Fireplace Blower Kit Comparison - Ours vs. Cheap eBay & Amazon Kits

Күн бұрын

In this video, Terry explains the differences between a fireplace blower kit purchased from FireplaceBlowersOnline.com and cheaper alternative kits found on eBay and Amazon. The cheaper kits on eBay and Amazon are often sold by third party resellers and entirely manufactured overseas. In many cases, our installation instructions and product descriptions have been plagiarized directly from our website. You will also find that the cheaper kits have limited to no customer service and no published phone numbers. Furthermore, the cheaper kits often use inferior quality components, such as sleeve bearing motors and outboard bearings. These bearings tend to fail prematurely and are often times much louder than their ball bearing counterparts.
Here's the kit we compare in the video:

Our fan went out and the fireplace store wanted $300 for new blower and installation (fan died after 4 years- not too bad). Ouch. I had a hard time figuring out what blower I needed so I went to the website and sent an email and got a reply within 12 hrs. Mine was an oddball so I sent a picture and Jason figured out the model. Ordered online and received in 3 days- very fast. Packed in foam so it wouldn't be damaged. Just rolling the fan with my fingers I could tell it was ball bearings- very smooth with no side to side play (the old fan would barely roll- probably why my electric bill was so high the motor trying to turn those locked up cheap non ball bearings). I got out my tools ready to spend the Saturday night doing the big install only to find I was all done in about 15 minutes (two slip on connectors and a ground wire only- my kids had fun helping). Thank you Jason. My family is enjoying a cold Sunday morning by the warm fireplace and I saved over $200 using fireplace blowers. It is very quiet- it is hard to know when it is on. Thank you- Justin

Your company provides a great fireplace blower and an great example of good old American quality customer service. I ordered your GFK160-KT blower. It absolutely improved the heat distribution for our fireplace... which my wife noticed immediately. Your website had everything I needed (e.g. videos, manuals, and testimonials) before I placed my online order via your website. I had a quick question regarding my fireplace electrical setup. So, I called your customer service phone number. Your customer service phone was quickly answered and an articulate expert quickly understood and answered my specific question. After purchasing your fireplace blower, I was informed with a simple and informative email with an order tracking number and how to contact you if I had an issue with the delivery or installation. It was simple to order and to install. This was a very informative video about fireplace blower kits. Thank you.

Very informative video, having dealt with Chinese mfg's I can say that you get what you pay for. Usually it's the soldering job that can be a nightmare from one mfg to another. Definitely would always go with ball bearing motors over the old style, longer life and much quieter operation. Our landlord refuses to buy blowers as they said they would 2 years ago, the places have been built 12 years ago. Will check your site out after I get the model number on our Superior Gas Fireplace.

Besides, they misrepresent the product by claiming ball bearings. As you point out, there is a huge difference between ball bearing and brass bushings. Those brass bushings dry out and fail way sooner than later. "Half a@@ed for half the price" LOL.

Your exactly right. I bought an Amazon “made in China” blower like that for $59.99 CAD. Thought it was great and that I was saving money. It was terrible in every way, but luckily I was able to return it a couple months later when it completely stopped working. When it comes to “Made in China”anything. I do not buy it. Guys….If you buy anything, especially mechanical, you are NOT saving anything by purchasing the cheap stuff. A good American or European made product costing 4 times that price will save you money in the long run. Boycott China. Support North America. How many decibels is the fan when running on high? I want a gas fireplace but my only problem I have with them is the noise of the fan. Thanks
@fireplaceblowers
@fireplaceblowers 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Fans aren't typically measured in dB, so we don't technically have a dB on them. Some things to note however. These are very quiet in comparison to cheaper models that use plastic and sleeve bushings. You also have to keep in mind that anytime you add a blower to what's essentially a large metal box, the noise of the rushing air is somewhat amplified. That amplification depends a lot of the construction quality of the fireplace and the noise insulation features of the blower kit. We use high quality dense foam to prevent metal on metal contact, which also aids in reducing resonance. So these are about as quiet as one can expect in a standard installation. Tangential blowers such as the ones in this video can be a little noisier than their centrifugal cousins, which enclose the wheel, whereas tangential blowers have open wheel designs. Open wheels can cavitate a little more than their centrifugal counterparts, which can lead to more noise. But there's more to consider. Size of the motor stack, quality of motor stack, 60 hz "humming" and overall air flow can also impact noise. So if you're concerned about a specific application, call us anytime and we'll be happy to help. Regards, Jason

