We literally got this done last minute as we don't get too crazy for the 4th of July. Crazy, right? You would think we would. But, enough enough people suggested to Jake to do this and we try to do what our viewers demand. So, firework artillery it is! We are trying to get as much suggestions as possible for new boom items to test. If there is something you want to see, drop a comment and we will add it to the growing to-do list.

When I was a kid in Colorado, my Dad would get in his Aeronca Champ each year, fly to Kansas and come back loaded down with fireworks. A BUNCH of fun memories of those times, but my favorite is the day I was using a bicycle fork as my stand and shooting pop bottle rockets into the air. Dad came out and schooled me on the "proper use". He promptly angled the forks so the rockets would fly over the neighbor's house who lived across the street into their 4th of July BBQ party. Sadly... in today's word, this kind of thing would likely lead to 911, Cops, Lawsuits and us having to move. But "in the day" the neighbors came over scooped up a healthy supply of ordnance and set about counter-battery fire onto our lawn. We had fun for hours rolling around dodging (and sometimes not) the rockets zipping through the air. I miss those days, both for the loss of my Dad at 90 years of age not too long ago, and the feeling that we could have fun, even a bit of 'dangerous' fun, without the world falling around itself in therapy and litigation. The world's much sadder a place than when I was a kid.

Just a tip for those DIYers. When it comes to mortars. General rule is you use 10% of black powder to how many grams the weight of the mortar. So 200g ball 20g lift charge. Act accordingly..

Let me tell you a story about July 4 in South Texas. I was working on a rust bucket oil tanker. We loaded JP8 in Corpus Christi and were departing for Europe on July 4. As we approached Aransas Pass, San Jose Island looked like a war zone, between the fireworks going in every direction and the grass on fire. Even had a few things fired at the ship as we passed, I did say we were an oil tanker, right...

Question, is it possible you fragmentation fell/blew off before the mortar detonated? 🤔
@burneracc2567 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it did because you can sort of see them go around in a pattern when it detonates together with incendiary pellets that come in fireworks. Sure, it wasn't really effective but like the guys said, those are small charges and not as powerfull as plastic explosives so they can't really send those nails flying that good. Just enough to poke an eye out and get stuck maybe 1/2 to 1 inch deep in you.

A few years ago I thought I would learn how to make my own fireworks. I found some very good resources (legit professionals that preached safety, for good reason). They taught me to make my own BP (pecan makes great charcoal for fast BP). I made my own BP stars though I never packed them into or even made a mortar. After about 6 months I was ready to graduate to the next level and make my own flash powder. Flash powder (you guys already know this I'm sure) is what makes the super bright white light and explodes the stars out in all directions. I studied on it, listened to the pros, and walked away. Flash powder is a whole nuther level of blow your face off because you weren't careful or even if you are careful.
@senseisecurityschool9337 Жыл бұрын
Yep. Similar to you, I studied (a lot) and made my own BP. Made some pretty good mortar shells. And found out the regulations on flash powder are very different from black powder *for a good reason*. There's definitely a difference in the danger. One can make professional sized fireworks with black powder based compositions. No need to lose a couple fingers messing with anything else.

when I was younger, I had a 10cm mortar misfire, After lighting, it burned for 2 to 3 seconds before shooting out of the cannon, but it only went up about a meter above the ground before detonating... I managed to run only 5 to 7 meters away from it before the detonation... besides some hearing loss for a few hours and a few burns on my jacket, I was fine. they are more for show than destruction. But if you are holding it, when it goes off, you are in trouble. one rule for fireworks, never light one you are holding. always place it down 1st.

Glad you guys covered this! Always a blast (ha!) when you guys post a video. I suspect that a great part of why the weaponising isn't doing much is because the payload cannot get to much pressure before the paper shell ruptures, and the fragmentation is both small in number and on the outside, perhaps further reducing the effect? Either way, an entertaining video, enjoy your Americaday, lads. Have a good one!

A cool idea would be to recreate Mexican fireworks, as these are way more powerful than the US ones. The smaller firecrackers are called “Palomas” and they’re pretty strong already. The most powerful ones are called “Cara de Diablo” and have killed people before. Back in the day there was one called “Lengua de Vaca” which was deadly too and supposedly contained a mixture of blackpowder and nitroglycerin.
