i really do not want to be misunderstood on this topic so a few points to reiterate: i cannot stress enough that i support the covid vaccines and mask-wearing. but, i worry that more often than not, the discussion has come to be about making the people you disagree with feel stupid and humiliated. if the goal is to move past this pandemic while protecting our own, and the people we love's, safety, we should make more of an effort to put ourselves in one another's shoes. this is not to say that any form of anger is unjustified -- sometimes you deserve to be angry and sometimes, you can't help it. but, anger shouldn't be presumed. this has been a globally sensitive and tough time, so let's try our best to be less hostile :)
TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 intro
1:15 some preliminary thoughts
4:40 some dominant arguments for being anti-vaxx and/or anti-mask
6:13 trust in government
9:46 fear of fearmongering
14:31 the efficacy of vaccines and/or masks
19:49 the "natural immunity" argument
21:41 covid is not as dangerous as we are led to believe
23:13 a convo about luck
24:54 conclusion (+ nicki minaj)

@@iheartjbgccb Not to mention, they don't even document properly how many people actually get injured from side effects. I know a pleth of people who have, myself included. This is also why I don't agree with the current stances on neurodivergence, people need to realize that the medical condition, not a personality trait to accept. It's as if they think that you can't accept a person if they have a neurological issue or neurological difference, we need to categorize it as just a way to be different, and it's natural in a part of who we are. I'm sorry, having spd, tourette's, autism and other disorders are not personality traits, and we should not accept it as if it's a part of that person. In fact, as someone who actually got a neurodivergence from too many shots, yes, in fact that was the case, as neurodivergence symptoms do not show if they are genetic until the age of 6 months old, mine were on set at a whopping 2 years old, causing utter confusion and skepticism amongst medical professionals and occupational therapists who worked with neurodivergent kids every single day, I can safely say that, no divergence is not fun, it's not a blessing, it's not who you are. I would have been happy to not be injected with something that had traces of mercury and aluminum that bound my neurology in my brain and my communication between my brain and the rest of the nervous system, causing me to have severe gastrointestinal issues that I've had to live with my whole entire life, that is nearly life-threatening and no medication properly serves it and makes it better, there's no miracle cure, except for trying to find a way to cleanse out what those heavy metals did. It was immediately on set right after my vaccines at 2 years old, I got a high fever, took a cold bath, but against my will. I do not remember this, I remember a lot of things from when I was 2 years old, but not this. My parents told me, that I absolutely love loved baths as a child, it was my most favorite activity in the whole entire world, I always was up for a bath, but then, the night right after I had my vaccines, they put me into the bath, only for once the water touched my toe, I screamed as if an animal just bit me and tore off a part of my toe. For some reason I happened to not remember this, but I can assure you that, my symptoms have been subsiding the more I use cleansing techniques, as in trying to consume foods that help the body cleanse and repair. I've also been doing a little bit of stem cell therapy with the help of a doctor, which has astronomically helped me personally. This is why whenever someone tells their story regarding vaccine damage, which if you look it up, there's actually a lot, but it gets buried by the media. It also gets buried by fixed statistics, and also, with how many people I know whom also got vaccine damaged as well as how many people they happen to know that have been vaccine damage, and even people I know who have never been vaccine damage and have been vaccinated their whole entire lives, no at least one or two people who have been vaccine damaged. Not to mention, a lot of people don't know the source of their neurodivergence, and I know I would be more than happy if I never got neurologically damaged. I used to try to accept SPD, also known as sensory processing disorder, as just who I was, but no, it's not healthy for me to accept it that way. It's like saying being extremely obese is a personality trait and something you should accept about yourself, no you should absolutely not hate yourself for it, That's not healthy either, but also it's not healthy to act as if it's a natural part of you and not something that needs to be fixed. I don't like all this talk about how we need to stop thinking we need to fix autism. They're right, we should stop acting like the people who are autistic need fixing, but I'm sure most autistic people once they get to feel what it's like not to be autistic, would it feel quite happy and relieved. Well I've been in the healing process of this neurological disorder I've had for majority of my life, I felt better and better, and being more neurotypical is the best thing in my life I've experienced in a long time. Feeling not as awkward, not feeling as if you have this clown of nothingness in the middle of your frontal lobe, is the most amazing relief. I wish people would acknowledge that, you're a divergence is a disease, no we shouldn't divide ourselves against them, just like we shouldn't have prejudice against anybody else for any other reason, just like we shouldn't fact shame, and hate others for their medical conditions, we also shouldn't hate people or see them any differently because of their neurodivergence, but we should acknowledge that it is a problem, and our life will be better if they at all ever got a treatment. Think of it like a food allergy. No you don't critique your friend who has celiac, no you don't make fun of them, you accept them wholeheartedly and don't see them any differently than the rest of your friends, but if you could, would you try to change their situation for the better? When she wished that there was some magical cure that would make it so that they don't have to be so absolutely careful about what they eat, that if they don't, they would have to be rushed to the hospital or worse? I feel that way about neurodivergence. Just like how you would have a perspective like this about your friend with food allergies, you wouldn't simply see it as just another way of being, you would see it as a very much problematic health issue, but that doesn't mean your perspective of them as a person and as a human being is any different

