I had a mouthy, bawdy female friend and my mom said she could come to dinner if she didn't drink too much. She said it wouldn't be a problem.... She'd just keep a bottle out in her car and step out once in a while. Then that's what she did. Total embarrassment.

Marty Ingles just barges into Rob and Laura's house and promptly begins to root around. The writers set up his character, Sol Pomeroy, as being somewhat loud and uncouth from the beginning. In supposed contrast to the classy Bermonts.

Originally telecast on April 11, 1962. Marty Ingels might have made more appearances as "Sol", but he made the mistake of presenting a hot dog wagon- with all the trimmings- to the cast and crew after the episode was filmed. This caused Carl Reiner to cast a suspicious and jaundiced eye on Marty..........and the result was that Ingels was never asked to return.

What is wrong with gifting a hot dog cart? It seems like a kind and generous gesture to me. Not sure why Carl Reiner would be so offended. Did he think that Marty stole the hot dog cart? What did I miss?
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 5 ай бұрын
Well, it really wasn't a "hot dog wagon". According to Marty, in his joint autobiography with Shirley Jones: "I wanted so much for the people {involved with Dick Van Dyke's show} to like me that I wanted to do something special for them. I went to a cabinetmaker and I had him custom make a coffee wagon, with an electric grill in the center and hooks all around the sides.I had the names of everyone in the cast inscribed on cups and hung them on the hooks. Then I covered it with wrapping paper and wheeled it onto the set on the last day of my little stint, my twenty-two lines, and I gave them this hand-crafted coffee wagon. They all said, 'Oh, isn't that nice,' and I was not smart enough then to pick up the undercurrent of 'What the fuck is this kid doing this for? What does he want from us?' "It was so spontaneous and so harmless that I would believe for a dozen years, mistakenly, that I had done something nice." As a result, he got no further calls from Carl Reiner, Sheldon Leonard or Danny Thomas....and just about everyone else in the industry. A while later, Marty got a new agent {Roy Silver}, who finally told him *why* he wasn't getting any callbacks.......... 'Well, they thought it was weird, and they don't want you." "I said, 'Roy, wait a minute. I gave them a gift. Explain it to me. What was so wrong?' "And, of course, he gets right to the heart of it. 'All they saw was this ambitious young *putz* from New York. He gets a few lines, and here he comes with a gift for people he barely knows, and it is way out of proportion. They can't figure it out, and it makes people nervous.' "I said, 'Why, Roy? Why does this backfire on me? Whu should it keep me from working? I know communists and child molesters who are working all over town. I give somebody a bunch of coffee cups, and I'm blacklisted. How do they expalin that?'" Eventually, Marty got to see Jerry Lewis, who gave him a part in "The Ladies' Man" [which was finally left on the cutting room floor], and slowly began to reestablish himself.

@jb6712
@jb6712 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the idiot script writers made enormous mistakes in every episode; they constantly made "Rob" a coward and a liar, "Laura" a whiner-screamer-cryer, and the kid a shrieker the majority of the time. Add to that all the lies that were scripted in, as well as cheating (not marital, but in business and other areas). It wasn't as clean and wholesome a show as people foolishly believe it to be.

@@jb6712 And the Andy Griffith show was full of crime, alcoholism and domestic violence. You can turn all of these into horror shows with your mindset. What a boring world you’d love to live in right commissar of political correctness? This is a comedy but people like you have no sense of humour.

TV with courage family value with humour of yesterday oh yes,! It was the the reality of the the human Spirit at the time:-) I do wish... would somehow be able to turn back the top clock in time get back to the nature true Family Values the way father God had intended! :-)!:-)! We're family values where they were brought up socially as well as privately and this is definitely proven in making of programs.., wow it's sad that television has dropped in humour in the family value mark! Parents have to hide in bedroom to watch TV behind locked doors when the family used to sit together watch a show because it was clean with world not with slapstick that could not be shared a child in the room or a grandmother or grandfather enjoyed good humour grandchild how we have fallen it's a good thing we have older shows on KZbin still publicly showing Family Values and the humour is incredibly powerful
