Not to be a broken record but Final Fantasy tactics is the best game you will ever play. I'm pretty sure its right up your alley with the kinds of games you like. It's masterclass in storytelling, amazing music, you already know the combat is addicting. Also the music.. Also the STORY. OH THE MUSIC!!!! This might be long winded but I wanted to answer your question for version play preference in detail. As for which version there's two takes: "The Lion War" is considered the most polished version which came on the PSP or you can emulate it. It has some extra rendered cutscenes in the page book style art along with voice acting. It's a nice touch but honestly there's part of me that enjoys leaving the voices to my own imagination and playing the game without the cutscenes. Which leaves... The original PS2 version. no voice acted or art drawn cutscenes. There's another BIG thing between the versions and that is the dialogue. The original PS2 version the characters speak more plainly with standard style speaking however there are numerous localization typos and misspellings etc. Not enough to break the game immersion imo honestly, but they're there. I started with this and still enjoy it. The Lion War PSP version the characters speak a more embroidered flourished and eloquent speech, something you'd see almost Elizabethean play akin to Shakespeare without being shakespearean (saying words like "mayhaps" instead of "maybe" or "perhaps"). At first it was a tad off putting the heavy flowery speech can be laid on thick sometimes but I got used to it pretty quick and now I really really actually kind of like it. There's never a moment I don't understand what they're saying (Nary a moment do the words spoken evade my understanding's grasp.

I would love to see Final Fantasy 7 remade. I know there are a lot of people who will say "they are literally remaking it. We have 2 of the 3 games of the remake already." Except Remake and Rebirth are not remakes of the original game. Sure, it loosely follows a general overview of the story, but it is a VERY different experience between these games. Especially when you consider that the events of the original game are still canon to the events of Remake/Rebirth. Its more of a time travel/multiverse sequel than an actual remake.

i would really love a FF8 remake since its my favorite FF of all time. i even main the Gunbreaker job in 14 since its based of squall... but after all these years i gotta say, that 8 has not the best executed story. A big part is the love story (hell its even the cover how squall hugs rhinoa) i would love to see more Laguna, more side character storys, a better developed love story a more threatening ultimicia over the entire game. They already have the perfect foundation for this in the 7 Remake, everything they do over there i would love to see in a 8 remake.

I would love FF-XI to be remade into an HD single player story. Would be a dream of mine! Eventually the servers will go offline and they will need a solution to this somehow to avoid locking out a mainline number entry in the series.

I doubt it will happen looking at Rebirth sales. In the end this whole FF7 remake project doesn't seem to be going the way Square wanted it to. Do you think they're going to do the same with FF8 when it's a much less popular game than 7?

How about an action rpg retelling of ff12 from either balthier, ashe, or basch's perspective? Or even a continuation? The cast (aside from Penelo and Vaan) was so colorful with a very different take on the classic rpg party. Since anyone could fill any roll in that game, they put a lot of effort into the unique personalities of the characters and I think it shows.

That'd be awesome to flesh out the combat to be similar to 7R and have dodge/block mechanics, but otherwise keep most other things like the gambit and job board systems in place (if not expand on them). However, having just played through Zodiac age...the game still holds up so damn well by even modern standards that I feel the development effort and resources would be better spent on a re-envisioning of a 90s title.

If they are gonna remake FFVIII, they should do it from the perspective of Quistis. She was by far the best character in the game and easily the most qualified to lead the party. She should have been the female lead character that Lightning never quite was.

Personally, what I want the most is a single player, offline version of Final Fantasy XI. It had such a well fleshed out world and so many amazing story lines. I'd love to be able to replay it anytime I want without having to engage in the all of the MMO aspects. Definitely agree with all of your picks. Mentioning FFV at the end, I'd love to see it redone in the same 3D visual style as the Trials of Mana remake actually. I feel like V is lends itself well to a more "cartoony" aesthetic. Seeing all of the different Job outfits in that level of detail would be amazing. And as for FFIV, it drives me bonkers they have so many cool assets from Endwalker they can just throw into a remake. I want it so bad!

