FIRMWARE V2.0 | PANASONIC LUMIX S1 the best DSLM in 2021? | 6K OPEN GATE, PRORES RAW| FEATURE REVIEW

The Panasonic Lumix S1 was released 2 years ago and has recently got a firmware update V2.0 that brought a lot of new features to the camera like internal 6K recording, 6K ProRes RAW over HDMI and anamorphic 4K. In this video I take a closer look at the new features and compare the internal 6K modes to the 4K recording modes and compare the feature lst to the Lumix S1H and S5.

Does the S1 have the luminance spot meter like the S1h and GH6? I love the idea of dragging that box to specific parts of the image to check exposure!

I would have loved it if they had included onscreen aspect ratio guides- so for example when we film, it would help you compose the footage

Yeah you are right, those are definitely a feature I miss on the S1.

Did you ever use the 6k with a greenscreen? I love the fact that its 10 bit but not to keen though on the 4-2-0 color space

thank you for the great review Florian. One question. While recording internally to the new 6k modes, is the Hdmi output working properly? Are you able to preview your image on an external HDMI monitor?

Glad it was helpful! Yes I tried it with a field monitor and directly into obs with a stream stick and during recording I always got an image on the cameras live view and on the external screen. No matter which mode.

Hi, I loved your video and the detailed information. I hope you can help me with a question that is killing me. If you had to choose between the S5 or the S1 both with the ninja V atom (to record both professional video and photo), which one would you choose? Thank you so much.

Thanks! I would say it depends what your specific needs are. if you like the smaller form factor or a flippy screen is really important to you and 6K in general doesn't matter, I'd say the S5 is a better choice. If you want to use 6K or like the more solid heavier body or really want the best Ibis and don't care about the flippy screen then the S1 might be a better choice. And also if you don't want the 4K 10bit 30 minute recording limit the S1 is the one to go. But all in all due to the same sensor, the image you will get from both cameras is nearly identical. Oh and by the way both cams will output braw to the bm video assist.

Cooler Blick auf den Patscherkofel! Wahnsinns-Infos in 10 Minuten gepackt! Wow! Ich hab die S1 grad erst erstanden inkl. Upgrade-Key, aber seltsamer Weise sind alle Auflösungen, höher als 4K, im Menü grau und nicht wählbar. Ich komme nicht drauf weshalb? Hast du eine Idee? lg nach Innsbruck!

Danke! :) Ist auch schon die FW 2 installiert? Das vlog Upgrade alleine schaltet nur log etc frei, das kann aber auch auf einer 1.x fw laufen. Am besten in den settings der S1 nachschauen.

You can display your shutter speed in seconds or as shutter angle. I'm not sure if I got your question; what do you mean by "is "shutter angle" just a readout/display?"

If I understood your question right; you just can just transfer your files from your sd card to your pc and inport it into all the major nles like premiere, davinci or final cut.

Yes you can record up 180fps in FHD, but it is limited to 8bit only.

Due to the fact that it is still 200mbits, you don't need very expensive cards. I usually use the SanDisk extreme V30 with 170mbits or the lexar 1667x with V60 with 250mbits. They both work quite well.

@@florian.augustus.alexander Trotzdem erfreulich, was die S1 nach dem Upgrade alles mitbringt. Schaue öfters wegen der S5. Da wäre das V-LOG schon integriert. Bin schon neugierig, was Panasonic noch so alles auf dem Markt bringen wird. Hoffentlich keine Handys fürs Filmen ;-)

​@@castielvargastv7931 Habe nur 99 Euro für meine Kamera für den V-LOG-Schlüssel bezahlt, und das war schon zu viel ;-) Abgesehen davon, ist es eine Ansichtssache, weil viele Kameras so ein Profil bereits integriert haben. Zumindest war es vom Hersteller bei der S5 schon einmal eine gute Idee, es kostenlos zur Verfügung zu stellen. Aber wenn man die S1 schon hat und all die Möglichkeiten nutzen möchte, würde ich das wahrscheinlich auch investieren.

Nice video, don’t think the S1 can compete with the $1300 Pocket 4k or 6k. Panasonic may need to drop the picture mode and focus on video. They are really beating Sony or Canon with pictures, but with the low pass filter the video recordings are really nice! But now with the low price of Pocket cameras, Panasonic is in a weird space. Time to make some changes because they aren’t particularly better than anyone and the Fujifilm cameras shoot internal 10 bit even though it’s only 4.2.0 it’s still more than enough. I hate to see Panasonic go out like this by they are beating a dead horse at this point.

It's true that Panasonic is in a weird place right now. And yes I definitly agree with you that the S1 can't compete with the BM Pockets (especially because of BRAW) I wouldn't count the BMs as typical dslm cameras (altough they technically are xD) But sometimes I just prefer shooting with the S1/S5 instead of the Pocket cameras. The weather sealing, ibis, FF, photography options and longer lasting internal batterys just make it a very handy overall run & gun package imo. And I really love what you are getting for that price. But yeah there are still things I really don't like about that cam and Panasonic in general like the af and the L mount for example.

well the s1 has ibis and a full frame sensor and yes... much better autofocus than any blackmagic camera, bm has no continous af at all.. case closed.😂

Nah. Bmpcc is trash except for the internal codecs. It's not even the battery, it's the build quality. ive seen lots of cases where they fry the camera cos they had to power that camera thru something due to the trash battery. Everyone talking about image quality when u can just slap some filter n vintage glasses on the lumix, grade, n make it as smooth as ur varicam.
