Hollow Driller no because the day Bruce’s parents died was the day the old Bruce died. From that moment on he changed. To fight the criminals and corrupt he had to become someone else. He had to become something else. The batman persona became his base identity; his true self. When Rachel says this is your mask she’s referring to the fact that “Bruce Wayne” is merely a persona now. It’s not his true self. His true self is what terrifies criminals.

Looking back at this scene after The Dark Knight Rises makes this scene twice as powerful. You can see the pain on Bruce’s face after Rachel tells him that the man she loved was no longer there and she only sees Batman, knowing that his second life as a vigilante will keep them apart, and Bruce doesn’t want her to say that but deep down knows it’s true. And she said that maybe someday that Gotham will no longer need Batman they could be together, It’s epic that they’re actually foreshadowing that there will eventually be an end to Christian bale’s Batman. And in The Dark Knight Rachel thinks that Bruce can not let go of being Batman, but in the TDKR you see Bruce passing on the torch of Batman, entering a relationship with Selina, ultimately proving Rachel wrong. Man this trilogy is superb

This scene really highlights the tragedy of Christopher Nolan's Batman. Bruce started off as lost man out for vengeance. He wanted justice for his parents at any cost, even if it meant killing someone. Rachel on the other hand was an idealistic attorney, and to her, justice was only pure if it was served legally, which is why she could never love Bruce when he was lost. After a chilling discussion with Rachel about true justice, Bruce left Gotham and returned as Batman. He fought criminals and let the law decide their fates once he defeated them. When Rachel found out Bruce was Batman, her love for him awakened. Rachel wanted to be with Bruce more than she ever had when she found out he was Batman, but ultimately, Batman was a symbol bigger than their relationship, and the needs of Gotham took priority. In the second movie, Bruce almost gave up Batman so he could be with Rachel, but Harvey took the fall for him. Rachel wrote Bruce a letter informing him she would marry Harvey because Bruce didn't give up Batman. She dies shortly after, and when Bruce mourned her, he mentioned to Alfred how they were meant to be together. Alfred burned the letter Rachel wrote him and Bruce never found out. He continued to fight criminals as Batman in Rachel's memory even though they would have never been together anyway. It's so tragic.

True. Absolutely obsessed with the soundtrack and Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard really made masterpiece scores throughout the trilogy. I have become a fan of Hans Zimmer and now regularly listen to other videos of his other soundtracks. According to Hans Zimmer, Nolan asked him to join the project and Zimmer said he then asked Howard to come on. Zimmer's idea was that he would compose for Batman and Howard would compose for Bruce. Though I never see any track identified with which one composed it (I think purposely) I always assume that if it hits you in the feels like this music does and it's identified with Bruce's scenes, it's Newton and if it gets you riled up and its associated with Batman's scenes, it's Zimmer. I believe Zimmer also composed the Joker's and Bane's themes, but Zimmer can definitely hit you in the feels too.

One thing I actually realized from this scene: Bruce was actually better off without Rachel in his life. Rachel never really cared for Bruce as much as he wanted her to. He sacrificed so much, but Rachel was still critical of him even after finding out he was Batman. By the time The Dark Knight rolled around, Rachel seemingly lost respect for Bruce. I understand this scene and it's purpose for the trilogy. Rachel is faced with two choices: be with Bruce knowing she is his second consideration after Gotham or try to wake him up to the fact that him being Batman is an unhealthy outlet for his rage and is in fact a justification and fuel to his rage and an excuse not to process it and let it go. If she is with him, then what incentive does he have NOT to be Batman? This is kind of like Alfred ultimately leaving Bruce to try to make him realize he needs to give up being Batman in TDKR. To turn away from being Batman means a move toward starting to heal his wounds and secure his mental health. As Alfred talks about in TDKR, Bruce could have always gone the route of his parents and helped Gotham that way. He could have helped the police with his tech. He didn't have to CHOOSE to be Batman but that is his focus and it has been since he came back. And because of that Rachel lets him know she loves him, but she's not going to settle for being second fiddle to his unhealthy obsession. I think this is similar to the struggle people who are in love with addicts go through. You have to decide whether to put your life on hold indefinitely to wait for someone to work through their "stuff" because you know they can't commit to the relationship on the same level as you do until they have made the decision to change their life and/or to become healthy enough to be in a relationship. That is why in TDK when Bruce says he 's going to turn himself in and doesn't - even though he had every intention to do so but didn't because he realizes Harvey is setting up a trap for the Joker by confessing to being Batman, Rachel interprets it as "He's never going to be able to give Batman up and I'm done waiting." She says in the letter she leaves with Alfred to give Bruce something to the effect that there might be a time when Gotham won't need Batman but maybe not a time when BRUCE doesn't need Batman. So she's being sincere in this scene. At THIS point, she's willing to wait for him to get his mind right. She's not being a bitch or a tease in this scene as some are saying. Rachel is a strong character - although i'm not sure Katie Holmes has the chops to pull it off. She simply has enough self-worth not to settle for less of a relationship than she knows she's entitled to. But I will say, writing a letter to tell Bruce she was going to marry Harvey - she did THAT in bitch mode.

