Julian looks like the coolest man alive. Music is raw garage rock.

Please do more Strokes! Julian is a musical mastermind and wrote everything on their first 3 albums except for a few select songs, it's also super interesting to watch their sound evolve over all of their albums too!

The Tom Petty reference is to American Girl. The melody and drum beat are pretty darn similar.

Tom Petty wrote a song called Last Night for the Travelling Wilburys. But yeah, there's a touch of American Girl to this song. You might like American Girl by the way Syed!

Sounds like a demo version of the tune my friend. Check out the album track, not as jaunty and more flavor. 🤘🏻

As soon as the vocals kicked in, you can tell it’s not the usual version. Sounds a little like his voice on sandpaper.

He was watching the music video, which was performed live instead of lip syncing with the album track.

Julian Casablancas is heavily inspired by Lou Reed which might be the 'old music sound" you refer to.

I feel like the Strokes and a few other bands in the 00s were a second coming of punk music almost.

Great reaction as always! Would love to see you do more from them as well as Televison who I believe had a huge influence on their sound

A band you may want to check out from the last 30 years is WILCO. Born from the group Uncle Tupelo in the late 80s into the 90s. The founders Jay Ferrar and Jeff Tweedy split into SON VOLT and WILCO. Wilco is considered an avante guard rock band.

This group was a breath of fresh air after the late 90s boy band craze. This was more rockish than most of the top 10 at the time.

The Tom Petty referrence is good. The vocalist has a slightly drunk, attitude, and off time swagger.

Yeah I think it's the live version.. The Strokes might have an offputting sound at first (on the album he uses a special effect on his vocals) but I definitely think they're great. One song I could recommend to you next would be Someday.. great song, I think you'll dig it.

This is the official music video version, in the video they actually performed the song live instead of pretending to be playing over the studio track.

You have to put in context when this came out and how many bands they influenced after my guy. It may sound more standard now but was revolutionary at the time

Now you have to hear the studio version, they sound kind of drunk in this one, lol. Not bad but the album version is much better.

This isn't the album version is it? I think the album version is better. At the time, this record reminded me of New Wave music from the early 80s, when I first started listening to music. It sounded nostalgic and modern at the same time, which is really appealing. I've heard bits and pieces of The Strokes since and haven't loved what I've heard but I like the first album a lot. In fact, I'm going to put it on the turntable now. It's one of those albums where you don't need to like anything else the band's done, just one LP is enough. I don't think there's a bad track on it.

This is the music video version of the song. Unlike most videos, for this one they actually played the song live instead of pretending to be playing while the album version of the track plays over them.

Aside from the punk influence -- and as someone mentioned above some reference to the band Television -- this also harkens back to 60s garage bands (who also influenced punk). I never see much reference to 60s garage-rock on these reaction channels, but they had a kind of sloppy, DIY feel and are just great fun (but usually one hit wonders). As for the vocals, he has that unique, debauched, one-of-a-kind voicees that I would also credit to Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and David Johansen of the New York Dolls. I instantly loved this when it came out because I need this kind of go-for-broke energy in music when I'm in that mood and this hits it, yet manages to sound fresh. This also started a mini revival of fun, raw rock music that you can stick the White Stripes and others into.

You want to check out "Laid" by James for modern music with drum beats familiar to the 1960's.

You should definitely listen to some Tom Petty. I can see the connection to the Strokes, though it hadn't occurred to me before you mentioned it. They more common comparison would be '60s garage rock, which gives them that "vintage" sound.

It's definitely retro in its sound, borrowing from Tom Petty's "American Girl" and from the more melodic punk songs of the 1980s. But it's undeniablly exuberant -- just a really good pop song.

Too repetitive. The studio version is about the same with this repetitiveness. The guitar solo is okay but nothing that makes your emotions stand up. The elements are there but not as edgy as it promises to be. Yes, the Petty comments I agree 💯.
