@@CrystalMarieShannon what’s funnier is how I got there. I was in the U.K. (around Aldershot/Farnham) on business and my birthday fell on a Saturday. Feeling sort of alone-ish, I decided to drift into London and see what that was all about… which was daunting at first because I had no idea how their currency worked except abstractly 😛 Caught a train. Ended up at Waterloo. Started walking. No phone battery (whoops! 🥴) so no maps. Met some Queen’s guards (by accident-they didn’t yell at me). Trifalger. Got lost in Chinatown. Figured I go see Abbey Road and get a pic crossing the street like the album cover. Welp… that’s a few miles away from where I was. But I was alone so I didn’t know any better. Took my shoes off (like McCartney) but it was the dead of winter… no matter. I dodged some cars and got the shot nearly freezing my feet off. Stumbled around St. John’s Woods, ended up in Regent’s park by chance and Hyde Park by accident going back to Waterloo station. Found myself suddenly surrounded by a bunch load of people and couldn’t figure out why. So I’m just sorta trying to plow through it and I ask a chap what the hell was going on and he tells me I’m in the midst of the global Women’s March (this was one day after Trump’s inauguration). Go figure. Back to Piccadilly. Crossed the Thames. Saw Battersea Station (Pink Floyd’s “Animals” cover) from the train. Almost missed Farnham Station. Exhausted. Fell into a pub near my hotel. THAT was my birthday. All sorts of rock history absorbed that day. 😎

Hi Crystal! The girl with flowers in her hair is Joni Mitchell. Going to California was Zeppelin's shout out to her. Love that drum pattern on When the Levee Breaks, it was a staple among the first generation of hip hop samples. For my money, the best Zeppelin album. You're great as always, love the reaction and passion. Cheers!

“Misty Mountain Hop” is my favorite track from this album. It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but that’s my jam. Every song on this is a banger. After The Beatles broke up, as sad as it was, it did help usher in new bands for the 1970s. It was a new decade and new sounds were being created. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen, etc. It was a heavier rock sound that was aided and abetted by modern technology. But it worked. 🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️

such an excellent selection of a favorite! love it! I don’t think it’s too hard to tell what my favorite is! ohh every time I think about the beatles breaking up I can’t help but to think of what else they could’ve given us the possibilities are endless but I guess it’s not only pointless but heartbreaking to think about that 🥹🩵 very grateful for all of those bands though! each one brings something unique to the table musically and continues to change the landscape!

I LOVE that you did this album, Crystal! And, as always, you remain my favorite music reactor on KZbin. Please keep going with all the Zeppelin studio albums. They're one of the few bands where every album is worthwhile and a different journey than their previous record. Zeppelin is only an inch behind my favorite band of all time (The Beatles.) So, hearing you react to each band is such a treat. Keep up the amazing work!

Awesome, I'm so glad you're back on the LZ trek. This album may be their best, but there are still some amazing albums still to come. When the Levee Breaks is an old blues song from the 1920s, written about a real catastrophic flood that happened in (I think) Tennessee. The drum intro is iconic - Beastie Boys (among others) sampled it on one of their songs. Levee is one of my top 5 LZ songs, along with Ramble On, Stairway and two others you haven't gotten to yet. Great reaction as always!

You did a great job! I just want to mention that Robert Plant has done two albums with Allison Krause. To see them do Black Dog, When the Levee Breaks, and Rock & Roll live in the genre of country\blue grass is a hoot. The two have won eight Grammy’s together. The live performances are on KZbin. They’ve also been on PBS. My ears are still ringing from seeing Led Zeppelin live at the Capital Center (no longer exists) in high school. Those were crazy times. To be able to see Led Zeppelin, Yes, McCartney and Wings, ELO, Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Moody Blues…we didn’t even consider how special that was back then! May I make a suggestion? When you hit progressive rock (yes, roundabout as an example), get out the headphones! You mentioned Boston? But that begins with a B and not a C! 😂😂😂 Have an amazing weekend!

Thanks for the "Diminished" explanation--that makes sense and your playing examples illustrate it well! "When the Levee Breaks" is actually a cover version of a blues song from the early 20th century, describing a flood on the Mississippi River. There's a video of the original artists (Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy) performing it on KZbin. The original was played on an acoustic guitar and some of the lyrics were re-done by LZ.

First time I heard When the Levee Breaks I was just.... flabbergasted. How can such a sexy instrumental go along with such sad desperate lyrics? Was that an accident? Fully intentional? As in what? A perfect yin and yang balancing act? None of the questions - I feel like there's no hope for an answer. Yet this song stills takes me places. I think it will till the day that I die.

Hearing this always brings me back to my teenage years in the 1970s! Such a great time to be interested in music and listening to the music that was evolving and coming out at that time!! When you heard on the radio that a favorite band was releasing an album, you would hear a single, or two maybe, from that album but that would be the only thing that you had!! It wasn't like today where you could go on Spotify or whatever platform and get a sample of the entire album before you even buy it!! But you were always confident that the band you loved would not disappoint!! Using Led Zeppelin as our example, they released their first album in January of 1969 and released Houses of the Holy, which was their fifth album, in March of 1973!! So you basically had an album coming out every nine months!! It was the same for most of the popular bands in those days!! It was always fun to anticipate the next album!!

"Misty Mountain Hop" resolves to a seventh chord in the chorus, iirc. So the resoluation retains some twang, as it were. Dig the play with the beat pattern in the verses. It foreshadows the time signature play in "Four Sticks". "Going to California" is the calm before the storm of "When The Levee Breaks". The line about the girl "with love in her eyes and flowers, in her hair" evokes the Hippie movement that arose from the Summer of Love in San Francisco in 1967. The second and third verse of "Going to California" make more sense when taken as an ode to the earthquakes we have here in California. "The mountains and the canyons start to tremble and shake..." Yes, a levee like the levee you drive your Chevy too. 😃 And that is Robert Plant on harmonica. Dig how the shuffle in the bridge disrupts the hypnotic charge of the minor dirge that drives most of the song with some major chord carnage -- "Oh, don't it make you feel bad \ When you're trying to find your way home \ You don't know which way to go \ If you're going down south, they got no work to do \ If you're going north to Chicago\ Ah, ah, ah, hey" ... "When the Levee Breaks" was recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929.