Going through the picks, and my own thoughts 1: yeah I would love FF Tactics to get a Remake, I know there’s the rumoured Remaster, and if it does happen (which likely will especially based on the leak, as well Tactics Ogre Reborn it’s grandpa, which did come) that would be awesome. I don’t mind if it’s HD-2D like TS or in the style of TOR. I know Matsuno kinda denied about it, tho there are spots where it’s just PR talk, hope it gets announced soon 2: Weirdly enough after hearing that a rumoured FF9 Remake from that same leak. I actually want it, even tho I do love the OG FF9 so damn much. And I think it’d be the FF game that people might deserve. Like having full voice acting, having graphics that’s stylised like the OG but upgraded on par with FF9 Memoria project, Visions of Mana, DQXI, WOFF and KH3 as well as keeping the ATB Turn based system but adding some improvements to it, and general QOL features and additions like fleshing out characters eg. Freya and Amarant. And there’s also that FF9 Cartoon in the works and thinking if those two could be connected and announced sometime now that FF7 Rebirth is out. 3. FF4, I wouldn’t mind that. I know the 3D Remake exists even if well looking at it now, it’s showed it’s age. Either HD-2D or improved 3D that’s sort of like FF16, or on par with FF7R visuals I wouldn’t mind. 4. FF6. While I enjoyed the Pixel Remaster, I wouldn’t be opposed to it having a Remake. Tho it would have to be HD-2D like Octopath, Live A Live and upcoming DQ3. As I don’t think having FF7R level scale would make it work as well as supposedly taking 20 years and the charm of it like Sabin and Edgar’s shock that Terra can use Magic or even Gau’s appearance, it would be hard to imagine portrayed in 3D Modern semi-realistic graphics 5. FF8, definitely deserves it and to be on FF7R levels, in graphics, battle system which can work and as well as fleshing both the characters, story and improving the controversial Junction System

I grew up on Final Fantasy, and honestly, Tactics is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Mechanically it’s just so fun, and the story is unique in how it deals with what constitutes a hero publicly vs personally. Being careful not to reveal spoilers, there’s a definite dichotomy between Ramza and Delita, their stories, and how the public eye of history will see them compared to what they actually did and who they actually were. And again, trying to be careful here, but it’s a satisfying “subversion” of classical tropes that I’d love to talk about in more detail should you ever get around to playing it! Much like Game of Thrones (or honestly before GOT) the game takes major inspiration from the War of the Roses, the arbitrary nature of class distinction, role, and how power is distributed (and the injustice sewed into society as a result), and the influence of religious institutions that have been hijacked for political gain. The music is incredible, and for sprites, the characters are amazing. It’s top tier. Honestly may be one of the best made, which is saying ALOT. Especially from me, a diehard fan of 7, 9, and 10!

When we get remakes, here are my issues: Firstly, higher graphical fidelity means defining what was undefined before. Locke to my minds eye might not look the way he does to you. It might not even be a conscious look, it might be it's just something you know it isn't when you see it. "That feels wrong". Voices: the same thing here. The UE5 fan remake of FF IX looks absolutely amazing, seemingly preserving the style and feel. But when watching the demo video where we see Vivi walk around town, and Vivi spoke, it immediately went "oh, no, that's not right". To me it's sort of like reading a book and then seeing an adaptation. It can't match your undefined interpretations 1:1. To me, there are solutions: Firstly, I can get cover myself and let people make whatever they want and I can just bugger off. Which is fine. Or, they can remake the games without fleshing out the visuals too much. Thibk FF VI redone in the style of Octopath Traveller. While also giving an option to turn off character voice overs. Ideally in sections, so you can turn off Main Characters and/or other NPCs. Though I suppose a distinction might be problematic. Like Kuja surely is a main character, but would Zorn and Thorn be? What about regent Cid? What about the black mages then? It's sort of hard to draw a line I suppose. But honestly I just want them to make new stories with a turn based system, instead of rehashing old stuff over and over again.