based on what i see in your video there are three basic upgrades in your kits: 1) actual bearing on the ends 2) bigger shaft on the motor which may mean better motor and lastly 3) there is no play in the fan when its in the housing and the unit is balanced. my question is why is your kit about +/- $80-100 more expensive....I'm just trying to understand if these three things are worth that much more. bearings are not expense, balance fan requires better quality, so a bit more expense....i can't comment on the motor...thank you in advance for your answer!
@benjaminhutchins816
@benjaminhutchins816 8 жыл бұрын
+footprintsinconc I was wondering this same thing. I could pay $38 for a cheaper, possibly no-name brand, or $102 for a FireplaceBlowersOnline.com one. In this video Terry even says that you might get 5 years out of their fan, which seems sadly low to me. 5 years from a fan? Why only 5 years? If the crappy one for $38 lasts me 2 years, I could replace it every two years and it'd still be cheaper than buying FireplaceBlowersOnline's - so there's that to consider. If they feel their fan will really last only 5 years, which they don't - since +yoyohooyo mentioned the warranty issue. They include a sad 1 year warranty, for something that is used potentially so infrequently and seasonal, 1 year isn't really enough to use it. Two years would be the least I'd expect, and if they think they only last 5 years I see no point. Now if they said it'd last 20 years and they did a 5 year warranty, I'd probably spend the extra ~$60 and go with FireplaceBlowersOnline; but not when they do all this work to say they're better quality but don't stand by it. It also doesn't help their blowers on Amazon.com get consistent reviews claiming they're extremely loud operations. Now, that might just be because the customers have them on high and don't feel like adjusting them or they bought one without an adjustment and well, are dumb for doing that. Ball bearings do tend to be louder, but they stay around the same noise level, where a sleeve bearing tends to start a little quieter and gets louder over time. This can usually be solved with some machine lube though, like www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KUA2FI which has 1000 more uses as well so many home owners have something like it around. It's true that sleeve bearings don't tend to last as long though. For this type of product, where it's not a perfect fit, and there are so many factors to efficiency loss beyond just the fan itself, I see little benefit of spending so much extra money. Maybe if they were made in america, then I could arguably see the justification. So then there is the $20 for an extended 1 year of warranty, when you could always go with the cheap alternative and a generic two-year Canopy warranty for $4. So there's that...
@fireplaceblowers
@fireplaceblowers 8 жыл бұрын
+Benjamin Hutchins Hi Benjamin, sorry for the late reply, but I wanted to address a few of your questions seeing as they are legitimate concerns. So thank you for your comments!!! Terry shouldn't have said 5 years. These are unscripted videos, so I apologize if the 5 year comment was cause for concern. We have blowers in operation that are more than 5 years old. In fact, mine is going on 7 years, but I clean and maintain my blower very well. There are numerous variables, that I won't get into, that determine a blower's lifespan. Our 1 year warranty is a FULL replacement warranty, which is leaps and bounds over other retailers who might offer a longer warranty but require you to jump through hoops to get the blower serviced. Try purchasing a cheap Amazon or eBay kit and contacting an actual person when you need it replaced after just a week. In fact, try even finding a phone number for one of these retailers. As for the Amazon reviews, I'm not sure which reviews you're referring to. Our reviews are consistently fantastic and noise is typically not a complaint that we receive. The blowers themselves are incredibly quiet, despite having a higher quality ball bearing. Most noise in a blower application is the result of air flow causing the metal firebox to vibrate, thereby amplifying the sound of that air flow. You can test this by simply removing the blower from the firebox. I think you'll find our blowers are surprisingly quiet even at their highest RPM level. Again, there are numerous variables outside of our control that can determine noise in a blower application. All of our kits are assembled and tested in the USA. Most of the components used in the production of our kits are also manufactured in the US. For those blowers that are manufactured outside of the US, we work very very closely with the blower manufacturer. In fact, the manufacturer we work with, manufacturers a large majority of the OEM blowers that are many times more expensive and offer no added benefit. We own the tool and die on everything we produce, have incredibly tight tolerances on our blowers and work directly with the manufacturer on design and production so that we can offer a product above what the OEMs sell. And we do all of this at a price point well below the OEMs. So we're definitely not some 3rd party retailer of blower kits. Give us a call anytime!! You'll speak with someone that actually knows what they're talking about, can help you with installation questions, and will make sure that you are absolutely 100% satisfied with your purchase. Our kits are more expensive, I realize that, and our kits may not always be the best option for everyone. Even if you don't purchase our kit, we'll still offer to help you install it correctly. As a matter of fact, we get dozens of these calls a week! But we're always happy to assist. Custom service is a lost art that we try our very best to practice well. So thanks again Benjamin for such an insightful post to our video. Terry happens to be my Dad, so I'll try and reign him in from making any future comments that could be construed incorrectly :) Best regards to you all! -Jason

