Join two 600cc Kei car engines to make a 1.2-liter V6 that can scream its head off at 8000 RPM all day, and use some of those very powerful eBike hub motors to build a triple motor (torque vectoring in the front, integrated starter and generator in the rear) performance hybrid system. Sequential automated transmission hacked together from a motorcycle to finish it off. Lithium ion batteries were way more expensive when the EV1 came out. The car still ended up being valued around $48K even after using the cheaper batteries and GM had so little confidence in it they only allowed leasing. I strongly believe they scrapped them because the realized the batteries could result in a hydrogen explosion in someone's home if they charged in their garage which it openly stated to never do. And the XL1 was never going to get a consumer model because these conglomerates don't like making niche products. A consumer car with high fuel economy would be great for the environment and our reliance on gas, but people don't actively buy such cars. The Prius for example had continued to be a punching bag by everyone since it's inception. Hell Toyota even realized this and gave it a bigger engine and lowered increased the aerodynamic drag just to make it look cool and drive faster. They want to make cars anyone would buy which is why many have even stopped selling coupes and sedans. It's easier to push someone up to a bigger car than encourage people to try a smaller car.

There are a couple failure modes, can also fold a rocker arm, can also launch the rocker stud out of the head as it's just pressed into the head, not threaded. Never heard of them spinning since the classic small block Chevy, they're keyed at the top with a guide that goes all the way around the outer structure that doesn't collapse keeping them from spinning. That guide could break I suppose, it is plastic, but I would think that would be from a seized roller flattening out the cam letting it go low enough in the bore to escape the guide, spin and break the guide off

Diesel engines are some of the most efficient engines ever made. Diesel fuel used to be cheap, really cheap. If the Omega car was made 40 years ago, it would be the stuff of legend(That worked). The biggest problem with today, is all of the endless regulations you have to follow. Written not by Senator Friendly's staff, but some nameless jerk. Sittin on a buttplug sportin an attitude. Thinking he/they/it/whatever knows better than all of us. It's too bad we don't live in the same state Casey. Besides being a car guy, I'm a mad Industrial Designer as well. I used to have your energy, but as I'm sure you can understand. Life got to me as well. But the drive is still there.

So cool to see! Hope to see another video letting us know what you would change. I’m also curious if you could do a full breakdown of the car now. I love your videos and the fact that you have shone a bright light on the automobile industry, cars are like cell phones now, they are only good for a short time and then not worth fixing. Last, I really appreciate that you actually read these and sometimes respond, if I’m out of line requesting a video so be it, won’t hurt my feelings. Good luck to this project and any others you’re involved in!

Comparing it to a Tesla is Apple's and oranges. You're driving a fiberglass go-kart. While a Tesla and the Corvette have a ton of safety features and airbags to increase crash survival. Your car is probably fatal at 35 mph. You're mostly correct about lack of design philosophy. But there are a few exceptions like the Aptera EV. Both super light and safe. And far more environmentally and economically sound.

Nope and nope.
@vitordelima4 ай бұрын
Still it's a solid starting point and it can be improved further to keep the weight and final cost low if developed into a proper product.
@colinbowman88164 ай бұрын
Aptera shell may not break in a 35mph impact. But a light car is still going to get bounced violently in a crash with any modern 5000 lb beast. It's not gonna be pretty.
@vitordelima4 ай бұрын
@@colinbowman8816 Composite materials can be tweaked to absorb a lot of impact compared to regular metal car bodies. Also most revelant markets worldwide don't use large cars, this is common only in North America.
@colinbowman88164 ай бұрын
@@vitordelima true, a good crash structure, like a F1 nose is supposed to shed something like 5x the energy of a conventional metallic structure of the same weight iirc. That requires tons of testing to make. But basic physics says that if a 1500lb car and a 5000lb car have an inelastic head on crash, @ 40mph, the final mass of both cars ends up travelling 21.5 mph in the direction the heavier car was going... so one car saw a 18mph change, the other 61.5mph. The energy absorbtion needs to be much better in the lighter car, or the occupants are much more likely to be injured.

I'm glad to see this car still matters. I remember it from a while ago, and you playing it close to the vest over, what you said was, IP concerns. Hope you got that sorted out and we can all benefit from the technology.
@robertfischer58934 ай бұрын
Don't the engineers responsible for the powertrain deserve most of the credit here? Seems like they did most of the heavy lifting when you consider it's reasonable to expect similar performance from any relatively aerodynamic chassis that's void of modern crash safety features, creature comforts, adherence to emissions regulations, pedestrian safety regs, practical daily use, etc. etc. etc.

