Licensed Troubleshooter: The Guns of James Bond is live on Kickstarter now - check it out for lots of super cool exclusive options!
Last week Tom and I did a BUG match with 4 different iconic James Bond pistols - but the Walther P99 was conspicuously absent. Personally delivered to Pierce Brosnan on the set of "Tomorrow Never Dies" by the president of Walther, the P99 was put to good use in that film. So today, I'm taking a first-generation P99 like Bond's out to the BackUp Gun match!

The point of it being a Back Up Gun shoot is that you start with a primary then transition off hand to the back up mid course. These are just videos of you running older guns through a ghetto course.

I use the p99qnl on the daily. It is the service pistol for the dutch police. And its basically the p99 but with some mods specifically for the dutch police. Its a very nice platform and not to bad on accuracy.

I'd completely forgotten it made its debut in Tomorrow Never Dies. What a strange film that was. Great pre-titles sequence, cool remote-controlled BMW, Michelle Yeoh. But Jonathan Pryce as a villain who did some terrible kung-fu. Possibly the first film with GPS spoofing as a plot point.

I bought the Walther P99 in 2000; it was my first 9mm. I liked the trigger, the "second strike" capability, and thought the adjustable back straps were revolutionary. I kept this handgun until 2020 when my daughter turned 21... I allowed her to pick any handgun from my collection for her to have as a her first pistol and she picked the Walther P99. I am confident she is well protected with it in her possession.

I got mine in 2005, also my first pistol. I got the OD Green one and still have it today. I don't really shoot anymore and don't carry, but it is really fantastic overall. Ian's right about the trigger though, and it can take time to get used to, however, once you do, it is still my favorite pistol. Sure, there are others that may be better for which ever reason, but for me... it's just cool, feels great in the hand, easy to shoot, rather accurate if taken care of, and an all around great gun.

I know this gun is far from forgotten thanks to the Bond franchise but I would love an episode about it! I bought a P99 in .40 S&W in 2000 at a gun show in Georgia after having read reviews of it in various shooting magazines. They were very uncommon then and hard to find. I have since carried it as my EDC pretty regularly, shot in IDPA competitions with it and of all the pistols I own, it remains my favorite. I even bought a S&W99 upper for it in 9mm so I had a choice of calibers (yes, it works perfectly). From an ergonomic viewpoint it is top of the line, and since I have fairly short fingers, the ambi paddle mag release is perfect for me. The only real takeaway is the proprietary rail which makes it impossible to mount any sort of conventional light on it. It was way ahead of its time and the fact that they just discontinued production of the P99 after 25 years is a testament to how well it has stood up against more modern and popular designs.

Actually, I think the MR9 was the only P99 derivative (if it can be called that, it's just a P99 dressed a bit differently) that didn't look too bad. The more Walther changed the P99, or came out with a new name, PPQ, PDP, what have you, it never measured up to the original. The only part I wish the original had, was a Pic rail. So the MR9, though didn't look exactly like the first edition, with the picatinny rail it kind of made up for it :)

P99as... the 'next' iteration of this, is my EDC and still earned its place as my EDC...only now I dont carry...(cos I now work in Neu Jermany), so it sits in the night-stand. I own 3-- 2 full-size and 1 compact (asc), bought the 3rd when I felt they might sunset the pistol when they brought out the PPQv2. Crazy accurate pistol. Maybe I'm used to it but it is one of the most accurate and easy to shoot pistols I own. Only deficiency is that I do wish it had much more aggressivel stippling. Seems to be the natue/characteristic of the polymer used in construction, because IMO, the PPQ also had this issue. Fixed with grip tape. Fixed finally with the PDP. That's a whole lotta years... '"Gods own" mag release... Literally the best magazine release in the whole damned galaxy! STILL!!! I HATE that Walther moved away from it because of the American zealots, but I understand (sales). Phenomenal trigger. DA/SA, with that smooth and safe first pull, then one of the best short-reset SA trigger actions I have. 2nd to Sig's SA trigger reset, which itself is second to a revolvers SA which is second to the SA of a 1911.

In Nov. 2022 I took my .40 P99c to the the three day beginners pistol class at Thunder Ranch in Oregon. On the last day the recoil spring assembly broke somehow and shot itself out the front of the gun. Both springs, a sheared collar of some sort, and some sort of plug were left but the “guide rod” was gone in the snow somewhere behind my target. Thankfully, there is no shortage of guns or kindness at Thunder Ranch and Heidi let me borrow one of her Glocks for the remainder of that last day. “Its supposed to be a service gun!” I said, having recently been to Germany and seeing all the Police sporting one on their hip. “Maybe but now you dont have a gun”, was what I heard back 😂 I got home and emailed Walther and they pretty much said “yeah that can happen sometimes with use”. Well, this wasnt a “hardly used” gun, but it definitely wasnt hard-used gun either. And its not like the spring just got weaker where i could have just re-racked the slide, or pressed the slide forward. It straight up died in my hands. Good thing it wasnt a real scenario. After the very non-apologetic exchange and getting a free replacement spring, I cleaned and oiled the hell out of it, put it in storage and have not shot it since. Just before Thunder Ranch I had went and bought a full size HK USP which is now my EDC, and with the LEM trigger, its basically the same trigger function as the “Anti Stress” trigger on the P99. I have not looked back. I am aware it was a compact .40 model of an originally full-size 9mm design, but I dont think its too much to ask to not have any catastrophic failures from simple use in a mass produced, “service” based design, from one of the worlds most reputable manufacturers. It could have also been a lemon, sure, but my trust was shaken and the Walther rep literally did nothing to indicate anything strange about the scenario. I finally had some experience relevant to a gun in one of your videos and felt the need to share. Thanks for the great work, Ian! P.S. if you ever want to borrow my .44 LAR Grizzly for a match or even just for fun, just let me know👍