@@robertyounger5849 you seem to be making a broad assumption about vaccine questioners. What this person is trying to explain is, there's a huge huge difference between the Alex Jones fans who believe that Obama is trying to turn the frogs gay and the original intellectual progressives that stick to original progressive values, and don't allow what current society deems as progressive thought. That's what being progressive truly is, not going by the command of a supposed higher power, whether that be a fictional god, a scientist or group of scientists, a president, any other politician or a newscaster. Being anti-establishment is very essence of liberalism, questioning authority is very much also component as well. It's very important to keep these things in mind when it comes to defining yourself as a liberal or a progressive for that matter. If we're about progression and progression needs resistance of power, and always has been, then suddenly becoming obedient and defining progressiveness as such is a foolish thing to do. It's in fact acting conservative, because that's what the conservatives have been doing exactly, except for their higher power not being politicians nor scientists, but rather their pastors and whatever their perception of God is. That being said, there's a huge difference between actual conspiracy theorists and intellectual progressives.

Otaku, I’m not making a broad assumption about vaccine questioners. I think they should be able to question vaccines whether you think their reasons are good or not. You’re making the assumption that a good chunk of these people don’t have good reasoning. You never went to ask any of them what their opinion was, and they were pretty much banned from discussing these things on social media. They’ve been making a case for their side for a while and it looks like you guys just decided to show empathy now after all this time because the Covid fearmongering got turned off in place of Russia fearmongering. I don’t call myself a progressive; progressives disgust me. Progressives have been obedient this whole time. They get emotionally worked up and respond the way don lemon wants them to. By the way the chemicals from fertilizers really did make the frogs gay. I’d think environmentalists would care about that but the fact progressives need to frame it as “accusing Obama of turning the frogs gay” shows how progressives need to straw man and act disingenuous to feel better about themselves

@@glitchhhhhhhh It is officially stated by now by multiple authorities that no vaccine against covid prevents the spread of the virus, so that is a complete lie that unvacinated people are endangering others (especially vacinated people). There is no research done that confirms the effectiveness of masks. It's just that the ephemeral and abstract "science", as authorities convince us, says so. I'm not saying you shouldn't get vacinated or shouldn't wear a mask. I'm not saying vaccines are more dangerous to you than a virus. I'm saying that what you believe in is not a reason to take away everyone's freedom. If you fear for your own life - you don't go to places where it is not obligatory to wear a mask or even to be vaccinated. No problem with private restrictions. The problem is with governmental unconstitutional restrictions and outright violence. Look at what is happening in China and most importantly in Australia and Europe. When 70% of the population has already been vaccinated (official european report from about 2 month ago), it is not public health for which peaceful protests are being forcibly suppressed and vaccination passports being forcibly introduced. When the state pacifies and represses those who oppose it now (who you consider a bigger threat to you than a state), it will come for you and everyone else, and it will be too late to do anything. That is how you lose your freedom under plausible excuse. You just wait and see. Tragedies and wars are the best excuse for the state to take your freedom away, promise to return it and never give it back. The only thing that still saves the United States is the wide independence of each state. But cultural war and an increasingly strong federal government are making their job. If Europe's and Australia's people will lose their fight for freedom now, the next day they will wake up in a global China.