Nope
@robertfischer58934 ай бұрын
@@CaseyPutsch Yeah ok, bro. Use a comparable gasoline engine to test how much novel material science is responsible for fuel efficiency (or lack thereof). Add enough safety equipment to satisfy the most basic requirements and then explain to everyone why the car gets 40mpg like EVERY OTHER CAR. JAGOFF

It's been truly incredible watching these videos and seeing it all come together. This is a monumental accomplishment, and I can't wait to see what you do from here! I currently build bespoke firearms and such and one day plan to do some custom car builds. Your channel is a huge inspiration in making me realize anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Keep it up! Best regards from a fellow Ohioan!

Congratulations, speedy little car. More testing is going to be interesting. Some hopefully helpful criticism. Regarding videos having spoilers I personally don't like them, didn't want to know the times beforehand or anything like that. Obviously one can skip them with enough foreknowledge but there they caught me unprepared. I like what you're doing and would offer whatever assistance I could were I in the U.S. I also believe in doing things correctly, and that's an understatement. Happy spannering

Several questions for OC.V2, roughly in order of presumed difficulty(edited in to avoid auto-yeet): >Better (for performance) tires? >Bugatti Tourbillion style steering wheel/cluster placement? >De-Dion rear axle with Satchell Link and inboard brakes? >Front steering rack for best feel with 50-60 degrees of angle (one way) and enough lock-to-lock rotation to equate back to a 10:1-12:1 ratio(bout a 1200-degree rack)? >V6 TDI for more power and better sound? >Bladed seating position previously mentioned with customizable shifter placement? >Roof cutouts on doors for even easier ingress/egress? >A larger 3-seat version with a center driver and passengers offset the same as the bladed 2-seat idea so the driver's seat can slide over (like that one modded 911 or w/e)? >Making the transverse equivalent to the ZF 8-speed, or if not, running an actual ZF8 Countach style (mid/rear long, trans forward, V-drive RWD) and pairing it with a Turbolamik (or equivalent) trans controller to have the ultimate in transmission flexibility between both automatic and manual shifting incl with or without clutch and H-pattern or sequential? >Barring the above, how about simply a dog box H-pattern for maximum spirited driving fun of the true enthusiast? Also, I recognize that if you make a larger version, it'll probably just be 4 seats since that won't have a much larger cockpit or footprint than a 3-seat version, anyway, and would literally be 1/3rd more practical than the 3-seat is. Like, the bladed 2-seat is genuinely a good optimization, but the offset 3-seat is really just for dudes like me who want a budget Mclaren F1/Speedtail/T.50 that's slightly easier to get in and out of due to the horizontal slider. And TBH, the bladed 2-seat will probably get you close enough to the center since each seat would be roughly 2 inches overlapped on the centerline of the car. BTW, if it wasn't clear, as long as you're pairing the bladed pos (driver still on left) with a left side shifter, you could probably do away with that side's door entirely and just have a single door system. IDK if that'd make roll-down windows on the port side easier or not, but I digress.

SHARE SHARE SHARE!!! This is a great way to show that the current auto industry is closer to toy manufactures than true mechanical engineers. US colleges can't teach engineering because the good engineers get jobs that they can't talk about and they clearly don't seem to minds. The Viper is a monster, had a 97 about 5 years ago and we would use that car as a measuring stick for our new builds or buys. Vipers hurts ego's for sure, even my own.....

Originally came for the Batmobile however many years ago & stayed for the King Zero, Omega Car, Lykan Hypersport, the unfortunate time you learned about Benz SBC braking system (the hard way), & well, most everything else really. The Omega Car looks & feels like a childhood dream of mine (also a child of the early 80's) & also a dream of what artistry, creativity, & passion truly are when paired with the automotive realm. Swing by Jay Leno's garage & show him what you got!! Hahaha but seriously, I do hope this story can go as far as humanly possible. More power to ya ✌️🤘

I only started watching you TODAY and I want this car in my driveway. I'm at the cusp where I'm thinking of getting a tesla because it would be much cheaper than driving or even riding my motorcycle to work on the daily. However, I still like the sound motors make, I still want to DRIVE my car with a stickshift and the omega car is even RWD! Which I love. I really hope you start a patreon or go fund me or whatever, to make this car really compete against everyone, I'd line up and support you all the way.
