Created entirely in guitarist Tom Scholz's basement. He wrote the songs, played all the instruments and later invited Brad Delp to add his powerful vocals. The record company didn't even know this initially. Scholz eventually had to form an actual band for touring purposes.

Tom Scholz MIT engineer who invented his own electronic equipment and recording techniques to get the sounds he wanted for his songs. He recorded demos in his home studio while working at Polaroid. These demos attracted the interest of Epic Records, who signed Scholz and singer Brad Delp to a recording contract. Scholz believed his demos were good enough for release as Boston's debut album, but Epic told Scholz to re-record the demos. Epic did not want the album recorded entirely in Scholz's home as Scholz had intended (the label suggested using a recording studio), but most of what ended up on the album had indeed been recorded by Scholz in his basement because it would have been difficult to recreate the effects in another studio not to mention his OCD level desire for perfecting the sound.

Rick Beato did an episode on what makes this song great. You can hear Delp’s vocals isolated. It will blow you away how good he is. He double tracked all the vocal parts (recorded them twice) to add depth. Both tracks are so nearly identical it’s uncanny. Next I’d say Peace of Mind (more hand clapping!) and Hitch a Ride. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5-pf6dqqcx1gJI

In the Rick Beato analysis when he isolates the note Delp hits at the 7:00 minute mark in this video for the away in “she slipped away-aaaay” is remarkable when he shows that delp hits that last highest note at the end of the sustained away and it matches the guitar note perfectly. Not many can hit an even higher note after holding a high note that long.

I worked for Boston from 1976-1979. (along with Aerosmith, the Cars, and the J. Geils Band) when they all rehearsed at the Music Complex on Fresh Pond Parkway in Cambridge, Ma. where I grew up. It's only about 4 miles from Watertown where Tommy Scholz recorded the debut album from his basement studio. Tom was working for the Polaroid corp. at the time, where he was an engineer. He had his engineering degree from MIT in Cambridge. He played every instrument on the record except the drums. He used Jim Masdea for that. Tom didn't start playing the guitar until he reached his early 20's, but he was already a classically trained pianist. He knew he had to get a band together though. He already knew guitarist Barry Goudreau. They were in a band together when Tom was at MIT. He ended up getting Brad Delp on vocals. When John Boylan from Epic Records came calling, he agreed to sign and record them out in Los Angeles. Tom said it had to be done his way, and in his basement studio. Boylan origionally said no, and headed for the door. He had a change of heart, and came back. He told Tom that he could record it his way, and that they'd split the producers fee. The rest is history guys. They got Fran on bass, Sib on drums, and that was the starting lineup. When they'd rehearse at the Complex, we always had to carry this enormous black trunk inside for Tom. He used to call it "The Big M" Why, I have no idea. But it contained a huge computer/keyboard type thing in it. This was before Tom had invented the "Rockman". The Big M was how he got that "Boston Sound". There's no doubt whatsoever. Tom Scholz is a genius! They were all a great bunch of guys, but Brad was certainly something very special. He was such a nice, nice man. Very soft hearted. When you spoke to him you'd never expect that amazing voice to come out of him. I mean, that man could hit some notes! I miss him. He was obviously suffering inside, and nobody knew. At least I don't think anyone did. Maybe Pam (his girlfriend) did. I don't know. Anyway, I'm sure you know that Boston's debut album was the top selling debut album of all time until Guns & Roses topped it. It was released on August 25th, 1976, and has sold almost 20 million copies to date I believe. Maybe something around 17 to 18 million.(almost 20) That's incredible! Great guys, great album!

The word that comes to my mind about this record is pristine. The minute I heard it, I thought "frame it and hang it on the wall." It's a gleaming sword that catches the light before that crunching guitar stabs me in the heart. Paradoxically raw and refined, I cannot resist it's charm some 40 plus years later. One for the ages, as they say.

Tom Schulz is an MIT grad. Most of the recordings were of such high quality that they were used on the album. Dave Grohl did along the same with the Foo Fighters in the 90's, did it all, then had to actually put a band together. The drummer for Boston, Sib ( I apologize, can't recall his full name ) has passed on a while back. His daughter is married to Dwayne " the Rock " Johnson. If I recall her name is Aja, named after the Steely Dan song.