Idk if this is the case everywhere, but the vaccine clinic I went to was required to have a paramedic on scene at all times. They also ask you to stay 15 minutes after the shot in case anything happens. I almost fainted during my first shot and they made sure to pull me aside and monitor me until I was feeling better. Then, during the second shot they required I stay 30 minutes instead of 15, and I was fine that time. I believe it is ok to be skeptical and ask good faith questions, that isn't the same as being anti-vax. In the same way someone feels worried or weird about a medical procedure and asks their doctor for clarification before going through with it, and in turn the doctor is patient is respectful, that should be the model we use for discussing these topics instead of going to extremes and name calling. Going to extremes and shaming will largely lead to the backfire effect, and less people will feel trusting to receive a life threatening vaccine for what is now a preventable disease.

America is a unique country. It was built upon the very sole foundation of personal freedom. But people associate freedom with inherent positivity when it is definitely not the case. But we need to acknowledge that freedom is what is allowing us to have these conversations, the way philosophers then discussed the most abhorrent ideas to find one of the many that would be useful to society. Not having freedom in a country is like being that tyrannical parent that expects their child to always do things right, not allowing them to make mistakes and to flourish from it. At the end of the day the right answers will always come forward, no matter how loud the wrongs are.. unless a great force is trying to conceal it.

How do you know that is the reason? Maybe it's because people don't want to keep talking about the pandemic? To judge a group of people not clicking on a video you deem important and calling them tribal based on absolutely nothing, makes YOU look tribal. You don't know why people didn't click but you claim to know why. You have already decided how you view them without facts. How is that not tribal? Seems a bit "I'm better" mentality. That is the problem with centrist mentality, it quickly becomes judgy of the other sides. Amazing how everything online is about the clicks. Not every video gets the same amount of click anyway so why be upset at the lack of clicks here?

First of all, let me say I'm neither an anitvaxxer or an anrimasker and I respect the opinion of medical professionals more than of some 50 yo woman on Facebook, but I have an interesting story I'd like to share. I live in Serbia, so it may not be like this in USA. My grandma passed away a year and a few months ago due to cancer, and she never had covid. Three days after her passing a goverment official (I think he was from the Ministery of Health but I'm not sure) approached my dad and straight up asked him if we would be willing to let them label her death as covid related for some amount of money (something like a monthly salary), he refused but that's unimportant. Again, this was in Serbia but no one would be surprised if the same thing could happen in USA or anywhere else in the world.
@iwatchyoutube9425
@iwatchyoutube9425 2 жыл бұрын
I know several people from Serbia and that does not surprise me at all based on other stories they've told me. Considering how much Western powers have influence in your country, I could easily see some NGO or even the federal government itself promising hospitals more funding if there are more deaths listed as COVID deaths. I don't mean to offend, but I've been told that bribery is pretty common there as well. Entirely plausible story, I agree that I wouldn't be surprised if similar things have happened here in the USA but just in a more top-down formalized bureaucracy way rather than a straight up bribe.
@opheliavalentine6058
@opheliavalentine6058 2 жыл бұрын
It happens in the US too. Hospitals were getting paid to report positive results so what did they do? They tested everyone, even patients who died from car accidents, gun wounds, or other diseases. If they were positive their deaths were recorded as COVID deaths even though covid did not kill them. People are dying with COVID not from COVID. It’s pretty obvious that this virus has become political and for some companies it’s all about the profit. I am unvaxxed and will remain unvaxxed because this vaccine is made with new tech that hasn’t been tested on for long. I believe vaccines are effective but I’m not gonna be a Guinea pig for those big Pharma companies.

