Fun fact: Even though OnionKids are the weakest and worst class in the game, and cant use magic, if you somehow manage to level them to the late 90's they actually become the most powerful and best class in the game. And they are also the only class in the game that can equip the overpowered Onion equipment, that you get from Dragons in the final dungeon. There are OnionKid only challenges where you get your ass handed to you the whole game, but at the end get rewarded by becoming ultra powerful.

@@wilfredynunez5263 Actually, in the later versions the Onion Knight can use magic but can only be acquired after a side quest.

The biggest sucky part is how some of the ports handle how you get the class. While I in general love the 3D recreation of 3+4, their attempts to integrate with the online elements were kinda meh, and the letter system they did for 3 which locked out the onion knight this way is even worse than Rydia's imaginary friend.

personally, i like when each character has a set role, it's why i like ff1/ff4/ffx (though in x, you can break it if you choose) the best because throughout the game, each character has a set role, rather then master of all. I love FFt and jobs with a good job class system as well, when it's balanced, but it's rarely balanced and often leads to the game easily being broken without trying, and while i like these games, they're still beneath the set job role games.
@Skallva7 жыл бұрын
I don't I'd rather have a character that actually reacts and has a personality I can relate to than some model that drives the plot forward and is somehow considered the chosen one/the champion/whatever title they have and the world completely resolves around their actions. It's not even fair to call them characters, because they... well, are meant to have no character. And even then, you don't need some blank slate to put your imagination to work. I know they're supposed to be like tabletops, but in tabletops your characters still have personalities - they're simply created by players - and their choices have more of a purpose than just using different dialouges.

Ah man Jared, I remember playing the DS remake while I was in college. I had the same overall feelings, especially when greeted with that lovely lovely tower. DS stayed in sleep mode charging in my room every day cause of that slog through the end, and I remember telling myself if I game over'd in there, that'd probably be it for me. There was absolutely nothing fun about that at that point. I also recall (the DS version, at least) it bringing in another annoyance with the final dungeon. I'm with you on playing with job systems and party compositions, all the way. A lot of times, I trend towards a super defensive setup, and in this case it worked fantastic for most of the game. I remember using a paladin or some sort of defensive class with dual shields tanking everything, still doing moderate damage, while a summoner did most of my heavy lifting, along with a red mage and white mage/devout for backup. Was super super super hard to kill. I love safe compositions like that. Used it for the whole game... Until the end, when enemies suddenly jumped from 5-15k hp to 90-150k. It was an entire drag for the game to say "Hey, no, unless you want every random battle to take 15-20 minutes, you're gonna swap to something WE want you to play." Gee surprise, out came the ninja and sage. Always hate it when a game does that. Etrian Odyssey has done it numerous times - kinda blows - but the addition of that multiple hour drudgery of final areas just really, reallllllly soured the game for me - even though the rest of it was yeah, very enjoyable (even with BS garuda). At least we got the Lunar Subterrane afterwards! And the Big Whale. Pff, Lunar Whale be damned, it'll always be Big Whale to me~

Final Fantasy V is basically a perfected version of III. It's glorious.
@Bjorick7 жыл бұрын
you don't find the story horribly boring and the combat slow paced? of V i mean, 3 is worse in both those regards (the ds version, at least)
@TheButterCollector7 жыл бұрын
I find its story charming in a mid-90's kind of way. It's got the two most badass FF protagonists ever in the form of Faris and Galuf. I never found the combat slow-paced, but that's because I usually turned the battle speed up in the settings. I should also specify that I'm talking about the GBA port which has a much improved script from both the original fan-made patch and the PS1 version.
@genesisSOC6 жыл бұрын
I actually much prefer 3 over 5. And Dimensions is the perfected version of both of them.
@Ritokure6 жыл бұрын
Bjorick The story takes a backseat for the real meat of FFV: Character development and world building. The cast of V is easily the best main cast of the Classic Final Fantasies (be real, VI's cast is a ragtag bunch of cliches, with only one or two standouts, and it's too big for its own sake) and the world feels more connected to its characters than ever before (with many characters being native to a certain place, and interacting with it and its inhabitants in an interesting way - Bartz and his hometown being an example) and thus, more organic. Hell, even the simplistic plot is also a blessing, because it allows FFV to not take itself too seriously, making a more lighthearted adventure that, tbh, Final Fantasy has ever done only once since (in FFIX, which most people agree it's a fantastic game).

As much as I love FF3, there is always one big problem with the game. Random enemies that have AoE moves that deal MASSIVE damage, and if they come in GROUPS and you get BACK ATTACKED its pretty much a game over unless you're grinded hard enough.

Only played the DS version (several times), and I really enjoyed it. It had its quirks, but it was just such a wonderful throwback for me at the time. Plus, the improved visuals looked great. Was just so very happy to have more endearing characters in a more straightforward story. The more modern FFs are a bit much for me in terms of angst and pretense.

Am I the only one who tears up immediately every time in these reviews when the Final Fantasy theme plays? I never played any before VII and VIII, but that theme throughout the whole series is just... I'm a nostalgic nerd for lots of things, but that theme is like instant time travel to the best memories of my childhood. The only thing more powerful for me is another theme from the series: Aerith's Theme from VII. Makes me bawl like a baby whenever it plays for more than a few seconds.

FF9 was essentially conceived as "Throwbacks: The Game". They wanted to go back to the classic fantasy-and-not-quite-steampunk feel after 7-8 went pure sci-fi and proceeded to fill it to the brim with references to the earlier games. Cameos, reused names, in-jokes, remixed music tracks, it has it all. It's pretty fun to find them all.
@PabloLink747 жыл бұрын
That's why I like IX so much. I just don't like the character design that much but IX is a great throwback to the classics. I only played from IV to X (skipped VIII), that's why I didn't get the Invincible reference before.
@sleeping_giant06207 жыл бұрын
You should play VIII,I personally like it better than VII (my favourite is still IX (or VI,I don't know)),just be aware that the main protagonist is a dickhead. My only complaint is that the way the stats work can be easily exploitable,but the game makes up for it (you'll know that when you play it).

The pixel remaster is a really fantastic way to play this one. It's much more accurate to the NES version, but they rebalanced the entire final dungeon so you don't have to grind for 10 hours just to deal with the final boss. Some classes were rebalanced too so you don't have to make everyone ninjas and sages.
@kentknightofcaelin4537 Жыл бұрын
I enjoyed the PR, but really, what reason is there not to be a Ninja or Sage by end game?

@Kent, Knight of Caelin Sages don't get as many high level spell charges as the Devout or Magus, nor are they as powerful with the spells. Curaja was healing about 1500 hp for all members with my sage while my devout was healing like 2500