Vivid memories of this band & debut album. In August, 1976, I was doing the 7-midnight shift at WFMF-FM 102/Baton Rouge, LA. A box of new LPs arrived one day late that month, exactly 44 years ago! Included was a "teaser" promo only radio sampler album from Epic Records, featuring two cuts apiece from the debut albums of 4 of the label's new signings: Boston, Mother's Finest (mixed race rock/funk band formerly on RCA), Herb Pedersen (country rocker once performed with Chris Hillman & Desert Rose Band), and Jim Peterik (former Ides of March and Survivor member, and writer of "Vehicle" and "Eye of the Tiger"). Their actual albums would follow in a few days, but I took the sampler album home that night, and this song led off the album. While the other three acts had their moments on their respective albums (all three are worth digging into musically, Daniel's viewers!), none had anything even closely resembling the career or quality of recorded output as Boston. it was fun to have been a small part of the radio community who turned the Louisiana capitol on to Boston! Good job, Daniel!

Boston, especially this first album, were a phenomenal band, and quite a game changer when this album came out in 76. I will never forget hearing these songs at the local swimming pool, that summer! It’s hard to go wrong with any song from either of the two first albums, and even the third album, Third Stage. That sound is timeless. Just have to say, you remind me so much of another super talented musician, Jeff Buckley! If you haven’t checked him out before, you definitely should! If nothing else, it’s a guarantee you’ve surely already heard his version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, in all kinds of movies and tv shows.

Yep, Tom Scholz took apart gadgets that he figured out how they worked at MIT and then re-invented them to get the sounds for voice and music. The entire album was produced in his basement, and he played ALL instruments, dubbing them in. He later recruited Delp and the others for the vocals, Epic Records took his recordings and cut them in their studios, and the rest was history. I was a Junior in HS when this album came out, and everyone was blown away by the sound they produced...truly a historic moment in Rock and Roll History. Tom not only designed his own equipment, he started a successful electronics company and sold a lot of his inventions. The Rockman was his biggest seller. It is a box that fits on your belt that gives you all the guitar sounds on the first album. Many rock bands used one to record their own albums. If you play he also built a power soak. That lets you crank up your Big Marshall stack to still get that big saturated sound but keeps the volume down to where you won't blow the neighborhood out.

Tom Scholz has an electrical engineering degree from MIT and was working for Polaroid while making this album in his basement on a 12 track analog recorder and yes he built most or all the effects Google rockman effects by SRD

Daniel, Boston came onto the scene when I was your age. It wasn't a party unless Boston was on the stereo.

Tom Stoltz MIT engineer made his own studio and electronics ( yes!) In his basement played all instruments except drums and brought in Brad Delp for vocals!

Awesome pick! Someone mentioned Rick Beato's video of What Makes This Song Great. He did this one and Hitch a Ride (my favorite Boston song). You have to hear Delp's isolated vocals. The man was superhuman, as Rick describes him and I agree. So many layers in these songs, so much perfection. Tom Scholz is a genius.

One of my favorite (and one of the best) rock songs of all time. And while I'm pretty sure the following songs have all been recommended to you in others' postings by now (but just in case they haven't) you should most definitely check out "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos from 1972, "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, and "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. All three of these songs are over seven minutes long, all three have masterful guitar playing in them, and all three are worth every second of your time, I promise.

Read the liner notes to their Third Stage album if you want to be blown away. It was recorded during the early to mid 80s on analog equipment, but was one of the first CD releases. I love the third album personally.

True story: I was playing guitar and bass for a cover band out of San Francisco. Made the mistake of falling for the girl singer. It was like a meteor: hot, bright and did not last. This song was getting lots of airplay. I listened to it a lot... and cried... a lot.

THE BEST debut rock album in history. This album warrants a complete listen from start to finish. Brad Delp had tremendous vocal. range. Tom Sholtz was an MIT engineering graduate and yes he built his own recording studio in his basement. To understand what that means, in 2020 setting up your own recording studio is possible and relatively easy if you have a computer and the software, in 1976 it was not that easy, the technology in 1976 that was needed was tape equipment and a mixing board of some sort, all of which cost a lot of money. The quality of the recording of this album is on par with the best equipment money can buy today. Listen to the entire album, it’s a masterpiece. \m/ Stay Metal \m/

This is the sound of success. This album to date has sold over one billion copies world wide! No other band has ever sold that many albums. Boston is a feel good vibe that captured the world! If you want to make the big bucks in music, study Boston and what they did.

Late chiming in but Boston was amazing and unique, Those songs and recordings that Tom and his buddies made were so good that none of us cover bands could do their songs, and we really wanted to, but where do you find a Brad Delp when you really need one?