I'm someone who couldn't get vaccinated for covid because of my parents who didn't trust it and threatened to kick me out if I did get vaccinated. And I'm in a pretty middle ground about it after it. I would have taken one if I could but I do think it is very fishy how we were expected to take four vaccines for the same thing in the span of a year, and how people who didn't for any reason were demonized to the point where you weren't even considered a person. I felt horrible all those months, on one side by my parents who treated everything as a hoax and on the other side being made feel like a worthless human being because of it, and feeling the need to pretty much isolate from everyone. All I'm saying is going to extremes about anything is definitely not the answer.

i understand that people are hesitant about getting vaccinated but i do want to stress that long-term vaccine symptoms show up before 40 days of getting a vaccine. if there were a chance of people getting SOME form of issues (like decreased mental cognition, or a lowered immune response) it would definitely have popped up during clinical trials for the vaccine. and if you're worried that the vaccine may give you some long term illness or effect other than immunity, then the chances of those long-term effects passing by the clinical trials and getting to you are WAYYY WAYYYY less than you getting covid and dying. people in third world countries (like Pakistan where I'm from) have people walking across snowy mountain peaks to get children vaccinated, so it feels like a slap in the face (imo) to those who are struggling to get vaccinated and you choose to ignore the drive-through vaccination centers that you pass by on your way to work.

Risk stratification by age needs to be considered. The elderly are high risk so getting two shots makes sense. For the young to prevent an illness with a 1 in 200,000 chance of death by taking a shot with a 1 in 5,000 chance of death, that doesn't make sense. To require they do so makes even less sense. If those who are high-risk are protected by the shot, what others choose shouldn't be relevant. And firing healthcare workers who have already beat covid is irrational. They have a better version of what the vaccine gives as their antibodies fight every part of the virus. The shots just train it to fight spike proteins. Not the other parts.

Taking the vaccine in those cases runs the risk of the person feeling very under the weather and needing to stay home from work/school. really like the ending. the part about luck is very factual. in fact when i discuss with some of the professors/tutors back in university, they too agree that sometimes in research, people just get lucky. not to say that people who are lucky dont work hard, but more like, because of certain luck, it helped them find the "answer"/ "truth" to their research. maybe you should join a podcast someday. i think its better to discuss these issues with people, than making a video on it, as usually people wouldnt search for it actively, but podcast would help convey these messages in a more appropriate manner, and probably to a much larger audience that are more concerned about certain issues

love this! I'm always getting new insights and understandings with your videos. I agree that we should be more empathetic with how we respond to antivaxers though i also understand how hard it is when there's people who go out to protest it and through violent means on top of that. Personally, I really try to stand by dealing with conflict through empathy but sometimes it gets confusing as to where or how to draw the line. But back to the topic, I remember my first reaction to antivaxers and anti maskers was confusion and frustration, that piled with the same confusion and frustration that my friends felt blew it up into flared up anger which resulted in outburst of 'are they stupid' and 'what the fuck' s. Around the same time, someone posted a story that said instead of getting angry, which would do barely anything to change minds, we should look into why people are antivax/antimask or why people think covid is a hoax or why they're scared. This caught me off guard cause it seems like such an obvious thing to think about in the first place but so many people are quick to snap back that there's never time to slow down and ask 'why'. And this obviously goes for the other side too. And now that I think about it, if you pear it back, this is usually how (mature) people deal with other people being angry or lashing out. When a child cries out of no where, we don't just yell back at them to stop crying, we try to figure out the cause, we ask them what's wrong. When a s/o comes home agitated and sensitive, we don't just tell them to stop. We ask them what's wrong and what we can do to help. Though it's a different situation because being antivax and antimask puts other people in danger, i agree with you that a more effective way of getting through to these people is being empathetic and these same methods we apply to loved ones can be applied to strangers. Because at the end of the day, people just want to feel heard and validated.

