This is the author, Dan Hummel. Thanks for engaging the book and for your extended reflections. You gave me some things to think about, too, especially as what I’m working on now is a history of evangelical discipleship over roughly the same period (the last 150 or so years). If you’d ever like to discuss more on or offline just let me know!

Omg, I had all these questions too as I was growing in my faith and it eventually led me to the Catholic Church. I didn’t want to be Catholic but the more I learned about it and honestly gave it a chance and prayed, after 5 years Im finally entering the Catholic Church. Jesus prayed that would be ONE. Keep praying and keep seeking, the Lord will lead you.

@Michelle071
@Michelle071 2 ай бұрын
@@Repent.Believe.obeyJesus if that’s your only issue then you should be come Catholic! Lol but in all seriousness, and some food for thought: veneration means honor. We honor people here on earth and even people who have passed on. (Martin Luther King Junior for example) how much more do the saints who have gone before us deserve honor for what they did for the Lord? When we get to heaven, God will honor us with crowns and rewards and responsibilities. As for images, think of all the statues/images that honor people of the past (Abraham Lincoln, Mt Rushmore etc.) The scriptures say to give honor to where honor is due. To saints here on earth and in heaven. Hope this helps! :)

Wow I found myself nodding and relating to so much of your journey! I was raised nominally Catholic then lived a degenerate agnostic lifestyle for years. Came to Jesus through nondenom vague Christianity, made my way into dispensationalism thanks to JMac, then was introduced to covenant theology by RC Sproul, read everything Doug Wilson ever wrote and was SURE I was meant to be CREC presbyterian. But I wanted to rule out Catholicism & Orthodoxy before committing to CREC. Aaaaand now we are Catholic lol! If someone have told me 10 years ago that I'd ever be Catholic again or that the Catholic Church was the one true church I'd have laughed in their face. The pursuit of Truth is a wild ride, so happy you're both up for the challenge!

Hopewell Heights, Thank you for your testimony. It is authentic. I can relate to your "journey." I am Catholic. However, I also studied much of the Protestant world for academic-professional as well as personal reasons. I spiritually accompanied many who entered or returned to the Catholic faith. There are tremendous resources for moral conscience formation. For respect for marriage, for having children, for creating a community culture. We live in a country divided which is Christian - 50:50 divided 52:48 non-Catholic Christian vs. Catholic. So it is good to know the differences. There is fulness of teaching in all practical matters relating to family life plus the heavenly realm of sacramental life.

I loved this conversation! I was definitely raised in a dispensationalist background (Bible college, church ministry, missions, etc.) followed by about 5 years in an Anglican church (planted by Rwandan Anglicans so a very different type) that felt so refreshing and vibrant until 2020. That church had been a breath of fresh air for those years and it was completely shattered. They shut down, had zero grace, discriminated against my child that had medical reasons not to wear things to hinder breathing so she couldn't attend activities etc. We also witnessed church leaders mocking people and ideas online in such ugly ways. We now have no church home and have tried many but none feel like home at all! So your discussion about church attendance hit home. I've wrestled intensely for years, settled on attending great Bible studies, but I don't think I'll ever belong to another church as a member. To put that much trust and authority into hands that can so easily abuse will not happen. I love to hear the hope in you both and I wish I shared it. I feel that much of the American church is lost and will not recover.

People who don't like church structure usually don't want authority or tithing. 40:00 The church I'm in is doing expository preaching. It took about 3 years to get through Matthew. This would be a "plain reading of scripture " except they commentate and take the passage wherever they want to go. My childhood pastor was great because you would work your Bible when he was preaching. He had that philosophy of the old and new testaments being complementary and necessary to understand them both. When he taught, you'd be in the old and new testanents, seeing how verses worked together and balanced each other, etc. It leads to better interpretation (hermaneutics) because you're seeing the many paradoxes in scripture that balance each other. Plain expository preaching doesn't do this. You're not comparing scripture with scripture. You can end up with one dimensional interpretations from single verses in isolation.

Do you think fetal microchimerism of Jesus cells on Mary had some divine impact on Mary? His body was always apart of her! It reinforces my belief of her assumption. How can her body corrupt with Jesus’s cells merged inside of her? Blessing to you and your beautiful family! Love you guys!

I'm enjoying this talk. I recently came to understand just how recent dispensationalism is. I grew up with it though in a Pentecostal sense. When I was 28 I attended a Baptist calvinist church, though they didn't identify as 1689. I later left and joined a baptist dispensationalist, Macarthurite church. When I say Macarthurite, I mean pastors from Masters seminary and hugely influenced by John Macarthur (The masters seminary) and his interpretation of things. I just couldn't continue there and so my husband and I looked into a Presbyterian church. Yet even there had differences. Learning from church history and theology has greatly influenced where we are now. I have differences about Christology, Baptism and Lord's Supper with our reformed brethren. We ended up in a liturgical Confessional Lutheran Church LCMS. We love it there ❤ pursuit of truth has taken us there this far.

