and Steve had so long to build up a relationship. We saw them laugh, cry...grow as people. That's not the case with BvS. We had, what, a movie with Superman and none with Batman? We know next to nothing about them.
@sorryifoldcomment8596 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, and even in Civil War, Tony & Steve reunite and become friends again right before the final fight. Which I think was a great decision, because it confirms how built up their relationship is & how much they don't like fighting each other...right before the heartbreaking end. Despite beating each other up and fighting earlier, both physically & verbally...the moment Tony finds out he was wrong he rushes to help Steve & Bucky, and despite still disagreeing about the Accords, Steve is immediately happy to see Tony the moment he learns he's there to help & no longer after Bucky..."It's good to see you Tony," - "You too Cap." As they proceed to go face the super soldiers threat together, a team once again. 😢 _(Steve's reaction when Tony finds them & starts talking is also perfectly contrasted with Bucky's reaction. Steve reacts positively and immediately trusts that Tony is there to help within a few lines, while Bucky keeps his gun trained on Tony the whole time, despite Tony saying he's not after him anymore...with Bucky only lowering it once Steve tells him to. Steve trusts Tony's being honest and can tell he's being genuine, but that's only because he's spent so much time interacting with Tony, as they built their relationship. While Bucky only trusts Steve, but trusts him a lot because their relationship is so strong & built up, etc. It just felt so natural.)_ And somehow their brief reunion doesn't feel rushed at all, which is incredible considering it happens over 1 minute with only a few lines exchanged between the 2. Basically, the fact you point out - how built up their relationship was - is further accentuated by how little talking is needed to stop them from fighting earlier. The issue has to be so deep in order for them to be unable to talk it out at the end of the day, and Russo Brothers totally pulled it off. Sorry /end ramble. 😅

There was a personal reason. He just missed it thinking the movies had to be the same. The personal conflict is Batman and Superman's personal differences in what Justice is. Batman's brand of justice is corrupt- he's killing people by sending them to prison so they get murdered. It's shown in the scene where Clark opens the letters sent by Luthor of the dead inmate with the question: "JUSTICE?" Justie is what these characters are all about considering the next movie was going to be justice league. Filmento gets it wrong here thinking they had to fight over lois land or something. Also, he says people batman knew should of died to make things personal. I guess he skipped the beginning of the movie where Wayne tower collapsed and batman got pissed when he was sent a picture of the aftermath with the words: "YOU LET YOUR FAMILY DIE" But Filmento doesn't cover that.

@@headshotzbyjcent Thank you for your reply. The DCEU was never trying to be like marvel.... initially. The original idea, was 5 films to build a superman story that would grow the character from dark, to his true form self. BvS was always the sequel. Then Justice league 1,2,3 and then done. It would of got rebooted after. It wasn't until after, the studio started pushing for more movies to be like marvel... which is probably why Affleck wanted out because he was only scheduled for 3 appearances as Batman. Justice does work, if the idea is fighting together from BvS on. Have you seen LA Confidential? Great neo noir movie. In classic sense; two cops hate each othe over their style of obtaining justice. On likes to break a few bones.... the other, by the book. It's not until they relize there are enemies bigger then their squabbling that they unite. My take.

@@fourth1000 I feel ya man. Personally I really would have liked BvS if instead of the lex luther and doomsday we got, the antagonists were lex luther from the animated justice league series and someone like bizarro. That lex just seemed smarter, more powerful, and more manipulative in a way that I can see him getting superman and batman to fight based on their moral beliefs. And I say bring bizarro at the end when supes and batman realize lex luther is a big threat just cuz I think doomsday and the death of superman was just too early. Either way atleast dc seems like they're going in the right direction now. Plus we got the animated movies.
@fourth10005 жыл бұрын
@@headshotzbyjcent jcent james thank you for the reply. Allow me to try to convince you with this. The death of superman came along when it did because it's just when the comic producers thought of doing it. It was only made to be an edgy what if with no meaning/catharsis in mind. It's just, what if we told people superman died and watched the sales come in. In snyders version, there is meaning. Doomsday is the literal personification of what the public fear about superman after the Zod fight. Snyder is great in this way- like tarantino he doesn't tell you what to feel he lets some chips fall where they may. Some critics say snyder thinks destruction of the city is cool and style. I think opposite. If you wished superman was real, this would be the result if you wrote the story not as a propaganda to heroism with good PR for the character but in a real world sense allowing the audience and charcters to discern the events for themselves. The story is more interactive this way. The world fears one man with god like power: socially, politically and religiously. Even batman feels if that power goes bad one day, we will be powerless. Doomsday is the personification of that irrational anger, rage and cataclysmic disaster. But the trinity working together exorcise this demon of sorts. And at the height of the world hating him, superman gives his life for it and the world mourns and batman feels remorse about his corroded valor. And hope is born. LEX LUTHOR: This isn't intended to be classic lex. it's actually whiney lex jr. Lex Luthor is iconic but he gets away with such a bland motivation that when we see it in other films we say "generic evil business man is evil cliché" but why does Traditional lex get a pass? This lex Luthor (who I am not saying is better) fits withing the narrative of God-like power. He is an iconoclast of godlike beings. He wants to prove superman fallible based on his upbringing. Just like how people who are raised religious have bad things happen to them, they say "fuck god." Batman and lex are essentially the same character. They want to destroy superman at the cost of everything. Batman willing to lay down his life after 20 years of fight. To me, lex Luthor willing to spend every last dime to destroy superman funded by a company his father started I think he could care less about. Supermman is his new hobby. That's it. Let me know what you think. I was even going to post, why the Martha scene works and what people overlook when judging it because they only go by the memes that make fun of it.