I knew from the very beginning that this whole chorona debakle was going to be extremely opinionated. Of course this would lead to direct invasion of freedom to act as you choose to. Of course invasion of freedom is met with a range of natural human reactions such as, doubt, worry, agression and so on. Among of many other things, I am in the camp of people who of course believe that the virus is real and serious. I also feel like this crisis is abused by the government, like mentioned in this video. It's just too juicy for a government to not abuse this situation considering all the attention they can get or distract. Times of uncertainty are times ripe for governments to promise solutions for the price of your freedoms. I am not against wearing masks at all, so don't get me wrong when I am talking about freedoms. But laws made now for this specific incident, will in the future provide as rulings to look back on, for the next time when it comes to invasions of your rights. Making it easier, every time. I feel like a freedom degeneration like this is not even avoidable with the current form of democracy in which we exist, right?

Thank you for making this video. As someone who has read at least 3 medical research papers per day for the last 12 years, I reviewed the literature myself and came to the conclusion that it wasn't necessary for me (I'm young) and that developing a robust immunity (IgG, IgA and IgM) for a duration of 17+ years (SARS-CoV-1 data) that I would remove the potential for unknown side effects (no 5 year studies done yet), socially isolate until the virus naturally evolved to be less harmful and approach it that way. I was right, it did become less harmful and I caught the virus and had no issues. But I arrived at this decision through a lot of research. So please understand, some of us are very intelligent, educated in medicine and arrived at a very different conclusion. Ultimately, we should be able to make our own medical choices.

This came up a lot during the pandemic when vaccinated people struggled with feeling outside their values over their schadenfreude toward antivaccination folks who were diagnosed with covid. I wrestled with it myself. I remember thinking one day 'is this who I want to be? Someone who celebrates people getting sick or dying-regardless of the circumstance?' I would justify it for a minute by thinking: 'but they're threatening my health and the health of people I love.' In the end I couldn't make it work with my values."

During the parts where I wasn't distracted by who I was looking at, and paying attention to what I was being told ;D , I heard a lot of good points about how easy it would be to interpret a lot of information and about how drawing a line between vaxx vs. anti-vaxx isn't helpful. It's good to see this alongside a solid case for vaccination and good mask usage.

I totally agree w you when it comes to trying to understand people with opposing views. I think you hit it right on the money when talking about luck most people on the left who talk about politics online are lucky they weren’t born in a place where they are fed misinformation bc most people r pretty susceptible it. If you don’t mind answering how do you feel about vaccine mandates?

I appreciate your thoughtful discussion of the way mistrust for the government plays into Americans’ vaccine hesitancy. Our government has a long track record of acting in line with corporate interests to the ultimate harm of the people, which understandably gives the people cause to doubt whether a state-sponsored vaccine is meant for the good of the people, or just to make money for a corporation and the politicians who are stakeholders in those corporations. Having grown up in a conservative community, I can attest that mistrust for government and big pharmaceutical corporations is foundational among anti-vaxx people.

Thank you so much for making such a thoughtful and well composed video on this very complicated subject. I’ve honestly felt so alone and in the middle during this pandemic. I personally believe in the efficacy of the vaccine and masking up, but I see the nuance. My mom is the director of pharmacy at a hospital, and she is super anti the COVID vaccine and anti mask, saying it is all BS. She thinks that because of her experience at her hospital, where 52% of their hospitalized COVID patients are vaccinated, and 48% unvaccinated, she sees a lot of conflicting information first hand, and therefore has a lot of physician friends who corroborate her experience. I’ve tried explaining that just because that is her experience, that doesn’t mean it’s happening everywhere in the country, but she can’t get past her own bias. I honestly can’t blame her sometimes. But I think people need to stop thinking of this as an issue of doctors vs the dumb uneducated public. Everyone is involved here, and nothing about this is simple