@fireplaceblowers
@fireplaceblowers 3 жыл бұрын
Send us an email with your model number and I can certainly help determine exactly which blower kit you need! Air volume is really predicated on fitting the largest blower possible. We have several of them with these features that are shorter than 16", but the smaller the blower the less air they move. For context, a typical 12" blower pushes about 130CFM, while a 8" blower only pushes 80CFM. So there's definitely a difference as the blower size decreases. Do you make a kit to use with vented gas logs?
@fireplaceblowers
@fireplaceblowers Жыл бұрын
Just depends on the make and model of the fireplace. The gas log set isn't usually the deciding factor. It's really more about the insert or fireplace they are installed into. We need adequate space for mounting a blower, so assuming you have space below the insert and a vented or louvered model, a fan kit can typically be added without much difficult.

@fireplaceblowers 4 жыл бұрын
If the kit worked for a while and suddenly stopped working, the thermostat sensor very well could have failed. You can test it easily enough by heating it with a lighter. The blower should turn on within seconds. If it doesn't, the sensor is likely defective and needs to be replaced.

I ended up replacing the whole thing and the new one never came on either. The thermopiles reading low, could that do it?
@fireplaceblowers
@fireplaceblowers 4 жыл бұрын
@@danielallred2254 So long as the fireplace is at least coming on, it should be heating the sensor adequately to turn the blower on. So I doubt it's a thermopile issue. If the blower isn't coming on, it's either a power to the outlet, sensor or rheostat issue. If you have a few minutes, give us a call at 262-989-4882 and we'll be happy to help diagnose.

OK so I looked online and on your site and yours is slightly less than twice as much with the free shipping your offering right now which is a little less then $60 difference. To me it's not that much money and yours has the velcro, ready to go, better quality parts which I know will make it last longer which means I spend less time dealing with it now and hopefully later. I'll take that chance and I just ordered it from your website. It's not always about the "deal" money wise to me! People are always bitching about cheap chinese junk but yet they are so cheap that's what the go to everytime then wonder why everything is so stinking cheap when it begins with them! Thanks for the helpful info.

Do you have an ad on Amazon.com for a blower kit for the Monessen GCFU32C fireplace fire box? Seems your product is better than the rest. My init will be installed Oct 1st. Unless I find a better deal I guess I'll buy your blower.