I came from a covenant theology background & currently attending dispensationalist congregation, while studying early church & Catholicism/Orthodoxy, and I see truth in both sides. It's hard for me to ignore Israel getting their nation back in 1948 after 2000 years. It's hard to ignore the promises to a literal Israel & come away with the idea that the God of Hosea & Romans 11 would break his covenant with Israel after they rejected him. On the other hand, I see the covenants all through the Bible. The way I view it, is God never breaks his covenants or gives up on His people, and Israel will come back around. But "the church" was a temporary replacement so the fullness of the Gentiles could come in. I also see the "pretribulation rapture" or a special resurrection in the Didache before the great tribulation that finally humbles Israel. I feel too ecumunical to fit in anywhere in this respect.

Loved hearing your book discussion and historical review throughout this episode! I found myself thinking about the perspective of community salvation (i.e., all the members of the body of Christ forming the single body of Christ) in terms of a quote I credit to my husband: "Jesus isn't a polygamist." That is, salvation of individual believers must always be connected to the life of the whole Christian church on earth, whom He loves as His bride. None of us can be the church by himself/herself.

I find dispensationalism to be truthful. It seems like there is a lot more manipulation in Gods word through a Reformed theology to benefit and "grow the church" and "grow the kingdom" but on the otherhand, where we live, its hard to find other christians to study with dispensationally which makes it feel a little more isolating and i feel like i am the one who has to compromise my spiritual stance when studying with others. And almost every other christian i talk with that is from a reformed stance has never even heard the word dispensations/dispensationalism which is to me is a bummer and especially for people my age (33) and younger makes me think they are so caught up in the trendy movement the reformed church has going on.

I am a Russian Baptist and we believe in Armenianism and Calvinism together. Americans only believe in Calvinism, Catholics only in Armenianism. We see that the Bible teaches both and that is how we see it as well. There is no need to separate them. A believer still sins, but he will work his salvation out through putting to death the works of flesh and that takes your entire life. You are not free from sin until you are dead.

Yes! The Bible needs to be interpreted in liturgy by priests of apostolic succession. Eastern Orthodox is the early church that made the Bible. Every bishop and priest has had hands laid on since the first bishop Peter. The whole liturgy is scripture. It’s real worship, entering the throne room with God. Find an Eastern Orthodox Church near you, it’s worth a look!

Stretch Your Faith, yes, hopefully they will see your comments and follow your advice. Every Protestant split was based on heresy, and denied the full divinity of Our Lord. Beginning with Luther who questioned the Eucharist, then Henry 8th who was geo- political. From Calvin onwards it became more heretical. The Holy Spirit does not abandon innocent believers, so there are kernels of truth in various belief-practices. But the fulness of the Faith is in the Roman Catholic C. It is the most most comprehensive and as you noted, provides sacramental grace. Catholics have been squelched in the U.S. so evangelization is challenging for them.
@stretchyourfaith1025
@stretchyourfaith1025 Ай бұрын
@@Charity-vm4bt yes all Protestant sects are based on heresy, even though there are true believers in those denominations- of which there are 45,000. However, I’m speaking about the Eastern Orthodox Church which has remained whole and undivided since Christ. The great schism of 1054 is when east and west split leaving Christianity no longer whole. The Roman Catholic Church split off of orthodoxy because the pope wanted to be in charge instead of a council of bishops as it had always been before. This was the first major split in Christianity and since then, we now have numerous versions of Christianity and 45,000 Protestant denominations. Eastern Orthodoxy is the root of the church built by the apostles, everything else has split off of that.