And at the end, after Banes revolution is stopped, Bruce is finally the man Rachel was waiting for. Making Batman an icon stripped Bruce Wayne to the core but he managed to protect Gotham eternally. Now, Bruce Wayne can live the rest of his life knowing that his parents' dreams have been realized. Hands down, the best trilogy of all time

Bruce can't "be consumed" by his own personality. He has just decided living up to it. Doing otherwise would be a betrayal against himself. So it need not be so. In fact, I think Bruce ultimately proves it in the last film. What I'm trying to say is that it's her right whether to choose him or not, of course, but... In my opinion, true love doesn't even allow you to think about it. You just stick to that person, to the end. Especially if she "believes in what he does", like Alfred said. :)

Finally someone agrees with me! Ahaha. In my opinion all I cared about as far is Rachel is concerned is her nailing the relationship with Bruce. Katie seemed like the sweet girl from his childhood who did love him. They had chemistry so it was so believable. That was all the acting I needed. To believe in their relationship. In my eyes that was the whole purpose of Rachel in the movie and so I think Katie did well. :)

I prefered Katie as Rachel, I think she was more believable and she and Christian had really nice chemistry. It worked really well in the movie. I was disappointed when she didn't want to make the 2nd movie and they cast Maggie instead.

This, alongside the recasting, was why many didn't care when she died. Her last words too, were to Harvey, while Bruce spent years unable to get over her. I mean the character didn't even have the spine to tell Bruce her decision, to his face.

The one that she loved is that young boy Bruce Wayne she used to play around with when they’re kids, before his parents got brutally murded in front of him. Unfortunately that Bruce Wayne is nowhere to be found until the end of the trilogy when he is no longer Batman, and finally chose to be happy.

It's a shame that Rachel Dawes wasn't invented until this film. It would've been great to see her in "Batman:The Animated Series". Anyways, you can't change the past, but hopefully, she appears in future "Batman" installments. It'd be nice to see more of her.

I'm a woman and I understand why she did that. she rejected him first because he was just a depressed rich boy who yet had so many things to figure out. shee rejected him for the second time for several reasons 1.he isnt a stable man no sane man would dress as a bat and go around the city and act like a hero just imagine seeing that scene in real life .lets think she accepts him as batman there is still problems 2.he has so many enemys and that put everyone around him in dangar 3.his job requires him putting his life on the line so she must always live with the fact that one day he wont comeback even batman himeself doesnt beleive he will live long enough and the stress of it would wear her out and 4.her being with batman might distract him from saving the city which is very needed and she wants him to saves the city thus she sacrefice her potentioal relationship with him 5.if you are a fan then you must know the real one is batman and the mask is bruce so if she was in relationship with him she would be with the mask one not the real one and the last batman won't let ANYONE get close to him from some certain point he doesn't share anything about himself about what he feels to anyone even to catwoman so even though he is a great man he is not a great partner or a husbend material because he would be a pain in the back .

I love how Goyer & Nolan write the script for the films, they treat their audiences not like idiots, with the intellectual diologue, like the little rapport at 2:51 with Alfred and Bruce and sort of psuedo-double entrende in how they say things but both know the hidden meaning
