I have a '09 V8, my dad has a '13 d5 polestar. My dad was one of the first people in Sweden to collect his first xc90 back in 2003, as his 40th birthday present to himself, and has since owned five of them. He bought his latest one last year, as his 60th birthday present for himself. He love them, and so do I, having grown up in the backseat of them. He wanted a v8, but they're quite rare to find good examples of here in Sweden so he settled for a d5. Both are great cars, but I (and probably my dad too) prefer the v8's smoothness and power, and sound. It isn't that much more expensive to run after all, and both are just as reliable as one another.

Here in Eastern Europe the D5, 1.9 TDI by VW Group , 2.7 CDI (CRD) OM612 by Mercedes and 1.9 JTD (CDTI) are the most recommended engines for poor people and the most durable EU diesels ever.

I have a XC70 D5, with the 205hp engine it has a fair 0-60 time and is pretty good for fuel consumption. Very similar to the XC90 under the skin, mine is a P3 SE LUX so pretty well equipped for a car of that age. I was originally looking for an XC90 but very happy with what I have.

Bern, your love for Volvos are legendary. The Swedes gave probably heard about you by now. Why not include more interesting content with clips from Volvo engineers, product designers to lend perspective from others that share your passion, or technical documents, patents, on innovations of this platform from that period to weave a background story, almost like a Top Gear short.

Even though the D5 is the popular choice in the U.K. for economy, it wont pass the London ULEZ sadly. But the petrol powered siblings do, so its a great cheap SUV to have in London, without having to pay the £12.50 daily charge. I myself have a '97 Volvo 940 Classic 2.3LPT CD spec, since 2007 and its been the best car ive ever owned. I dont drive it much in London, but it gets a lot of looks as most of them have departed London. Before 2021 there was a large amount of them owned by the large Jewish Community in Stamford Hill in north London.

I really like your videos and I’m glad you enjoyed the d5. The heated seats are really common in European Volvos but the ones sold in Spain and Italy don’t really have it. The rear turning light of this cars seems a bit strange for me. Like other models I’ve seen have an orange bulb and this has something else. I’m wondering what are the main differences between the us and eu models. Mechanics here in Europe say that the most reliable diesels are the 163hp and the 200hp. The models between 2006 and 2010 had the 185hp d5 which has some issues and there are owners who had to replace the engine. Anyway, it’s a nice car. My dream car also since my childhood. Hope I can get a 2004-5 d5 one day

Nice! Thank you, it was a real treat!! Yeah the old tail lights are very retro looking! The main differences that I could notice were the different, better materials they use in the Executive models! Otherwise they feel pretty similar

I would avoid 2002-2005 XC90 T6, they have a really bad transmission! The 5cyl diesel/petrol engines are great. The 3.2 is also good, but I love the V8. It costs a little more to maintain sometimes but the power is nice

@@BernonCars Dayum! I just checked and that's 150,000 dollars in today's money. I suppose a fully loaded Land Cruiser (250) here in Austria for 139,000 dollars isn't as bad as that. In Japan that fully loaded Land Cruiser 250 costs a mere 49,000 dollars which is insane. I need to find a way to import one from there but it's very tricky. Japan only allows export of used cars and going through the auctions raises that price. You need to find someone in Japan to buy it for you and then sell it to your in a private sale. I just wish it was available there with the non-hybrid 2.4 turbo because 276 hp is a lot better than 201 hp of the 2.8L diesel and the hybrid just eats up your cargo space. All better than the 161 hp 2.7L 4-cylinder though. It definitely is the most reliable engine Toyota currently makes and might be the most reliable of all time but man it's slow in the heavy Land Cruiser.

So im reaching out to the community - Can any of you recommend the XC90 as a family hauler when it comes to kidsseat in the backseat. Being a big, tall guy, im having trouble finding cars where we all fit and feel save. Thanks in advance // Big Swedish Volvo man.

Bern, not really important, but the specs on trim levels are wrong, and very depending on countries. For instance, parking sensors weren't standard on base trims, and leather only from intermediate.

I have 2003 Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 165hp MK1, 320.000 kilometres. It came to Turkey , but came from Italy and I bought it in customs. I've only one in Turkey. 1-) In 2003, 7 seat was optional for customer. My car is 5-seat. 2003 Car isn't 7-seat standart. 2-) Headlights are garbage. I had to replace them with custom made. I couldn't see anything and I was afraid at night. 3-) It'snot capable off-road. LMAO. You need to throttle so hard to activate 4WD to not get stuck. This isn't Land Cruiser. My dad made off-road try mistake with this one. 4-) Suspensions are soft. Exactly. It's prone to get broken. My suspensions on front were done, which caused engine to slide front and caused micro scratches which caused transmission fuel leak. Don't go over that bump fast. 5-) Transmission will need to get replaced but V8 engine ones have different tranmission which is more prone to get broken. You can research that. 6-) Injectors didn't fail but maintenance on it was needed. Also, tie rods on the wheels will need replacement as usual old car. 7-) Fuel is 12-13litres/100km in city. It's almost half down in road trips. Engine isn't loud when you are inside of the car. 8-) There are many chronic issues that you will hate: Fuel cap not opening (open back-seat to fix that), wheel getting locked for no reason (remove the tranmission cap in the car to move the yellow thing). No one who has no time or capability to maintenane on a car should spend money on XC90.
