ASL Receptive Fingerspelling Practice.
Intended Audience: Mid-semester, Level 1 (Beginner)
Dr. Bill of ASL University (Lifeprint.com) drills a volunteer student (Danny) on fingerspelling.
--------------------------------------
Note from Dr. Bill: Yes, I know that at times I spell "very fast" to beginner level students. I do that on purpose to help them get past always trying to read "letter by letter." The goal is to learn to recognize the shape and flow of fingerspelled words. I intentionally challenge the students to see how much they are capable of accomplishing.

Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

So anyone correct me if I'm wrong: Receptive fingerspelling is like word recognition in reading, where your brain recognizes words as a whole or in this case the whole word fingerspelled and its movement and not necessarily by recognizing each letters? Thanks for your help!

Skilled signers do indeed read fingerspelling in the same way the English literate comprehend English text. Many fingerspelled words morph and blend into lexicalized versions that look like signs. The sign for "no" was at one time the individual letters "N" and "O." Over time it mutated into the sign we now gloss as "NO." (The caps are intentional and part of "gloss" -- not yelling.)
