The return of Spike always makes me think of when Buffy was resurrected. Their deaths were a huge moment, a hero’s sacrifice and a phenomenal end, only for it to be snatched from them. Can you imagine the feeling of knowing you are giving it all up to save the world, only to be plonked back onto earth? He may not have been in Heaven but he was finished. He now understands Buffy even more than before.

he doesnt understand buffy because even with the feeling of sacrifice for greater good, he still didntot spend time on heaven. being on heaven is what made being alive feel like hell, not sacrifice. want a proof? the only change on spike after getting back is not missing heave, but fear to go to hell. buffy was traumatized af.

Spike may have been brought over to Angel to boost the ratings, with him being such a popular character, but no matter the reason, he is a great addition to the show. The chemistry between Angel and Spike is too great to not have him there.

Another great episode in follow up to the opener with Spike now joining the gang. The dynamic of the show really picks up now in very way. The comedy levels also go off the charts with the the banter between Angel and Spike. So funny watching them like jealous teenagers over Buffy, and the look Angel gives when Spike tells the others he has a soul too is just so funny. The evil necromancer is the villain here, and a great little plot twist when Spike and Angel double cross him at the end. We also have great comedy from Harmony too at every opportunity which just adds to the brilliance of the final Season.

After all this time, you still doubt the genius of the Whedonverse writers? Shame on you. James was the main reason why Angel got another season. The fans were ecstatic about his cross over. James and David had "lightening in a bottle" chemistry. They brought out the best in each other, and were hilarious together. Relax and lean into this because after this, there is truly no more to the Buffyverse. I do not blame Gunn for how he felt, because I don't think he got the credit for seeing solutions that the others couldn't. Season 5, minus an episode or two, is my favorite. I think Wolfram and Hart wanted Angel to use the Amulet because they could control him in that state, and make him do their bidding.

Sorry you're feeling bad. Hope you get better. Spike being returned was an...interesting move? Still to see him interacting with the group, especially Angel(I swear those two act like an old married couple.), is definitely a different move. Wesley saying that the amulet was sent by either the senior partners or a third party. Either could give team Angel a bad time.

I get your ambivalence re: Spike's return, didn't bother me at the time but there was a gap of course (usually you benefit from not having to wait but maybe not always). Didn't buy his change of heart for a second though personally (even given it's Angel, whose "hair goes straight up" and is "bloody stoopid" :) - Spike's come too far to just casually be bad again).

Spike returned when he didn't want it, just like Buffy was resurected when she didn't want to be. Can't believe I never consciously put that parallel together. Spike antagonizing Angel will always be worth him being a main cast member here. We haven't really seen it since BtVS S2 Angelus era, and Angelus did more of the antagonism during that time.

I know that at this point that prophecy about the vampire with a soul will "Shanshu" is now questionable, to me. Is it an actual prophecy or did Wolfram & Hart fill it with lies and made it seem like it's super important? Remember, when Angel first saw the scroll he said he felt he was being pulled to it. Which makes me wonder if that was coming from the scroll itself or if W&H put a spell on it for Angel to feel like the scroll was calling to him. Yep. I was questioning EVERYTHING at this point. And yes, at this point, I also do think Buffy should be notified of Spike's return. They were lovers and cared about each other. I think Buffy would've liked to have known that. I think it would bring a smile to her face but also question why he's back if he did his thing to save the world. This entire time we've been seeing The Powers That Be and Wolfram & Hart make their moves. It's the big showdown: Good vs Evil. Where are we heading to? Who's actually making the moves? Hmm 🤔

The original idea for a Faith spinoff was for her to travel the world on a motorbike with Spike as her ghost sidekick, when she decided to do Tru Calling instead they kept the concept for Angel.

I think the problem with a vampire having a soul and trying to make amends for the past is that they're still vampires which are demons and demons don't go to heaven. I always wondered why exactly they were still affected by crosses and holy water when they had a soul.

Spike shouldn't have a big "Sin Debt" of all the evil he has done. He should only be responsible for his actions since having his soul back (and before he was a vampire). At least that's the way I see it.

W&H definitely wanted to destroy/trap Angel; I don't think they even knew Spike had a soul, maybe didn't even know he existed. Angel stuck in the amulet would have been a great move by W&H.

That makes no sense though. Why would they give him control of W&H, to immediately trap/kill him. And its not even W&H that gets the amulet out of Sunnydale. Also, Angel is supposed to play a pivotal role in the apocalypse but which side he is on is still a mystery. W&H have him take over, to help "grey" him up. They want Angel on their side during the apocalypse.

@@alexh8613 if W&H didn't get the amulet out of Sunnydale, why was it delivered as mail in W&H? When exactly did they offer him control of W&H - the last episode of the previous season of Angel? That would have been after the point where Angel brought the amulet to Sunnydale thinking it was for him to wear. When he came back to LA without the amulet, still walking around free in the flesh, it was time for plan B. If he'd gotten trapped in the amulet, they wouldn't have given him the head spot at W&H - they would have him trapped in the amulet, unable to do much, available for them to play with, taunt, make deals with, with the ability to offer him a body to inhabit...and more importantly he wouldn't be messing up their plans. Trapping him didn't work, they moved on to testing and tempting him.

@@ernesthakey3396 First, have you watched the show all the way through? I don't want to spoil here, as it's clearly stated who sent the amulet to W&H. As we see this character with the tattoos later on. They offer Angel the amulet before he takes over W&H, not after. It is payment in order to entice him to take the job. He initially turns down the amulet, saying that Buffy can take care of herself. You could argue that trapping Angel and then blackmailing him for his release was their plan, but they could do that at any time. They are Wolfram & Hart. They have endless resources. They don't want him trapped. They don't want him dead. They want him dark

@alexh8613 I had forgotten who retrieved the amulet from the Hellmouth. But Lilah gave Angel the amulet initially. Per the Wiki: "In exchange for his acceptance of the position as C.E.O. of Wolfram & Hart Los Angeles branch, Lilah Morgan offered the amulet to Angel. She explained it had purifying powers, and she gave Angel a file with information about the situation in Sunnydale. In handing the amulet to the vampire, Lilah said that, apparently, the object was crucial for "some kind of final battle."[2]" You're saying Lilah, who'd died, but came back from Hell to keep working because death doesn't end your service at W&H, didn't know what would happen? I think maybe she did know, and probably thought it was funny. But okay, whatever.

There's a theory out there that Buffy used her slayer strength to dig down and get the amulet to send it back to Angel, since he was the one who gave it to her, and she knew he could use it if worst came to worst with this Wolfram and Hart thing. The theory is bolstered by the fact that Buffy was there right up to the end, so she'd know where to look. I'm very certain that if she knew Spike's ghost was in there, she wouldn't have sent it to Angel... but if she found out he could only be helped through the resources there, then she would have.
