I love my 2024 Off-road Premium with KDSS, very good articulation. Use it most of the time for Overlanding, fully loaded with weight. Because of my needs bought it with rock rails, Wildpeak LT 265/70R17 tires. Added PowerBrake big brake kit in front, d-line on back. Added full length roof rack UPTOP overland, Bilstein 6112 1 inch lift and 8100 Bypass in rear, also diff breathers for rear diff and locker. Very happy, runs great on highway and off-road. Bilstein 8100 bypass and PowerBrakes, Wildpeak LT tires big improvement for my Overlanding. Land Cruiser could not hold all my gear and my 4Runner more off-road worthy at less price with upgrades. Plus proven reliability with no turbo engine. Recently was in the Flat Tops Colorado at high altitude and the 4Runner fully loaded did everything needed, power was good.

Very interesting segment. To your point regarding the price point and value thereof; Toyota is clearly aiming at a younger, viably employed audience/consumer, as the inflated prices are somewhat more offset by continuous (substantial) income. For most of us retired folk, living on fixed income, it is just not viable, as we just don't have the disposable income to absorb that kind of hit. But that's ok. They SHOULD be targeting the younger, employed market. For me, as much as I love some of the new whistles and bells, I suspect I'll see nothing new in the garage/driveway anytime soon (if ever). The 2013 160k Ford F150 5-liter V8 Lariat 4x4 and our 2019 60k Wrangler Rubicon JLU non-turbo 3.6-liter V6 will have to do. Fortunately, for the kind of driving and adventures we take, they're more than up to the task. As always, thanks so much for sharing. Steve

You mentioned turning radius and city handling I actually feel big in my Jeep WK2 in parking lots especially older parking lots with narrow parking spaces that aren’t very deep or the rows that are close together; it has a much better radius than that brand new Toyota and I’m pretty sure it’s actually better than my 21’ Ford bronco sport was or pretty darn close. We’re turning radius comes into play for me. Is on the trail where it’s tight towing my little 13 foot camper trailer, especially if I have to back up and make a multi point turn in tight areas. Interesting points though, and I love the juxtapose of your use case scenarios versus the other KZbinr.

We had to upgrade the tires, suspension, brakes, skid plates, rock rails and many other items on our 2014 Trail 4Runner. We towed our 19 foot travel trailer for the first time out West this past summer. It was adequate, just not good. Having more HP and Torque along with tow/haul mode and integrated brake controller it should tow much better. Updated tech, comfort and fuel economy will be a plus. Being more capable out of the box will be nice and having it under warranty can't hurt. I guess we will see about the durability and reliability. If anyone can do it Toyota can.

I’m not really a Toyota fanboy although I did drive aa new in the 90s Toyota pick up truck extended cab for about a year and a half for work. Looking at the specs of the land cruiser, 1950’s retro edition, my used 2020 Jeep grand Cherokee Trailhawk has more standard features has a larger fuel tank, longer range, more interior leg and shoulder room and the only metric that it is slightly down in stock form from the landcruiser is about 3 pounds per horsepower less than the Toyota. However, my Trailhawk has the optional supercharger so I have more HP. Now I got screwed by the dealer on my purchase so I owe more than my vehicles worth but it’s still far less than half of what that new Toyota cost. The trailhawks air suspension I has much better ground clearance. I’m just not seeing the advantage to upgrading to one of these newer vehicles, although I do appreciate as an automotive engineer and former industrial designer seeing the new vehicles develop I’ll stay with my 2020 Jeep WK2 Trailhawk. I could not find the rated payload of that Land Cruiser but I’m pretty sure that the Trailhawk probably has double payload, and the towing capacity is far more. On a sidenote, the newer versions of the grand Cherokee, both the 4Xe and the traditional V6 compare as well. Sadly, though I’m just not prepared to put that kind of money on a vehicle, no matter what manufacturer comes from.

Good review. However, I believe that this Land Cruiser is a foolish, compromised vehicle. In an overlander, where interior space is at a high premium, squandering it on a hybrid battery pack is a complete non-starter. To top it off, seats are non-removable, load floor isn't flat, and there are cupholders for a non-existent 3rd row. If all of that wasn't enough, we've got extortionate pricing. That's a hard pass in my book.

TRD Offroad is $50K and LC 1958 are $60K well equipped. Totally comparable and likely a more capable and reliable vehicle than the competition. The haters should take a look at what Ford, Jeep and Dodge etc are offering for $80-100K before commenting. The long term reliability of the I-Force Max are a question. I will say that 326hp and 465ft/lbs of Torque from the I-Force hybrid are better than nearly every powertrain offered by anyone else....until you get well north of $70K from anyone else. A Ford Raptor is $100K or Jeep Rubicon is $70K and you aren't getting Toyota reliability and 25MPG Hwy.

Any overlander who has had the pleasure of driving a vehicle with a split tailgate will never go back. I can’t believe this vehicle doesn’t have one. Total usability failure.

Or... Or... You have double the coverage in the rain😉

@ come on, that’s what an awning is for…. I’ll take a workbench, quick seat, space to unload the rear, change a diaper, make lunch, or load up a pack any day. That’s the beauty of the split tailgate. You literally can’t beat the usability unless you build one on the side of the vehicle. You may have a bigger cover in the rain, but if you sit on the bumper, you are a dirty sloppy mess. Totally defeats having the bigger cover if you ask me.

It’s fun to watch these well done videos. And appreciate this channel but I don’t expect any real scrutiny after getting this access. Have to wait on the smaller channels to give the real shakedowns or if you buy your own and do a full video

So when someone does too good of a job articulating their first impressions (including detailed criticisms) and produces a quality video... you decide to call them liars. 🤦 I guess I need to start getting paid by these companies if folks are just going to accuse us of collusion anyhow. Or, maybe I'll lay off the hours spent collecting my thoughts, writing a script, then building an entertaining and informative video. Fun fact, we're viewer supported here so our incentive is to honestly share our thoughts with our supporters, not bend truth in thanks to a corporation for "access". If I get the chance to borrow one for a more in depth test I'll continue to share my honest thoughts with our viewers and Toyota but like I said in this video... I have zero plans to buy one.

Since the Chinese are planning to purchase Stellantis, Jeep is toast so these Toyotas should flourish.
