Yeah did you see the second movie in the theater? And the reveal at the end? I remember seeing that in the theater, and hearing the music begin to play and was like "....this sounds familiar...why do I recognize thi......no....NOOOo......no way!!" “Now that we know who you are, I know who I am. I’m not a mistake. It all makes sense. In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain is going to be? He’s the exact opposite of the hero. And sometimes they’re friends like you and me. I should have known way back when. You know why, David? Because of the kids. They called me Mr. Glass.” Some of the greatest dialogue ever written.

One thing that I really like in this movie is how they brought the super hero's cape icon to the more realistic tone. Like, the hero, following the archetype, still wears a cape, but, reallysticaly, it's a raincoat (in portuguese we call it "rain cape", and I believe othe languages also use the word cape in the term).

You guessed the twist mid-movie! :D The first time I saw it I had no idea he was going to be the "destined" villain.. it really broke my heart. But again, that's the whole point, cause a twist like that is EXACTLY what you find in comic books. This is by far, my favorite M Night Shyamalan movie. A lot of people's favorite is The Sixth Sense, which I also think is great but this one is just perfect, imo. The framing, the transitions, the soundtrack, THE FUCKING COLOR SYMBOLISM (David, the hero, wears greens and yellows, Elijah wears purples and blues as the villain, and other villanous people are identified by David wearing reds and oranges) is something I really love about this movie.. everything is just perfect. Also, a little trivia: the scene with the boy where he almost shoots his father was inspired by a real ocurrence in which a boy almost shot the actor of Superman for tv, George Reeves and he had to talk him down from it saying that even though he wouldn't be hurt, " bullets would bounce off of him and injure innocent bystanders." It's crazy to think something like that could actually happen, but there it is! I've seen a lot of people recommending Panic Room which is a really good David Fyncher movie. I would also like to add for your consideration Minority Report which is another hidden gem! Thanks again for another great reaction! n_n

M Night is pretty great, even thought he's had some stinkers, there are a couple of amazing films he's made. I think his first four films are probably his best, Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village. I know those last two (Signs & Village) aren't well liked, but man, there's some great film-making in those. You should watch them, either as a reaction or on your own. I recall at the time reading that as Bruce's character became more aware of who he is, his security poncho was made larger to subtly represent his growth as a super hero. It was good to watch the whole film again, 25 years later, without the "baggage" of The Sixth Sense weighing so heavily on it. That really impacted watching this one a lot back then. Now, I can see it really stands on its own very well. Thanks.

So many of my friends couldn't care less about that side of film making and it makes it really hard to talk about movies with them because they only pay attention to the plot and nothing else. So much of the film making process is about what is inferred subconsciously with the composition and if you pay attention to it you get so much more out of the experience.

I wasn't in HS when it came out but by the time I was a junior or senior all the Spiderman and X-Men movies and everything started flooding the box office so we had an assignment to write about our favorite superhero movie. I wrote about this. When Shyamalan is on his game it's incredible. You mentioned how he worked around foreground objects later in the video but I think my favorite shot in the whole movie is at the hospital with the last survivor other than Willis starting to bleed out, through a gauze wrap, in the foreground of Willis' character having a conversation with a doctor. Has always stuck with me.

I think my favorite thing about this movie is the way it uses traditional comic book language to foreshadow who the central characters are revealed to be: David Dunn has an alliterative name, like Peter Parker, Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, Clark Kent, and many other secret identities, and he's usually dressed in primary colors, emphasizing the broadness of his shoulders and the symmetry of his features. Elijah Price, meanwhile, has a dramatic name straight out of a Victorian novel, and wears a long black coat throughout the film, beginning with a cane and transitioning to a wheelchair, all while wearing black gloves, speaking softly, and sporting an asymmetrical haircut, all classic villainous signifiers.

Expecting a perfect product every time discourages so many truly talented artists. I will never forget a piece of advice from a mentor: "To create and evolve, you have to make a lot of bad and mediocre art." We should be more accepting of a collection of work including masterpieces and failures -- it's human to produce wonderful, bad, middling and everything in between as an artist -- and that grace isn't given often when looking at people involved in films especially. One ineffective film can overshadow truly genius work in a catalogue and it's a loss; I wish our judgments were not so black and white in the current culture.

