Have you ever wondered how to find a boondocking spot once you are on public land for your RV? Join us as we travel from northern Colorado a few hours south to find the perfect campsite, and find out what I did to cause damage to the Airstream Basecamp or to the Toyota 4Runner!
Although I've been to this particular BLM (Bureau of Land Management) area before, my usual campsite was taken so I must scout around for a new spot. Hopefully you find some tips and tricks of boondocking within this video!

I live in my Prius full time and National Forests are my first go-to spot. I have seen a noticeable, significant increase in the amount and type of trash being left behind, including human waste, and that has caused the Forest Service to close some disbursed camping areas. I attribute it to the massive influx of "new" campers who have spent the Century That Was 2020 in isolation now having a lot of energy to "get away from it all." It is a pity they do not have to take a test before they come to their land.

Looks like a nice spot. Should have some nice sunsets/sunrises camped there. You need to get yourself one or two removable flags you can put on the truck and see in your mirror(s). Something a bit taller than your highest point on the camper so you'll know you might make contact before you do. I used to have one on my truck back when I towed a trailer. It was helpful in letting me know I might be making some incidental contact. Enjoy your new digs. AE

Super helpful video, those branches always seem to look more tame than they really are. I make my doggo put on his seatbelt too. Just like Jasper he is afraid of the shaking in an RV and he does not like off leash dogs. And he has a tendency to eat inedible stuff so the garbage at camp sites is bit of a nuisance. Great, informative video as usual. I am relatively new to the RV / camping adventure. Like you, I am a remote worker in the healthcare industry and decided it’s time to see more. I have primarily stayed at “resorts” but want more of the boondocking. Any tips, especially apps or online that you have found useful to find locations open to boondocking?

@TailsofWanderlust

Thanks Jason! I have thought of one, but they do make hooking up a bit more complicated. Instead I went with air bags in the rear suspension, and the 4Runner has no issues towing with the current weight setup.

Howdy! Ok I’m days away from getting the basecamp finally, and I need some advice. Airstream is offering additional things like the Weboost, airstream connect and surge protector. Because I work remotely I do want those things (although it’s my understanding that AS connect works with ATT which I have) but the issue I’m having are the exorbitant fees they’re charging for the hardware and installation. And I quote- The WeBoost is $1035 installed. The Airstream Connect is $1599 installed. The portable surge protector is $332 I wanted to ask if you had it done at the dealer, if you experienced similar prices, or if you did it yourself and it was easy? Many thanks! Still loving your content and refer back to it always as I prepare for my first set of adventures this winter :)
@TailsofWanderlust
@TailsofWanderlust 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for reaching out! I have a WeBoost, but installed it myself. It is not permanently mounted, but instead I put on or off the roof via suction cups when needed. If you check out my internet video, you'll see the setup there. Others have mounted it to their trucks, but I feel that would be less convenient. I don't know much about the Airstream connect. I use a regular AT&T Hotspot as well as the WeBoost or Mimo antenna and that works for me (also in the internet video). Not sure what extra you get from Airstream connect. As for the surge protector, I don't have one as I boondock majority of the time. So I don't have to worry about hooking up my electrical. However, check out: campaddict.com/best-rv-surge-protector/. There are several options and it comes down to what you feel safest with. Hopefully that helps but comment back if you have more questions!

Cassie, your middle name should be Charisma...because you've got it in abundance. I stumbled on some videos you're in and you mentioned working on a master's degree. I have no no doubt you'll do great! Trust me Cassie, I know these things!!! On a more serious note, we have two 4Runners in our family as potential tow vehicles and I've been taking a serious look at the Basecamp. Did you consider or actually modify the Toyota in any way, like, adding a transmission cooler, or, rear air shocks to keep the vehicle level? Also, any thoughts on how the 4Runner might handle the larger 20 foot Basecamp? Mileage while towing? Thank you!
@TailsofWanderlust
@TailsofWanderlust 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe! Thank you very much for the kind words! I did add air bags to the rear suspension to help with the sag. I originally had larger bump stops, but I don't recommend those for any off-road driving. Here's all the info: tailsofwanderlust.com/2020/08/26/toyota-4runner-mods/ Technically, the 20X is over tongue weight capacity of the 4Runner, although within towable weight. I personally wouldn't tow it with the 4Runner. As for mileage, I can get anywhere from 9mpg (high winds) to 13 mpg (slower speeds, hills where I just cruise downhill, etc.). Average is 11 mpg.
@joemartino6976
@joemartino6976 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Cassie. Nice write-up for the 4Runner and very useful. I drive a 2008 4Runner with almost 190K miles and it has been super reliable. You've convinced me the rear air bags are a necessity after seeing the pics of your vehicle. Also like the on-board compressor. The transmission cooler add is arguable, though, installation would void the warranty. All the best Cassie!