Itching to hear more about the FFIX Remake! It's my all time favourite game so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it. As for FFVI, I agree with you. An HD-2D style will suit the game much better because there are so many characters, and they should still be able to fit it all in one game. Squenix has said it would take 20 years for them to remake it like they have FFVII

FFVIII needs a remake more than any other, specifically because it was rushed, limited, a lot of content had to be cut, and they probably didn't have time to fully test and refine the battle system to balance it better. My concern is that FFVIII serves as the antithesis to most of Nomura's writing habits. He LOVES his "fight your fate" stories. But FFVIII is the exact opposite of that. Squall is on a journey where he has to learn to accept his fate (and learn to embrace the help of others). At the end of the game, Edea learns that Squall is the one who will take down Ultimecia. She certainly conveys this information to Cid, and he pretty much makes it his mission to train Squall (and others) to take down Ultimecia. Squall being appointed the leader of SeeD after only being one for maybe a month is absurd unless you bear in mind that Cid knew it was Squall's fate to defeat the sorceress. Squall has a hard time accepting this role and is resentful of it at first. Ultimecia though, is the one trying to fight her fate. She's the one trying to compress time, knowing that she will be defeated by SeeD, in order to create a timeline where this doesn't happen. She's trying to avoid her fate, while Squall needs to accept his.

they actually nailed the combat in ff remake and rebirth, make that the norm for final fantasy games and tweak it each time a new game is released. That party system in remake and rebirth is so great, it's still like turn based because of the spells you can choose and actions and mixing it with action gameplay damn it's perfect

I would LOVE a big FFVIII Remake project (or even single game). VIII is my favorite Final Fantasy game, but I've sadly never beat it... I played it on PC back in the day and lost my progress when my hard drive crashed. I never had the heart to follow through and play the game through since, even all these years later.

Just food for thought Erek, if you play Tactics on the PS1, you can do the job master glitch and master pretty much all your jobs at the beginning of the game. They took that glitch out in the psp version.

Final Fantasy 4 does not let u rejoin any of the killed off characters, when they are turns out not dead anyway, so they should let them instead really die as no more of the game would be missing and more impactful. Yang dicing off the ship to his death and palom parom was huge at the time but then we got robed when they all came back

To each their own, but when they announce an FF9 remake if its anything other than super old school, people are going to be real pissed. Being nostalgic was built into the core of that game and turn based is the way to do it for that particular entry.

I would like 6 to be expanded on. Flesh out the characters more. Add areas and challenges. Put in more espers. But don’t remake it. The story is phenomenal. But it would be cool if you could keep Kefka, by way of a secret method, from destroying the world. It could be two games in one. The original story and one where Kefka is stopped from destroying the world but escapes and starts a war.

in an ff8 remake situation they could still keep some of that junction idea but make it so that when you get magic you learn that spell and can then junction said learnt spell and keep the insane amount of variations in builds as was in the og, you could then use the spells in combat without any fear of losing power for doing so

My number one pick for a game that needs a remake, though not necessarily what my most wanted one is, would be Final Fantasy 2. I feel like it has so many parts that could be great if they revisited it, plus since people aren't that fond of it we won't have to worry about angry fanboys getting upset at the smallest change.

The 5 Id like to see is: FFT: How can you not do Tactics? Just a great game. Make better gameplay, extra Jobs, perhaps combine the story of the series instead of just one. Final Fantasy 4: I know its the same as yours so far, Eric, but 4 is just incredible and too iconic. While 7 may be the popular FF, 4 feels like when Final Fantasy BECAME Final Fantasy. Its a huge world, very mystical, and could do a LOT with a remake. Final Fantasy 8: A lot of potential, wasted. Thats a good way to summerized ff8. It has a good story told in a confusing manner, some good ideas held back by the whole Junction System being easily broken. But fix up the pacing and junction system. An example: let magic affect stats to a lesser degree, but as a trade off it no longer lowers with stacks. So lets say once you get a certain amount of fights with a said magic in a stat, you "Learn" it and its there. And i wouldnt be against Stock becoming more of a learnjng system and bringing MP back. But I digress. Final Fantasy 11: A great story locked behind an MMO that most people do NOT get to experience. One day, the servers will shut down. So why not immortalize the story, make a Single Plaher version so when the servers do shut down, we can keep its rich history and lore? Also, why not ff14 is because they are making steps to make it single player friendly. So when the servers do shutdown, they may be able to make changes to make it accessible as a single player already. So there is less fear of losing that story at this time. Final Fantasy 6: This could benefit from a remake more than 7. Giant world, deep lore, and multiple stories going on at once means you can make this story orchestra even more epic in the modern day. Not to mention the second major act of the game would probably surprise new players and welcome fans of darker themes to the franchise

Very very unlikely and something that would be a ways off...but would love to see them give the 3rd person shooter thing another go with a Dirge of Cerberus remake- Vincent deserves better. My mind is conjuring up something that would blend the Arpg elements of the remake trilogy, with immersive sim/stealth shooter options like MGSV or even Square's published Deus Ex games. Just feels like it would fit his character well.