Thank you for this reaction. It's one of my top five films. This is the best reaction/review of it since Tarantino gave his appreciation of it. There's also the sadness in the beginning of the film being shown in blue and grey hues, and there is more color at the end as they both find their purpose, even when it meant letting in brighter things like the killer, (called the Orange Man in the music score).I love too how before going to the subway to test his powers, Isaiah tells him this part won't be like the comics. Love the tying in of comics as the extensions of Greek myths to sort of explain these unique individuals in earlier times. Plus yes, the music is sooo good. Your notice of the comic panel angles of shots I had never noticed or thought of. It was nice to revisit this with someone who also appreciated it. Thanks again!

One of my favorite Shymalan movies with two of my favorite actors. That football field you said you recognized reminded me of the old Franklin Field. Shymalan showing up in his movies was an old Hitchcock thing. Thanks for the reaction.😄👍😄

In the mid 80's in Los Angeles I was listening to an interview with Brandon Lee on a rock station. He said, he and Chuck Norris' son, I forget which one, where sitting at the end of the Santa Monica pier, when they were like 10-11 years old. They were arguing, "My dad can beat up your dad!" "N'uh uh, my dad would beat up your dad." It was pretty funny, the way he described it.

There is a video online with Tarantino saying "it is a brilliant retelling of the superman mythology summing it up: what if superman was here on Earth and he did not know he is superman" always loved that quote.

James VS Cinema yes it is, he also says they failed at marketing the movie and they should have used the headline of “what if superman was here on earth and he did not know he was superman” he calls him Shamalamadingdong. Brilliant! I think this in one of his older Tarantino’s top 10 movies interviews

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Unbreakable is the first half hour of a superhero movie, the origin story, stretched out to a full movie. That's not a revelation or anything, it's obvious, I just have to say it because it does it so well. And you like Elijah and sympathize with him, his mom's so proud of him... it makes the end hit that much harder. Also, I must say, he's really rocking his supervillain outfit in that last scene.

One thing you may not have noticed on first viewing, and is worth going back for, is the colors and lighting. There's a very deliberate split between the color schemes for the hero and villain and their shots. It gives the strong feeling of a comic book where a limited pallet might be used to save on printing. Very cool to see when green and when purple are dominant.

Thanks for this excellent review! I have just subscribed, after stumbling upon your review of Split, and I’ll watch that now. Have you reviewed Glass? I’ll look for that review, but I had to write immediately because I’m very excited to find your channel. You are succinct, articulate and the fact that you have a filmmaking background adds to the review. It’s great to have yet another aspect, pun intended, of how we may see these films. (My daughter is an assistant camera operator for films, music videos, tv, etc., in Vancouver, so I can sort of understand your particular appreciation of the methodology). As far as the sons character not being illustrated to the extent I would like, I’m guessing that if there was more, it may have been edited due to time constraints, and being a parent myself, I can tell you that if you ever have kids, they’re probably going to do a lot of crazy stuff that you would never been able anticipate. Also, it was fun seeing you enjoy the location shots like that.

What is it called where the (usually) kid knows something they think nobody will believe, and finally someone does believe them? There must be a name for it. That is what I liked best about this movie and the 6th Sense. I think this is where his movies took a wrong turn, "Do twists! Your twists are great! People love them!", but the real secret sauce was the catharsis that come from these kid-secret-believed-by-trusted-adult things he set up. You do that and THEN hit them with the twist when their guard is down so the movie feels satisfying even if the twist was cut out.

One of my favorite "realistic" super hero movies and I always enjoyed The Village even after the big plot reveal was well known. They technically did come out with more of these movies again a few years ago (Split & Glass). I haven't seen Glass yet. That drowning scene with the pool cover sinking into the pool and the, I imagine a stunt double, lol, wearing the poncho, gives me such claustrophobia to this day. As an MMA fan, Bruces choke hold on the murderer was really friggin weak lmao, but still such a cool angle in the ceiling corner of the room. Was it one take starting from the floor and ending on the ceiling? Fun side note, the son is in Gladiator and later on in life he played the son in The Last House on the Left (of the bad guys).

Love this movie. Not sure if you caught it, but what was David's fear? Water. What was his superhero outfit? Yep, a waterproof cloak. I loved that. Its those little things that just won me over with the movie and of course the writer/director. This movie really taught me how to enjoy the little things. Which in this movie the little things were the biggest things. Loved your reaction as well. Always enjoy watching filmmakers watch the underappreciated films. It's like watching them tell their version of a story, which isn't that what filmmaking is all about? Just found your channel. Instant subscribe!
