If the MCU switches its focus to pleasing the mature audience, it's going to definitely attract an even larger audience. The younger audience will always find a way to watch the mature movies either way.

PG-13 has a LOT of leeway, to the point that some movies that are PG-13 in technicality more than deserve an R Rating. Of course, there are a handful of R films that got their status for arbitrary political reasons, so it goes both ways.

Given the technology that we have, there can also be a ratings based streaming system. So, for example, you could have different cuts of the same movie where things too mature are not shown or alternate scenes are there to take their place. It would be like an age-restricted choose your own adventure. The start and end are the same, but the middle is where things shift in one direction or another.

Fairly enough there were kids who've been with the MCU since Iron man and now are already grown up (that includes me, I was in the 1st grade when Iron Man came out). Not to mention there have already been older audiences since way back waiting for the more mature content, so it just serves right that they'd expand this way at this point in time of the MCU. And really, if they made mature content. the kids that weren't allowed to see it in theaters will also grow up eventually. (but who are we kidding most of us watched some 18+ things by the age of 10)

This is the same rule of content they do with nostalgia. As people age up, the content is rereleased to the masses. The memory is unclear, but you don't remember it being bad. These shows will be seen out of at the very least a bit of curiosity. _Let's just hope the content is quality, as many times it's to hold rights to an IP or a plain old cash grab that kills the IP._

Going rated R has its disadvantages though. It always gets treated as “moar better movies” but it affects longevity of the material. People get tired of the escalation and no-holds-barred nature of it after a short period of time.
@na3rial2 жыл бұрын
I agree, but that's what happens when you use it fast and loose to just "spice things up" for the sake of drama and base entertainment. Marvel has been (mostly) very good about using action sequences to build up characters or relationships, showing newfound teamwork, or clumsiness, or how off the cuff some heroes fight.

You guys can keep watching pg-13 movies
@cliffritch73042 жыл бұрын
It depends on the reason for the r rating. If it is just rated r to make a no holds barred movie, and that's all that's going on, sure. But the world is messy. Making many movies that are only showing the innocent side of the world (at least to the PG-13 level of innocent) misses out on a lot of potential stories. They don't have to be escalating just because it's rated r. It may just open up a larger set of stories that feel real. 2 wildly different examples: 1) suppose you're making a movie about a large war. Showing the horrors that the innocent people went through might raise a movie's rating to r. But that makes it feel more real, and the stakes are more grounded, not just some abstract thing that you know is happening off screen. 2) in a romance story, pg-13 might imply a physical relationship, but it wouldn't really show anything like that. But the reality is that most adult relationships have a physical component. So including it occasionally might make the love more believable. That isn't to say only things that are rated r are good. Far from it. But that rating doesn't have to limit a story to fit into any particular box

There was a brief mention of the Spider-Man drugs comic here, but the full thing is a really funny story: Stan Lee was told he couldn't release the story by the Comics Code Authority, but then realised a loophole in the system: he just released it anyway, without the CCA logo on the covers, because there was nothing in the rules that said he couldn't do that, and then went back to it after the story was done. First time I realized that I love Marvel’s darker side was when I watched the Legion series. And now with Moon Knight I’m seeing a lot of similarities. Again though, Moon Knight can only do so much of that type of psychological horror without getting an M rating. Which ofc saddens me, bc I’d really like to see what Moon Lnight could’ve been with the same boundaries Legion had. To anyone who hasn’t seen it, I’d highly recommend it. Season 1 is amazing, season 2 is great too but gets a little iffy, and then towards the end it’s just a little too much. But I still definitely recommend.
@setheaves96082 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, the similarities between Moon Knight show and Legion show are accidental. Theory: Matilda was in a symbiotic relationship with the ghost of magnus, Ms. Honey's father. This is mostly based off the movie, book, and Broadway show. In the show, we see her have conversations with this ghost, but we will get to that later. First, let's go through Magnus' orgin story: he was an escapilogist who's wife was murdered by Trunchbull. Later on, he was murdered by Trunchbull. If he was a ghost, what would his "unfinished buisness" be? Get revenge, help his daughter, and get another chance to be a father figure. This is exactly what we see at the end of the movie. Once again, we see magnus' actions throughout the show. He was the one moving objects and reading minds. The Broadway show adds a new power to Matilda's power set: reading minds... maybe. She is able to tell the story of Magnus with extreme detail without even knowing. This could be because Magnus was telling her, she just wasn't realizing it. But hey, that's just a theory. A film theory. Also, check out the M.I.A files. It's an obscure ARG with lore more complicated than fnaf.

what you neglect to mention is that the "comics code" seal was a COMPLETELY VOLUNTARY thing, you had to submit the comic to them and if they approved it you got the stamp, but it was 100% voluntary, you didnt have to submit it, there were no laws forcing comics to get rated, there still arent. funnily enough its the same for movies, but NOT tv shows, tv shows are required by law to be rated, but the MPAA movie rating system is a completely voluntary process. in the united states only things that get "freely broadcast over the air" have to be rated, and censored to comply with FCC regulations, that means radio, and tv, but nothing else. Also the comics code authority still exists today. Though NO ONE has submitted a comic to them since 2011, when both archie and DC comics finally stopped cowtowing.