I grew up Freewill Baptist and as a young adult switched to southern Baptist and married a pc son. I bought in to the rapture theory. But if I can offer some food for thought for anyone reading this. I’m still learning and studying Gods word almost daily so do with it as you may. First off there is a huge difference from reading plain scriptures and studying the Bible percept by percept with context and going back to the original language which is not hard at all the do with a Strongs concordance. Now I will say when I was a Southern Baptist I’m at fault I was spoon feed and I didn’t test anything to Gods word. I just trusted and believed they were the “specialists” and Godly men they would not lead me astray. I did read my Bible but I didn’t study it because I didn’t have a clue on how to. I asked several pastors and deacons and I honestly don’t think they had a clue either to be honest now in retrospect. But here’s my food for thought 1) Jacob is the 12 natural seeds or tribes, his blood lineage which Christ our Messiah came through. 2) Israel is the spiritual seed of God, His children/lineage. The reason I say this God tells Jacob you will no longer be called Jacob but Israel and 5 vs down God is calling him Jacob. Also God will use Jacob and Israel in the same verse. 3) all 12 tribes are not Jews. I have noticed people clumping them all together. The tribe of Judah are Jews or if you are a resident in Judea you are called a Jew. This is easily looked up in the Strongs. This is what Christ was speaking of in Rev 2:9 and 3:9 the only two churches that taught who was who. People claiming to be Jews but are not from the tribe of Judah and in return giving them a bad name. 4) the 10 northern tribes ( the Israelites, not Jews) God scattered, still to this day. They don’t know they are Israelites so Katie you can’t say you are not of Abrahams seed because you could be. 5) when we (if we are Gentiles) were grafted in to Israel because of our faith in Christ so all the promises of God include believers. 6) rapture= I know this is a hot topic as a past believer I get it the frustration but it’s absolutely not in Gods word. And I believe this is a HUGE salvation issue. Please hear me out. Gods word is clear that the false Christ will come and set up his throne before Christ returns and he is going to claim he is Christ. Daniel tells us that he comes in peacefully and prosperously. I see this as the huge deception the world as fallen for because they think (because man told them) that they will fly away and we don’t need to worry about the tribulation. People are going to worship him thinking he is Christ. When I say people I mean Christians who love Christ but choose to listen to man over testing it to Gods word. This is why the Bible says Christ will become the stumbling block. This is why Christ says pray you are without child when I return (spiritual adultery / Christ takes it down to our level so we can see how He feels about that). This is why mother will turn against daughter and so on because the mother is trying to get her child saved by Christ ( just the wrong one). This is why people will be praying for the rocks to fall on them because of straight embarrassment of being deceived. This is why Christ says pray you are not the first to be taken. I could go on and on. I just wanted to give you some food for thought. I think we are so blessed to have some true Bible teaching churches but Amos 8:11 tells us the famine in the last days is not for food but the true word of God. So I would sum it up with test everything to the word of God. Don’t just read the Bible but search out each word. If you have any questions about anything i have said I will be more then glad to try to point you to scriptures so you can seek out Gods truth. God bless.

I agree we cannot say for sure whether we may have roots in a tribe from Abraham ( though I don't think it's likely for me). I think that the church will still be here when the anti-Christ becomes known. If you say this with most Christian groups, you will be looked at like you are heretical.

On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”b 8So it is not the children of the flesh who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as offspring. 9For this is what the promise stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.” You guys are on an amazing journey! Jesus is Lord over all & that does not exclude politics. The BIble says that there were members of caesar's household that were believers. Just look at where Christians removing themselves from the political sphere has gotten us in the last 50 years! We NEED Christians in politics. Otherwise that sphere is occupied by the godless & we get more godlessness. We should bring the gospel to bear on politics, culture, education, media, all of it.

@@NowThatWereAFamilyPodcastplease see my comment about educational resources available for all Christians from the Catholic Church to support parental life including marriage and family. It is impossible to do justice to your search in a few comments on a YT video open to the potentially controversial general public. Seek guidance from people like Jeff Cavins and Scott Hahn who have walked your path and provided many teachings for young contemporary family people such as yourselves. Many blessings.

What was in regard to? Elisha has some interesting pronunciations. SOW- siety instead of suh-siety. He also says boLth instead of both.

It sounds like Elisha read a lot of emergent church theology in the earlier 2000s. The whole rebellious, chuch at a bar with a cigar vibe. 58:00 Scripture talks about worldliness, loving the wirld, double mindedness, carnality, lasciviousness, sensuality. These aren't modern inventions nor are they off base. If you attend a mega church, I would guess the majority are nominal Christian. I was at Craig Groeschel's Life Church for 7 years or so. I finally realized I was a nominal Christian.

No baptism and no communion yet claiming to get your theology from a plain reading of scripture. Wow. What was the cult your Grandpa was in? 1:01:00 My pastor was always anti Scofield study Bible. I assume we were covenantal from everything you've said. The ligical end of dispensational theology is dumping anything you like. I am convinced most if not all theoligical error is just looking for loopholes on things we don't like. Don't luke dancing in the Bible, get rid of it. Don't like the idea that women must submit or can't teach, get rid of it. Don't like prohibitions on homosexuality, get rid of them. Speaking in tongues and the gifts are weird, get rid of them. Deliverance is creepy, get rid of it. Etc. 1 Corinthians 12 [10] and to another the working of miracles, and to another prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people], and to another discernment of spirits [the ability to distinguish sound, godly doctrine from the deceptive doctrine of man-made religions and cults], to another various kinds of [unknown] tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues.

If you are looking for covenants and authority, Christ's gospel has been restored and is found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We make covenants at baptism and in the Lord's house, the temple. We have a prophet and apostles who have authority from God.

Hi Rebecca! I am glad you have found this podcast! Elisha and Katie are really great people and I hope you can continue to enjoy them. The beliefs of Mormonism and Christianity are quite different. Have you ever looked into the historicity of the Book of Mormon? kzbin.infoLUQNM6tFBCk?si=xKeRxtvm4soHa3ma

Yes so many episodes they are looking for more. And its right there in the LDS church. Living forever as a family after we die can only happen after being sealed in Gods holy Temple. I would love them to read the book of Mormon another testament of Jesus Christ just for fun. It's not replacing the bible its working together to make the bible even more Gods word. Both are true!