This all started with the original Michael Keaton Batman. It was always at night, raining, etc. Before that we had 4 Superman movies. They were in the day time, brightly lit, hopeful, etc. Batman was trying to copy Blade Runner, and the DCEU kept that dark theme. Nobody likes it. Also the darker, muted color scheme for hero costumes. Why? One of the few things BvS did right was how they introduced elements of humor into the movie. This was desperately missing from previous efforts. Wonder Woman and Justice League had a few more light-hearted moments but not enough. It wasn't until Shazam that they found a good balance between humor and the deadly seriousness of the threats. Marvel established the right balance of humor way back in the original Iron Man. It just worked. The robot spraying Tony with fire retardant while he was testing the boots, the proof that Tony Stark has a heart, Pepper throwing Tony's date out of the mansion, Jarvis being snarky with the color scheme, and Stane's rant about Tony making an arc reactor in a cave with spare parts. Those were all comedic gold. They worked. Then there was the seriousness. The original attack. Stane's betrayal, next betrayal, and next betrayal. The entirety of the cave scenes. The de-icing problem. The terrorists acquiring Stark Tech. The big reveal when Pepper downloaded Stane's files. Very grim stuff. All life-and-death. But then it also had those "wow" moments, like when Tony first got the suit flying right, that look in his eyes when he was making the Mark 1 in the cave, that same look again when he knew he had to go stop the terrorists, Iron Man blowing up that tank and walking away like a boss, and of course that final "I am Iron Man" moment. In the comics he NEVER would have revealed his secret identity, but they had so carefully crafted his ego that it would be impossible for him to retain a secret identity. This was the "subversion of expectations" done right. It worked. it fit his personality perfectly. All of these formed the core blueprint for other Marvel movies. Newer movies might tweak the formula a bit but they all had their seriousness, their humor (often gallows humor), and their wow moments. And of course the best yet was Infinity War. It had the deadly seriousness of Thanos killing everyone, humor for nearly every character except maybe Wanda. Even the super-stoic Black Panther had that "get this man a shield" moment. But then it also had some of the best wow moments ever as well. Steve Rogers showing up, the awesome intro scene of the Guardians flying through space, Thanos' trickery at Knowhere, Nebula being tortured, Wanda using TK to wipe out those deadly blades, and of course Thor's arrival at Wakanda. All to be topped of with the Snap. Wow, just wow. BvS and Justice League never came close to this tier of complete mastery of comic book adaptation. Oh yeah, darkness. That's right. DCEU is way too dark, visually.

@@atharvadeshpande6907 Read any review on BVS about the Martha scene and you'll find out why. Apparently our Jason here failed to understand the entire plot and took the scene only as an awkward turning point where the sole reason for Batman and superman's reconciliation was their mums
@atharvadeshpande69074 жыл бұрын
@@tomnook9270 Well, you shouldn't need a review to understand a plot. Plus, I have seen the analysis of that scene, which elaborates that it means that Batman realizes that Supes has a mum, so he starts to consider him human. But he could have just said, "You're letting them kill my mum" or something along those lines. However, this still doesn't solve the problems with the plot, the poor characterization of Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, Louis Lane also Superman and Batman. I love Batman, but this movie sucked. Let's us DC fans just admit it, instead of defending its trash and encouraging the studio to not improve its mistakes.
@tomnook92704 жыл бұрын
@@atharvadeshpande6907 The plot was pretty obvious to me first sight and I was actually pretty surprised by the need of those reviews or analysis to understand it. Yes, I agree with you the plot would be clearer and easier to understand if superman said sth like "You're letting them kill my mum" but in the expense of the dramatic effect, plus superman was kryptonited badly at the point so it would be understandable that his brain wasn't functioning straight. So this part would largely be a matter of personal choice. As for the characters, they weren't top-tier again largely due to plot(e.g. people who don't get the Martha scene wouldn't get the senator character either) but I'm rather satisfied with the performances of the MCs. Also I think Jimmy Olsen wasn't even in the movie apart from the CIA agent pretending to be him at the start?

