@sean---the-other-oneАй бұрын
A few things to note: In the beginning of the story, before she wanders the ship, River hears voices of the crew in her head but then also hears Jubal. She then wanders the ship trying to find the source of the voice. She gets hold of a gun as at some level she knows the source of the unknown voice needs to be taken out. Mal tells her “No touching guns!” and she responds “No guns”. So, she has to find a way to solve the situation without gunplay, and devises the plan to lure Jubal out of the ship. Finally, since she first arrives on the ship as a stowaway (not her fault), she asks Mal “Permission to come aboard.”, seeking his proper approval to be onboard Serenity and part of the crew. He allows her in, in spite of her volatility, as he’s realised she’s an asset to the crew.

Jubal Early was a real historical person, a Confederate General in the US Civil War - and supposedly an ancestor of Nathan Fillion. He was a bit deaf in one ear, and they used that in this portrayal, that's why he misheard a couple things that Simon said. He was also, based on his writings after the Civil War, a white supremacist, which makes their casting choice nicely ironic. The actor portrays him brilliantly in my opinion. At the end, Jubal was pretty calm - the consensus is that he probably had a beacon to bring his ship to him on autopilot. He probably would have been a recurring character. I loved that Mal, used to giving orders and expecting them to trust him to have a plan, accepted that River had a plan, trusted her, and acted immediately when she gave him the order to go.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to your reaction to the movie. Take care.

I wonder if River could tell Kaylee was afraid of her after the rescue, so she didn't want to see it up close OR she didn't want to make her more afraid by reading her mind. Or both. Either way, it's sad because they were pretty friendly before that.
@doug3691Ай бұрын
@@Kayjee17 I was thinking that it might be that River didn't want to intrude upon her brother's relationship with a girl. She does seem comfortable around Kaylee at the end of the episode, so hopefully no baggage there.

"Permission to come aboard?" Such a great line. When she first arrived on the ship, she never asked it, no one granted it--she was just there. She's a problem. She knows this -- she's acutely aware of it in fact. On the other hand, she's just demonstrated that she's perfectly capable of masterminding a pretty effective caper her own self. Is she "solid"? Not even close. But then neither is Jane. Jane's a loose canon, but he is a canon. Sometimes in their line of work, you need a canon. River is more of a Swiss Army Knife, significantly more versatile and useful than a canon. In the universe in which Firefly runs for six seasons and a movie, this episode is the fulcrum in which River starts being seen as less of a problem and more of an opportunity.

What you should understand is that when "Firefly" was green-lit, Joss Wheedon was under the impression that he would have something like 3-5 22/24 episode seasons to work with, which is why there is so little back story for the characters in the episodes that were filmed. The movie does tie up a 'few' of them, but you can't cover all the threads within the timeframe and narrative of a single 90min film, so there is a massive amount missing.
@joshuawiedenbeck6944Ай бұрын
I'll wait until after you watch the movie to explain anyone's backgrounds. Inara has a very specific reason for not wanting to be in a relationship with Mal. If you go back and watch all of the previous episodes, it is hinted at. There are only a few times where she gets legitimately mad/upset at Mal, and they follow a pattern....

I'm of the opinion that at the start River was tapping in to each persons biggest regret. For Mal it was the war, for Jayne it was his betrayal on Ariel, for Simon it was leaving the hospital. River said she'd go with Jubal Early - but that was just a ploy to draw Jubal out of the ship, she was playing everyone. She coaxed Kaylee into freeing herself and unlocking Mal's room, so that Mal could get into place on the hull, ready to give Jubal a boost into space, and meanwhile she's stalling, keeping Jubal engaged until Mal was suited up and outside. Brilliant! You said "Mal and Inara outside the ship" you meant Mal and River. Freudian slip/ship? 😉

Jubel does a great job of being... not right in the head. Also there is a line in "War Stories" where Mal says something to the effect of "no one comes on my boat I don't meet" - well until this episode River never asked for "permission to come aboard" and Mal never granted it... officially. Simon does not say he doesn't like (aspects) of his current life, just that it was not his plan.
@UpLateGeekАй бұрын
This episode is so great, for so many reasons, and it gives us a glimpse of how awesome the show -would- _should have been_ if it continued. It's weird to think that Jubal Early is a great part of the episode, but he's a genuinely terrifying villain, which makes it all the more an interesting episode. Another "good" part was how Mal asks Simon what would happen if he were the one who River accidentally shot, and he ends up getting shot! At least it was just in his leg, and Zoe was able to step up and help. And that's kind-of what this episode is about, people stepping out of their comfort zone and doing what needs to be done. It would've been so much safer for everyone else if River just gave herself up as soon as Juble stepped aboard, but that would've crushed Simon, and she couldn't hurt him like that, so she stepped up with a plan to get rid of him. Kaylee was terrified, but she stepped up and let Mal out of his locked quarters, and Mal stepped up and did the deed, literally throwing Juble off his ship. But more importantly, the two people who had the most concerns about River decided to put aside those concerns and trust her to do what's right for everyone. In the end, she not only earned their trust back, but wiped away any concerns they had about her being a risk to the crew. The one last thing I'll mention is re: your comment about growing to like Mal more. He was definitely a lot more cold and quick-tempered in the first episode and early in the season. When you think about it, he's probably only had the ship something like 6 months, give or take, and we learned in _Out of Gas_ that she's his last hope at freedom from the tyranny of the Alliance, so at that point he's probably more willing to cut people loose if he thinks they're a threat to his crew or his ship. And we learned in _Ariel_ just how far he's willing to go when they're threatened, but also how much he's willing to forgive. In the end, I don't think he was even entertaining the idea of cutting River and Simon loose. I think by now he's learned that his crew is his family, he just needed that little reminder that your real family are the ones who step up and do what's right when needed. Anysways, I'm glad you loved the show. Can't wait to see your reaction to Serenity! And I believe in you, I believe you can stay awake for the whole movie! 🤣

I think that Firefly might go over a bit better these days. At the time it was made, the big scify hits were Startrek, Battlestar Galactica and Stargate. All futuristic means of transport, dress and weapons and here comes this show, space ship held together with string and chewing gum, no fancy guns just good old gunpowder and bullets plus the hero dressed as if he just walked on set after a night out with the man with no name. The studio heads didn't know what to make of it so they aired it out of order, aired it at bad times and when it didn't immediately get good viewing figures they binned it. Never really gave it a chance to gather an audience as the characters history was revealed. If it was made today it might have a better chance to establish itself but Joss Wheldon's name seems to be poison just now so I don't think that any project of his would get a hearing.

What River was seeing when she walked through the ship was everyone's memories. She saw and experienced their most tramatic and intense memories they ever had. You know where Jayne's memory came from, but imagine what Mal felt at the end of the Battle of Serenity and how he must have questioned his unwavering faith in God. What he concluded about God, faith, and religion was "None of it means a damned thing!". Why would Inara say "I'm a big girl. Just tell me" in her past? It's very very important and one of the most tramatic memories Inara has because it has driven her life from the moment she heard the answer, but what it meant was never revealed. To me, it would be what you would say to a doctor after an examination and he was hesitant to tell you what he found. What River heard Shepherd Book say was also a deep memory of his. All of these were meant to be clues to future episodes about the main characters that never aired. Joss Whedon was asked about all of these things years later and revealed where he intended the storylines to go.