Out of all these - I think I would like to see FFVI remade the most. Give it the full-on FFVII remake treatment. Make it happen Square-Enix. It would definitely sell. But please can we dispense with the silly Playstation exclusivity nonsense? FFVII rebirth sales I'm sure will improve once it's out on PC.

I would love to have remakes of these Final Fantasys and I more or less have the same choices as on here. But I would like them to be handled better than how they've been handling FF7R which I have mixed feelings on. The stuff they have fleshed out and gameplay is fantastic but the changes to the story involving the whispers and multiverse/timeline stuff is incredibly unnecessary and muddies what was originally a brilliant story. Which is a shame cause very few new players will go back to experience the original.

still somewhat sad the 11 remake was cancelled (even if they were gonna make it mobile gatcha game) just bc of the big vast story of it and game preservation bc eventually 11 will have to shut and there wont be an official way to play its already EN servers only and they shut down the console versions and the steam version is botched 11 really needs a remake too not only bc its dying and theres no ways for a lot of people to play it but bc it was announced at the same event as 9, its a pre WoW MMO and has some holdovers from its time like limited charicter customisation yes 11 does count and no you arent any less of a fan for not playing it but its a numbered title for a reason, just like 14 and deserves its due respect

Also, personally I would prefer any further remakes to keep the ATB combat system, I think the classic style combat is superior to the full action style remake.. It has been interesting seeing the new style of combat in FF15, 16 and 7 remake, but ultimately I honestly think it was a step in the wrong direction for the series.

I also would like Shadow's story to be fleshed out on not only his thief friend, but also turns out to be Kefka's true identity all along in the Octopath remaster of VI before he was experimented. It's based from a fan theory in the FFVI community and I think it'll be very nice for Kefka's motives driven by his lost of sanity during the experiment.

While i would love a remake of most older FF but i simply do not trust team business division 1 to not mess up these games. Nomura, Nojima, hamaguchi and Kitase have massive egos and they are terrible at telling stories. For me i would want 2 if them. Final Fantasy X to get the 7 remake treatment. It's long one of the most successful and to this day there is no good way to play it. The Ps2 version is outdated. And the Ps4 and PC versions have terrible character animation and the PC is prone to crashing. It would be lovely to traverse Spira with a modern twist. There was a rmour going around that FFX-3 will be the focus after 7 and i feel that that is unnecessary as everything atmfter X-2 ruins the narrative. The next is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I grew up with this one and it plays similarly to Tactics. I genuinely hope that it gets the work that it deserves. Preferably just new graphics and a better law system and I would love a narrative that explains why certain races cannot do certain jobs. Coule be a nice allegory to tackle racism which Tactics advance could handle as it takes mature topics and lets kids handle it from their perspective.

Unpopular opinion but I don't think ff6 needs to be remade for me its the pinnacle of the old school final fantasy games. I think 7 was different because you could see the ambition and scope was limited to the technology at the time. Of all the final fantasy games I think 2 is the one that deserves the remake treatment to be redeemed as a game I think its a brilliant game in there beneath the clunky battle system.

I disagree with making other remakes. Final Fantasy 7 should be the exception, not the rule. Making remakes of existing games is lazy. It is exactly like Disney releasing all their previous movies with "real" characters. I want new stories, new game plays. Although it's a small sample size the final fantasy subreddit did a ranking with 2.5k votes 4 months ago. Presumably the people voting are pretty familiar with the franchise. In this poll FF 6 was ranked 5th best and BEATEN by Final Fantasy 8. Furthermore, a poll done by rpgfan 6 years ago with 10,000 votes had VI pulling in 3rd; an impressive placing to be sure. However these data sets seem to refute your statement. Sadly lot of people in this thread making definitive statements based on personal feelings. How does this help the conversation?

