Blasphemy. No one insults the Rambo knife. Cheap knockoffs helped many a young man slice open their Capri Sun packages when they couldn't get that Damn Little STRAW INTO THE FREAKING PACKAGE! JUST STAB THE STRAW IN MY...Sorry, bad memories... First Blood started the "Hero must have a special knife craze" in action movies/TV in the '80s. Plus, Rambo being a Green Beret, wouldn't carry your run of the mill, 5 and Dime store, "Generic" hunting knife that breaks or rusts at the drop of a grenade. A lot of soldiers would buy custom knives to take with them because they were usually better than Government Issue (except for the Ka-bar knife issued first by the Marines in WW2). And Jimmy Lile, maker of the First Blood 1 & 2 knives, was one of the more popular (his other designs, not the Rambo Knife specifically) custom knife makers of that time. Plus, it just looked so damn cool...

I find the Rambo series as a whole to be a surprisingly emotional and cathartic experience. The first one is obviously the most respectable, while they get increasingly absurd after that. But you definitely do feel John Rambo's pain and frustration, and want to see him conquer his enemies. I agree with you that Stallone displayed his best acting at the end of First Blood. Supposedly he did pretty well again years later in Copland, but I've never seen it.

First Blood is a great movie. It not just reflects on the Vietnam war and PTSD it also reflects on bullying. Sylvester Stallone should had got an Oscar for the movie. His acting in it was really good especially the scenes when he freaks out when he has a PTSD triggered flashback of being tortured in Vietnam and when he cries talking about the death of his friend Joey. You feel sorry for poor Rambo. Teasle decides to arrest him for vagrancy and being in possession of a concealed weapon because Rambo refused to leave town. Galt and the other cops brutalized and bullied him. They did not give a damn if Rambo was a war hero and it didn't occur to them something was wrong with him and that he was mentally unstable. Rambo gets blamed for Galt's death. They weren't there and they didn't witness Galt attempting to kill Rambo and acting against Teasle's orders and they jumped to conclusions that Rambo killed him. In the film, Col. Trautman is very much on Teasle's side. Richard Crenna was perfectly cast as Rambo's mentor and former commanding officer and he did a good job. When Rambo is crying, if you look closely, Richard Crenna looks as if he's struggling not to cry himself. I understand why they had to change the ending, it would had been real depressing if Rambo committed suicide at the end of the movie. In the novel, Rambo did die. For me, First Blood was Stallone's best movie. It's my favorite of all the Rambo movies. I can relate to the film because I've been bullied myself and I now have a better understand of PTSD. The reason why those cops abused Rambo is because they had nothing better to do.

some of the points you seem to not discuss or gloss over is that the core premise is that he's hunting down people who are supposed to be on his side, that First BLood is inherently anti-war, it's also one of the most subversive movies ever made. In the second movie Rambo is betrayed not by the Government, but by specific politicians. In the first movie, we see that Rambo is betrayed by his country, not just by the police, but that his last connection his friend was killed by Agent Orange, taken by the hands of his own government. First blood is a critical masterpiece IMO, not just a "Good Action movie".

I actually sort of feel bad for the sheriff. Yeah, he's a jerk, but in the book, they explain he doesn't like Rambo because the sheriff is a Korean vet who is upset that no Korean vets received nearly as much public support or sympathy as Vietnam vets. I completely agree with your findings on this. First Blood is my favourite of the Rambo movies for exactly the reason that for all of the violence it's actually pretty light on death, and the one death is almost self-inflicted in its circumstances. I think if you consider Rambo as not actually wanting to kill anyone his motivations when doing things like shooting out the police station make more sense, he's making a point, not actually trying to kill anyone at that point. Plus he has the whole Predator style "honor kills must be made face to face with a blade" thing going on. Looking forward to more reviews!

Of all the Rambo movies, I find First Blood to be the most emotionally-driven and in depth. Stallone's emotional speech at the end of the movie really hits hard when you think about what Vietnam veterans went through at that time. While parts 2 and 3 were fun, guilty- pleasure action flicks, they took away what made the main character John Rambo in the original so compelling and well-written. As far as Stallone movies go, I think I might like First Blood slightly better than the original Rocky, mainly because I find it's story more emotionally impactful compared the original Rocky, but that's purely subjective.

This movie illustrates why we should replace police with people's militias. A people's militia would have never messed with Rambo. In fact, Rambo would have welcomed into a people's militia with open arms and would have likely risen the ranks rapidly. 7:25 In an emergency, he can throw the pommel to end his opponent rightly. 10:46 Fun fact: The Vietnam War-era OD green US officer's rain coat (which is cut like a classic British-style belted trench coat) worn by Richard Crenna is the same type that was worn by Michael Biehn in the first half of 'The Terminator'. *Note:* Crenna is also wearing that beret correctly (insignia over left eye, draped material over right ear). 13:12 Something that's always irked me about movies. No one ever uses their sights unless they're a sniper. Sly even talks about how ridiculous it is to fire an M-60E3 one-handed from the hip in the commentary to the second movie (and maybe also the third). In the third movie, Trautman uses an AMD-65, leaves the stock folded, and never aims. 20:17 I had one of those back in the early '90s.

Sort of reminds me of the remake of "Walking Tall" with Dwanye Johnson. Great flick, both of them.

I showed this to my ex girlfriend that thought Rambo 2 was a corny action film. I told her it was about a man that simply wanted lunch and was tormented for it. She thought I was joking and watched it. She was amazed that I was correct and loved it! This is the best of the series!

Absolute masterpiece. It got more silly in the sequels but the first one was a FILM. Awesome score too.

Of all the Rambo flicks, this is the deepest. With the John Rambo from 2015? in a close second

Hey Decker can we expect a review for Cliffhanger? It's one of the better Stallone action films in my opinion.

By the way Decker I've had that knife it's not needle and thread that's fishing line and fishing hook however yeah they think he replaced it with an actual needle maybe I meat all my yeah most of the time and it's just fishing line Which arguably would be better

As rambo while being fairly generic himself ended up so unique i think the knife is a good thing

Good spot, I hated that they left Teasle's real motives out.

It's believed in certain situations less naturally hostile animals could exhibit drastically different behavior... This isn't one of those lol.. though idk if the same goes for bats

The reason the Sheriff told Rambo that "wearing that flag looking the way you do" could get him in trouble is because he doesn't think he's a veteran. The reason the Sheriff thinks this is because of Rambo's long hair. I know this sounds crazy but hear me out: Back in the 1960's and 1970's some hippies would dress in army fatigues to raise awareness about the war. You see back in the 1960's and even in the 1970's for the most the only men that had long hair were hippies and they were actually harassed for it. So when a long haired hippie would go walking around dressed up like a solider it was their way of thumbing their nose at the establishment.