+fireplaceblowers A GCUF32C is scheduled to be installed by the natural gas company Oct 1 , if not sooner. The gas co gave me a better deal than I could find on line and they install it free, but they don't sell blowers because this state does not permit vent free gas heaters to be the primary heat source.

I ordered one of the cheaper ones off Ebay, paid $50 for it. No wobble, runs very quiet, used 2-sided sticky tape to secure it in my fireplace. No reason to pay $150 for a blower, the shaft and bearings are not worth the extra $100. All of these blowers are manufactured in China, whether they are put together in the US or not makes no difference.

I think the take-away here is that the cheaper one is a knockoff with a few demonstrated cheaper components. If you think the two things they showed in this video (bearings and shaft) are the ONLY two differences, well, I think you missed the point of this video.

Jerry great point, I live in Kenosha and have burned thru 4 motors from Quadrafire on my 4100 insert. Now figure at $130 each it's sad :( Now a couple times thru the heating season I have to remove entire front of unit and take it out blow it out re-lube bushing and the bearings on the motor side are inaccessible. I'm having to stand unit on end and soak bearings to try and get oil in. It does stop the squeal but it's such a hassle because typically there is no warning when the noise is going to start. Nice HOT FIRE and I'm there taking it apart. FUN not! Thank 4 the great video comparing the two units.

Yes. The "extended" warranty extends the existing 1 year warranty. There is a warranty section on that page that details the warranty that is included with each product we sell. Sounds like we may need to clarify our verbiage a little better :)

I purchased an fbk 100 form bbq factory. Haven't installed it yet. I was watching another video from this channel, and took a screenshot of the motor when it came into good view. I did a Google search of the model number of the motor itself. Both motors are made in China, but from different companies. It appears that "fireplaceblowersonline" uses a little bit better China made motor, identical to the other chinese motor with a slightly smaller shaft. Wonder what the price difference is for the motors individually, or in a bulk order? What is the price difference between sleeve bearings and ball bearings? How much is the spring taking the play out of the shaft? Is there a major design flaw with sleeve bearings? I believe what we see is nearly identical chinese shaded pole motors from 2 separate chinese companies. Neither motor is american made. The only difference is shaft and bearings Yes I agree that "fireplaceblowersonline" has a purchasing contract with a better provider of pole shaded motors. Could it be directly from the Chinese firm? Or from a vendor in America, which could be a small percentage to do with the inflated price? The padding... Just a shortcut from one company, and a added feature from another.. Maybe this non fireplaceblowersonline kit wont last all winter, maybe it will last forever, maybe theirs wont either. The only thing I concern myself with is the motor burning up. The shaft, housing unit, or padding have nothing to do with that if that happens. I'm all for American made, but I'm gonna have to call capitalism on this one...even if i succumb to buying his product due to catastrophic failure of the chinese product that isn't identical to his chinese product.

This style of fan is fundamentally flawed. They are horribly inefficient. It's a wonder that they move any air at all. Using better bearings, etc doesn't address the fundamental fact that the concept is very wasteful. I own one that I want to replace with something better. The problem is that all of the alternatives on the market are mediocre at best.
@fireplaceblowers
@fireplaceblowers 6 жыл бұрын
We agree! The problem with the OEMs is that they're often using the same blower application across hundreds of different models of fireplaces, and unfortunately, a one size fits all application doesn't always work best. We're also typically constrained by space, which is why tangential style blowers are often the most widely used application. We actually started working directly with one of the nation's leading air movement specialists, which has dozens of top engineers on staff, to start addressing some of these issues. Our problem has always been getting the OEM fireplace manufacturers on board in supplying us some of the data we need in order to help improve efficiency and air flow. Pressure, box design etc are usually outside of our control, which makes developing a good universal application difficult. The bearing design just provides for a much longer lasting blower, since the environments these things operate in can often times be very harsh. Heat, ash, dust all contribute to the challenge :)