Most ranking I see FF6 is usually in top 3 and by the way that subreddit graph, I peeped at it and it's not hard to tell that those voters are more likely players during the Playstation era, simply just by looking at order of the games. In reality most FF fan even most OGs today didn't get into FF until FF7 or after. Usually ranges somewhere FF7-FF10. Where are the OGs at that goes back to the Nintendo days before the blow up of FF7? FF1-6 never got to live in the same limelight as their successors. If FF6 was to replace FF7 back in 1997, FF6 would be the GOAT today. It didn't though, but to see 6 usually in the top 3 speaks volume, bc nobody really cared for 1-6 until its re-release. If you know anything about FF most(including myself) would agree that FF7 is the GOAT, but if we are being honest with ourselves, FF10 is a far better game than FF7. And if we were to lay all the series and judge the game on equal terms during its time. FF6 would take the cake. I've always believed FF6 is the unsung hero of the franchise, FF7 is the GOAT, and FF8 is the most underrated. People saying 8 is better 6 is just as crazy as this other guys trying to tell me 13 is better than 8.

First of all, FF4 already has a remake on the DS. It doesn't need another one. If anything, they could just remaster that one and put it out on other platforms. Give remakes to games that don't have them yet. If FF4 were to get another remake before something like FF6, which doesn't have one, I'm going to fucking lose it. Secondly, please for the love of god stop it with the HD-2D thing for FF6! It's TOO CLOSE TO THE PIXEL REMASTER! It would be wasted potential. Not to mention it would make the pixel remaster obsolete. I can pretty much guarantee there is no way Square would do this. If they wanted to remake FF6 in this style, they would have done it instead of the pixel remaster. And to suggest FF4 should get a high quality remake with a visual style like FF16, but not FF6 is one of the most WTF things I've seen recently. Fucking ridiculous bullshit!

FFT is amazing. The PSP version is better....and worse. So I recommend the PSP version but you have to find the patch that stops the slow down. They basically were super lazy when they made it and the audio lags behind the visuals but can be fixed with the patch. The only other part that's "bad" about the PSP remake is that they speak in older english than the PSX version which might turn you off. Other than that the PSP version is superior. Final Fantasy 9 is the best final fantasy ever made. I would take a remaster/remake. I should probably play with that mod on my Steam Deck. You and your action combat...turn based all the way baby! I agree with you on Final Fantasy 4. It's definitely a smaller game than those that came after it. I feel like they could give it a good remake for modern consoles. I agree that Yang, Palom/Porom, Cid, should all have died. Those sacrifices were so impactful. Then at the end they're all alive which cheapened their sacrifices. Final Fantasy 6 needs the Octopath treatment. I think it would fit perfectly with it. Octopath always reminded me of FF4 and FF6 in style with the small characters and huge bosses. Disagree with Final Fantasy 8 since I consider it the worst game in the series after FF2. Maybe if they completely re-did the characters, story, and magic system.

Final Fantasy 8 is a bad game. If they totally reid the junction system somehow that would be necessary. Either abuse the junction then the game is broken easy, or purposefully don't abos it and u r just making it harder and more grindy for no reason. SUmons take way too ong to sumon too, an option to see the full awesome summon, totggle to show a quick summary sumon, further option to turn off the summon animation. All options. Ot can be set per summon individual preference and remembers for each one.

Since FF7R i always felt like the combat in that game fits perfectly with the FF8 world. I’m with you that FF8 is a bad game but if they remade it like 7 with the same combat, it would better than 7R. Just my opinion though.

FF8 would benefit from having spell charges and levels the way FF1 did, then you acquire spells the way you did in FFXII, then you just draw charges and leveling increases your spell levels and charges allowing you to junction more as you level, then make the spells powerful so there's a risk reward strategy factor, do I cast meteor and drop my stats for a couple atb gauges to gain an advatage or do I play conservatively?

I think 7Rs combat would fit with 8, but that’s probably about it. I like the system, especially for future games, but it wouldn’t feel right with, say 6 or 9. I can’t see an 8 remake happening though. Even amongst the FF community that’s one of the more divisive entries and it probably doesn’t have the sales potential that others have.

The real answer is that we need both. New games every couple of years to keep expanding on the gameplay potentiality and continue the series’ growth while some old games get some touch-ups and/or a complete remake. That way they could bring back turn-based for those who like it or just for nostalgic purposes. It should be like what the Pokémon games attempt to accomplish, but with just enough years in between them to actually come out polished.

Ff6, ff7, and ff8 are my favorites as far as characters go. I liked 4 and 10 well enough, wished i could've gotten into 14 RIP Thancred Waters, my boy, 15 was cool on paper, 16 was okay.