So, what is the point of DA/SA on a striker pistol? With hammer-fire I've heard the safety advantage of while holstering of being able to thumb the hammer so it cannot go off even if the trigger were to snag an obstruction on the way in, which doesn't appear to be something you can do on this. I have seen Glocks with the "Safety Control" plate on the back to allow you to do similar. Does this system do that? Or is it just so you have a longer first pull to prevent ND's under stress from martial use of the gun?

The P99AS is possibly the most underrated striker-fired gun ever made. Walther deserve a lot of credit for factory guns with excellent triggers, unlike virtually every other polymer-framed duty gun out there.

All these James Bond references, and nothing about The Matrix? Its appearance is rather brief from what I remember, but Morpheus has one in Reloaded, when confronting Smith in the hallway of doors. Smith to Neo: "I want what you want - I want EVERYTHING..." Morpheus to Smith, aiming a P99 at them: "Would that include a bullet from this gun?"

This is the standard issue pistol for Polish Police, it's made under license by Radom. Walther P99, FN FNX, Beretta Px4, H&K P30 are kinda the swan's song of SA/DA pistols

Too bad that Bond has returned to PPK. While it's iconic, it's not very useful anymore. P99 was a perfect replacement

That's for posting, I *own* a version of this, they made three different versions, to my knowledge(ignoring the different calibers). There's a .22LR, 9mm/.40SW(IIRC) and an AIR PISTOL version. That's the one that I have, it's been years since I fired the .22LR or 9/40 versions, but I remember the trigger being similar. It DOES take some getting used to. I do enjoy the decocker aspect of it, and the primary magazine release is really handy with it being ambidextrous on the trigger guard. I've always wanted to find one, so I'm glad you did a video on it, it just reinforces that I could use it, I just would have to make it my primary pistol to stay up with the trigger pull.

Never understood why they made the anti-stress trigger as it's absolutely horrible (same as Daewoo's triple action). Having the gun be da/sa only would have been better IMHO. Also, why did Walther reduce magazine capacity from 16 to 15? With 16 rounds there was a justification for being larger than a Glock 19, but with 15, it's just oversized compared to the Austrian competition.

As a huge Walther fan and someone who owns the P99AS, PPQM2 and PDP compact the P99 anti stress trigger is very unique but decent once you learn it. The best out of the box striker fired trigger is the PDP with the PPQ just a squeak behind. All 3 of them are pretty much the same gun and the barrels (and slides for the most part) interchange between the 3. Walther handguns are incredibly high quality and extremely reliable. At least the ones made by Carl Walther in Ulm are. Some others made by Umarex but branded as Walther are suspect.

That looked like your best score for a BUG match, if you had a little more time with it, you'd probably score even higher. P99 definitely cemented a place in my bucket list of handguns to buy.

I recently bought a first gen P99 off of an old woman selling off the guns after her husband passed away because she didn't like guns. I honestly bought it because it is Jet's gun from Cowboy Bebop and I'm looking to get Faye's Glock 30 Gen 2.5 and a correct unrailed slide safety mounted Jericho 941R for Spike.

I've always had a fondness for the P99 because I had a 007-branded P99 capgun as a kid, modeled after the early model P99 used by Brosnan's Bond. No idea where it went. Maybe I'll find an airsoft replica of that old pattern some day, it's such a unique style with the semi-futuristic hexagonal shapes with rounded edges.

I'm still upset that Walther decided to discontinue the P99. I would love to one day buy an AS ("Anti-Stress") gen 2 or a Final Edition, which really seems to be identical to the gen 2 other than the markings, and make it my carry gun if I ever return to the states. Maybe even see if I can find a factory "defense kit". I think it was a collaboration with S&W, which I find funny because there's also the elusive SW99, but the P99AS Defense Kit came with an extended ambi slide catch and night sights. If I can't get one of those, then maybe a regular gen 2 or Final Edition and have it send to Earl's Repair Service to see if they can throw an ambi slide catch and night sights on it for me.

Have the P99Q for 10 years now as a service pistol. Aesthetically it's more like the PPQ and doesn't have the SA/DA but since you have to push 4 safety's out of the way the trigger is 'meh' but benefits from the short reset. Still, in spite of that it is a great, mechanically very accurate and reliable pistol that beats the G17 I had before that.

I worked at a shooting range from 2002-06 where we had at least one P99 as a rental gun in .40 S&W. I remember that because of the spectacular KB it suffered one day. The barrel bent like a banana so it couldn't be removed from the slide and the frame had to be swept up and dumped into a Ziploc bag to send back to Walther. That's not a knock on Walther or the P99, the .40 just isn't a good cartridge for a rental range where it's going to get shot thousands of times per week.

That short reset makes this a bump firing beast. With a two handed grip squeezing the grip forward into your support hand trigger finger, the P99 can run through a mag at 1200 rounds per minute speed. Just sayin.
