I thought the Tower was a lava column? With the surrounding softer rock that made up the volcano eroded and making up the mound around it - cooling of the lave, causing the vertical “cracks”. Even being there in person, I don’t think you quite grasp how big it is until you see climbers on it. I have some photos from a visit that I realised you could see climbers on, they looked like ants

'Belle Fourche, French for "beautiful fork",[9] was named by French explorers from New France, referring to the confluence of what is now known as the Belle Fourche and Redwater Rivers and the Hay Creek. Beaver trappers worked these rivers until the mid-19th century, and Belle Fourche became a well known fur-trading rendezvous point. During and after the gold rush of 1876, farmers and ranchers settled in the fertile valleys, growing food for the miners and their animals. At the time, the open plains for hundred of miles in all directions were also being filled with huge herds of Texas and Kansas cattle. Towns sprang up to serve the ever-changing needs of the farmers and ranchers. In 1884, the Marquis de Mores, a French nobleman and contemporary of Theodore Roosevelt, established a stagecoach line between Medora, North Dakota and Deadwood, South Dakota. The Belle Fourche way station included a stage barn and a saloon.' ( Wikipedia)

Hi Chris, I've seen close encounters many times. A classis , like ET. Btw, the rock is a volcanic plug, left from when the soft sedimentary stone outer layer eroded away over millennia; from an extinct volcano. I knew what it was immediately I saw it, because Edinburgh castle is also built off of a volcanic plug. Us Scots know cunning things. Haha.

You should really get that roof vent screwed down and add bracing below. The vent likely resists flexing more than the roof, there is at least a difference, the result is a lot of force in the corner and the sealant will break.

The native Americans have a story on the Monument. They say Native American women fled up on the Devils Tower to get away from giant bears, and th3 sides of the tower show the bears scratching the tower trying to get up on top. I think 5hat is the way it goes. You should be able to google the beliefs.
