Thanks a lot ! S1 is a small S1H now , as owner of two S1H and compared S1 there is of course a gap between them in video Colors modes and V Gamut power handling of this major upgrade.. S1H is for serious DP’s but the S1 is already very cool for intermediate job and short recordings ! Even on Atomos the Raw signal is more powerful on the S1H Panasonic told us last months ..
@TheBudgetFilmmaker3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for you comment! I am curious, since you have both cameras: How do the color modes differ? I mean, both share the same sensor, and V-Log is standardised (Ninja V also shows V-Gamut as color space). Are there more settings you can change on the S1H that have an impact on the recorded image? I honestly don't know since I don't have an S1H. I thought the biggest difference IQ-wise is the missing OLPF in the S1 that could result in moire, but I will test if that's the case. The colorful artifacts in the trees would suggest that. Other than the things above and the missing All-I there doesn't seem to be a difference in terms of recording modes and image quality, right?

@@TheBudgetFilmmaker indeed Joe ! In fact , yes there are some extra features in the new S1H space menus and the Raw signals a bit more optimised so as BRaw now for Blackmagic s Video assist 12G to get original Blackmagic Raw conversation threw the external Rec.. Thanks for replying! Would love too see how big of an impact those settings really are. Yes, Braw is great, I agree, but if we would get WB and ISO control in Premiere I would be happy enough. 😁 The severe price gap doesn't feel as justified since the update. But I think it's awesome from Panasonic to keep the S1 one of the best price-performance ratio cameras on the market. The S1H has it's value of course, but most shooters can spare some change by choosing the S1.

Love this Camera. It has been tricky finding the right settings since you have to go against convention (shutter speeds, etc) . But this baby can actually shoot video of the northern lights and space stuff at 24fps with more detail than the Sony a7sii. (Slightly more noise correction) Of course this working with an 20mm f1.4 at the highest native ISO. If you are more into storm and night-astro videography/photography and all manual, the S1,S1H got to be the one of the best out there in the prosumer price range with this sensor size.

Excuse me if I'm a little bit off topic but I have noted in your video that even your camera shows up PAL and NTSC fps. I didn't found a way to hide NTSC fps (on my GH5S it exists, instead). Perhaps this is something that we can't change due to a specific firmware for Europe, because I know that some S1 has the voice into the menu for switching PAL/NTCS system. Of course this is not a big issue, but seeing the modes that I don't want to use bothers me a little bit.
@TheBudgetFilmmaker3 жыл бұрын
Yes I know. On the GH5 you have to switch region and turn your camera off and on again. Not with the S1, where all the formats are displayed at once. I also don't like that, since I have no use for the NTSC formats. I think that we can't do anything about it, since many people wanted Panasonic to make the switch easier. I guess Panasonic listened and went ahead with this solution.

@TheBudgetFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I normally use my Prograde V60 256GB cards that do the job perfectly well. Those are my go-to cards that handle the 5.9K mode and 4K/50p with ease. I would recommend them any day. Since all the High-Res modes on the S1 are 200MBit/s, V30 cards should be able to work with that (It's the All-I mode with 400MBit/s with which the V30 cards struggle), but I never did an in-depth test. I just recorded a one minute test clip on a V30 card, no problem with that. But I don't know for longer recording times.

Hi Joe I just found your video. I am VERY close to changing my GH5 over to S1 or S1H (the GH6 doesn't impress me enough)... I am researching the depths of the internet to see if the S1 is enough for me or if I should keep saving for S1H. It seems the biggest difference is that the S1 lacks All-I ... but I am not experienced enough to truly know the difference and what that means. Without All-I, does that simply mean lower quality footage? Or does it mean bigger file sizes? Or slower processing time on my Mac/Premiere Pro? Thank you!
@TheBudgetFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
Bigger files, a tiny bit bettet quality and easier editing. I personally never use Alli on my GH5, so I don't really care about that. Whats nicer on the S1H is no recording limit, no moire because of AA filter and more videocentric controls.

Why is nobody mentioning the fact that the S-1 doesn't give you the option for recording in All-Intra but only Long-GOP which makes the footage really hard to handle for any software? I mean as soon as you're trying to edit more than two clips, even a powerful computer will fail to deliver a smooth playback. I think this makes the camera useless for any professional filmmaker.
@TheBudgetFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
It's true that Long-GOP is pretty hard on hardware, but my not-state-of-the-art PC can handle a couple of files for shoter videos quite well, and for bigger projects I just use a proxy workflow. It only takes a bit of time to transcode and I can switch back to the originals when I start color grading. Works perfect for me. All-I is nice for sure, but I have so many projects and since I keep the footage (+redundancy) it's just so much more space saved. Even now on the GH6 I only use Long-GOP, albeit it has even better codec options than the S1H. I totally get your point. If you don't like proxies and don't have a benchmark PC, the S1H serves you better with it's All-I option. But to say that the S1 is useless for professionals is a bit overexaggerated in my opinion.