Dude, she has first hand experience. Of course she is justified and most likely 99% right. It really baffles me how you can not believe her, more over trying to convince her off the opposite she is experiencing everyday at work. WTF

I feel like some people don't take it for religious or philosophical reasons. And others simply because it's a weird unknown substance their putting in their body, probably afraid of how their body is going to react. I guess it's like immunizations. How some people don't take those for personal reasons.

we all want the same thing. we're all trying to figure out how to achieve it. we have conflicting ideas. sometimes we agree and we collaborate and we make a lot of progress. sometimes the opposite. sometimes we collaborate on something that works in the moment, but will no longer work if we continue doing the exact same thing. we must find what works better than the last thing. we must evolve. it takes luck, it takes knowledge, it takes a lot of things. but i think YOU olivia (im assuming your name is?), have a lot of the things to take thought forward towards something that works better for everyone. i respect that and i appreciate that soso much. i want to do something similar. hopefully ill try to. thank you for your brain! its a beautiful thing! ^0^

This is a really great video and I so appreciate you taking the courageous role of opening this discourse to your audience. I looked up the "18 reasons I'm not getting vaccinated" article and felt that it made an extremely valid argument. I'm curious what sources you used to "fact check"?

I love watching your videos so much as i think in the same mindset as you but you definitely organize these ideas better than i ever could. The main idea is that bias leads us to believe what we believe and whit so many perspectives we cant rely on one truth ever and we will never know the real truth to anything and that should be respected within conversations and debates.

The video is AMAZING, I mean the pandemic is pretty much over now but an interesting topic, however there was one thing I didn't understand- talking about feeling more or less empathy for different people. I just find that weird- you can't just choose to turn your empathy on or off for different people, and understanding other people us especially important when you view their opinion as incorrect. Just found that weird, I feel the same "amount" of empathy for people raging about microchips and aliens and people hesitant about the safety of a new vaccine. Like, noone chooses to do the stupid thing on purpose

Thank you for your insight. Your channel is a gem and im glad to have found it. I’d like to hear your thoughts about vax mandates. I know you mentioned you were Canadian and I’d like to hear what you have experienced in Canada. For myself in the US, many folks are in the ultimatum of either being forced to get vaccinated or quit their job. Not surprisingly, folks are choosing to quit. Not to mention that many places in LA are already asking people to show their vaccination status for entry to restaurants, amusement parks, malls, etc. Personally, I feel if the US government didn’t push Vaccination and went with Florida’s current approach to vax policy, there would be a higher amount of vaccinated people. I feel forcing people into an ultimatum would make people who were initially on the fence choose to stay unvaccinated in defiance to the mandates. This is what’s happening with Southwest Airlines currently, it’s a serious factor that will lead to a prolonged worker shortage in America. Thank you again for the great dialogue you bring! I look forward to your next video!

I like what you said a lot except for when you discussed about how some people don't believe covid is as dangerous as its said to be. You brought up how people you talk to are mostly using their personal experiences with the virus to back up this claim, but this is a personal experience of yours. I have not had this experience. The people who brought this topic up to me (me included), were citing the survival rate and other scientific data. In no way am I saying the virus isn't a danger to SOME. It absolutely is. But MOST, it is not. I actually had a very bad case. Was sick for 6 weeks & ended up in the ER one day for complications related to it. But I'm one of the rare ones, and I acknowledge that fully. Anyway! I love your content & have been really enjoying hearing your perspective! Keep it up!! 💕

Oh! Also, doctors recommended that I not get the vaccine since I had such a bad case & built up such strong antibodies. My health is very complex and has a lot of unknowns, so they thought the vaccine would do more harm than good for me SINCE I had the virus. If I hadn't had the virus, then it'd be a totally different conversation I'm sure!!! I'm pro-vaxx but pro-choice of the vaxx. Not all people need it, and it shouldn't be mandated. Everyone should have their choice. It's absolutely helping people! I'm so glad we have it.
