I vividly remember watching this when it first aired. Her name wasn't even in the opening credits that week, to avoid spoiling the joke. I was so caught off guard that at first I thought someone was really blowing a set on national TV. When I realized what she was doing, I was in awe. The fearlessness you must need to have that be your introduction to a brand new audience is beyond my comprehension.

The fact that she pulled off a stand up bit without delivering any jokes in a traditional sense is so amazing to me. After all these years this still sticks with me.

You guys won't believe me, but I actually met Crista in 2006 at a school site that I worked at the time. I couldn't believe it was her when she walked in one night and when I was introduced to her she was shocked that I was the only person that recognized her.When MAD TV was off for the summer, she actually worked as a substitute teacher for ESL! She was so nice that she invited me to the Groundlings to see the cast of MAD TV do their act during the summer. She was such a sweetheart.

This is similar to Kaufmann, but he had a different goal in mind. He *meant* to alienate his audience by being unfunny. Discomfort was the staple of his act. His anti-comedy brought attention to the effort, or non-effort, of making people laugh. Flanagan, on the other hand, is doing the opposite: she actually wins the audience's sympathy with her ineptness. It's initially uncomfortable, but we pull for her to make us laugh. And by the end, when she's in tears, we feel for her. Empathy is key.

For several years MADtv was kicking SNL's ass, but because Fox didn't own MADtv they didn't care about its future and barely advertised it. Eventually, the main cast left so the final episodes were terrible. The company that owns MADtv won't even bother to release most seasons so instead they just threw some of the best episodes in a vault somewhere to rot. MADtv's actors were notoriously underpaid considering how talented they were. Also, because they were willing to be politically incorrect the actors were treated like outcasts in showbiz and effectively blacklisted. Despite creating great characters that still get quoted to this day, it was difficult for many to find work. Comedic geniuses like Will Sasso and Bobby Lee never landed big deals in mainstream shows/sitcoms and only just recently have found limited success because of podcasts. Legends deserving of respect like Frank Caliendo, Ike Barinholtz, Aries Spears, Pat Kilbane, Nicole Sullivan, Debra Wilson, Crista Flanagan, Mo Collins, Stephanie Weir, and Michael McDonald seemingly evaporated only to occasionally show up in random projects as minor characters or in standup. Others did voice work like Phil Lamarr and Alex Borstein, but Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele were the only ones to really make it big. I believe it's because they took their sketch comedy experience to create a spiritual successor to MADtv in the form of their show Key & Peele. SNL will sometimes have a standout comedian(Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig,Andy Samberg), but it relies too much on the prestige of guests who bring viewership because of name recognition, and sometimes these guests are funnier than the main cast(Louis CK). It still rides on the nostalgia of the Chris Farley/Adam Sandler golden years and gets too involved in politics. Its political skits simply aren't funny and often come off as material that was forced in by left wing elitists. However, since it has so many connections in showbiz it will never fail no matter how many people agree that it's terrible. A lot of SNL alumni get chances in projects they don't even deserve(The all-female Ghostbusters disaster). Even when talking about shows like 30 Rock and Parks And Recreation that deserve success, it's not exactly an accident that their main roles were populated with SNL alumni like Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Amy Poehler. They get the main spotlight while outcasts like Mo Collins just get a few appearances as a side character in Parks And Recreation, but that sort of tribal favoritism is the cruel politics of the business. Fun Fact: Crista Flanagan did nudes for Playboy, and Mo Collins has leaked nudes online. Check em out if you want. :)
@Blueguitar0075 жыл бұрын
Why does everyone say "left wing elitist" when Republicans are the money grabbing bitches that whore the country out to businesses? For real..Trump? So called "billionaire" and many Dems get payed scale for trying to get poor ppl more of a life. I say Republicans are "Elitists" and they are the ones at the country club (Mara Lago for one). Of course this isn't a stead-fast rule but still...Reps are the Money Bags.