The clip you showed about Zack reasoning Bruce's killing criminals, it is exactly how Bruce thinks. Zack isn't trying to justify why Batman wasn't exactly killing, he is trying to tell us why Batman thinks he is not exactly killing(theres a difference). Batman in this movie is delusional and borderline psychopath, completely driven by rage.
@GenericMedusa993 жыл бұрын
no point explaining to filmento, he doesnt understand anything now hes too bz reading all the praise comments, there is alot of thinking in BVS between actions and feelings that led to batman into becoming this rogue vigilante whom now kills but filmento doesnt understand this, especially in the events of man of steel during the war between aliens according to batman whom cannot see superman as a human. Filmento really has no idea what hes talking about right now

Nah he would have just said that in the interview. He wasn't talking from Bruce's perspective he just realised he fucked up portraying Batman
@icequeen522 жыл бұрын
@@GenericMedusa99 That's extremely inaccurate. The entire point that Filmento is making is that everything you're describing happened off screen, so most audiences couldn't care about it. There is literally 12 movies worth of content before Civil War. Not all of them are focused on Cap or Iron Man, but a lot of them are. To sum up the reason why most audiences didn't like BvS and why most did like Civil War is because Marvel laid foundation, tons of it, before getting to where they were at that point. DC had one movie before that, Man Of Steel, which was a great movie, but that's not enough. BvS needed more foundation, not just more before it, but it needed to show more in the movie itself. Your point is 'There's more story there', and what Filmento, I and others are all saying is 'You're right, so show it to us.' There was some flaws with both movies, the Martha scene was absolutely terrible, but BvS would have worked if they gave us more substance to it

What a good commentary and comparison. I think one of the biggest letdowns with BvS wasn't the villain but the lack of motivation and character growth for both Batman and Superman. The Winter Soldier built very reasonable motivations for the split and led to an inevitable confrontation. BvS had Superman just being himself and Batman angry but without fully fleshed out motivations. Imagine this scenario. Superman laments the destruction and loss of lives from his battle with Zod and begins a downward spiral of self-doubt. The public still praises him as a god-like figure but Superman doesn't feel he is worthy and his doubt causes him to avoid the public. He becomes less and less of a hero and tries to disappear for a while. Batman having seen the loss of thousands of lives in the conflict and also seeing previous captures released back into the public start to doubt whether true justice is being served. Batman could have a small expositional scene with Alfred where he states that he sees no victory in what he has done. Superman caused the loss of thousands of lives but is still perceived as a hero. Criminals just get released again to hurt the innocent. Batman comes to epiphany that he would rather kill the criminals and bear the burden of their blood on his hands than watch the innocent take their place. That is not a burden he can bare. With that insight Batman becomes a true terror which motivates him to rid the world of the criminal element through death and also to show the world that they worship a hypocritical 'god'. The increase in criminal deaths from a vigilante forces a cat and mouse game between Batman and Superman eventually forcing the penultimate battle between the two. After a long fought battle between them (obviously Batman has to use his Kryptonite powered suit) Wonderwoman shows up to to lay the smack down on the two weakened men and to knock some sense into their heads that they are both looking for justice but have lost their way. She has already seen the destruction of power hungry people (from the Wonderwomen movie and Ares) but understands that both are only wanting hope and justice for the innocent. This encounter allows a dialogue between the parties so they can realize that both Batman and Superman have failed and that they should not only use their abilities to help the innocent but also need to be symbols. This provides a weakness for Superman and Batman in that they have both have fallen prey to their darker innate natures and could be better as a team. These are just some character growth ideas that I think would have worked in the movie. I did not want to address the villain as I think BvS could have used another villain instead of Lex Luthor to allow them to work together to defeat them but ultimately showing that Lex Luthor was the mind behind the villain and there there is more to come in the DCEU. So much potential but so much wasted.
