My instinct is that Catherine O'Hara saying, "What did you do?" is deceptively edited together with Joel's confession here, because Catherine O'Hara is wearing a full face of makeup, earrings, etc. I'm not saying it's impossible that they have these things in Jackson, buuuut my feeling is that this clip of her is set pre-outbreak. Which, to me, makes it more likely that she's the Seraphite Prophet, and she's in multiple episodes because they'll be sprinkling in flashbacks about post-outbreak Seattle, the rise of the Seraphites and the WLF, the overthrow of FEDRA, etc. Or, crackpot theory: she was Joel's therapist pre-outbreak (remember those anxiety meds?), and he's hallucinating her as he goes on some inner mind journey wrestling with his guilt over lying to Ellie. Joel flashbacks within the Ellie flashbacks. We have to go deeper!

(I also wonder if the shot of Ellie screaming in what looks like a hospital bed might also be a Joel dream sequence or something. Him imagining Ellie crying out for him as she's forced into the operating theatre, because imagining that she wanted or would have wanted to be saved makes it easier for him to tell himself he did the right thing? Which is definitely a huge departure from game Joel, whose lack of GAF over whether saving Ellie was The Right Thing™ defines him as a character in Part II, but... Joel and HBOel are very different characters.)

Like all the die-hards, my heart jumped at the teaser's final line. What I love most, though, is that we're already seeing how the show runners and actors can pull the material in slightly different directions. "I saved her": Troy-Joel stares Tommy down and puts a defiant edge on that line, like he really is 100% ready to "do it all over again." He owns it. Pedro-Joel, who tends project more vulnerability, seems much less sure of himself, like he's saying it aloud-each syllable carefully enunciated, not just stressing "saved"-in an effort to believe it. Give. Me. More.

seeing the seraphites in action is SOO COOL i dont think that theyre meant to be lev and yara, i think theyre the seraphites ellie encounters during day 2. i feel like theyre definitely laying this out like the game, where s2 is gonna be ellies seattle days and the next season will be abby's, bc we mostly see stuff relating to ellie's days in this trailer, but we also saw isaac really early!! so who knows how this is gonna go. i hope we see a longer trailer in the upcoming months.. i'm really hoping for an early 2025 release bc i don't know how long i can wait!!!

As always people are already hating and being so negative, so many people are upset that Joel seems to be talking to the new character who seems to be like a therapist over Tommy and are making assumptions from this teaser thinking it’s going to be awful because Tommy doesn’t know what Joel did. But I never understand why people are so negative from short edited together clips when that’s all we have 😭. We still don’t know anything really. He could still talk to Tommy, we literally have no idea. And as you said we have the game still, they aren’t going to throw Tommy to the side like how people are acting.

It's probably more efficient to shoot as much of the Jackson stuff back-to-back as possible - to get the best use out of the location, but also so everyone in flashbacks looks the age they look at the start of S1, before any further timejumps/gaps between seasons, and to get all of Pedro's filming done. Even if they're holding some scenes back for S3, they presumably have a clear idea of when in the narrative they want to place them, and the dance scene is short enough that the script probably won't vary too much from the game version.

Another possilble character that Catherine O'hara might be playing is Esther. Esther was going to be Joel's girlfriend, but was removed from the game early in development. This teaser does give more therapist vibes, though. With Tommy having a kid in the show (assuming the kid survives), he would have good reason to not go to Seattle, and I thought Esther could potentially fill the role that Tommy played in the game.

I'm curious to see how much of the Prologue they'll stitch together, like will they include the Party and Dina's kiss or will they follow the game and save it for later on. I think they are super protecting the actress given the intense backlash about her casting as Abby. I was unsure myself, but after reading an article breaking down the casting more, I agree with the choice for this adaptation. She was everyone’s first pick to play Ellie. For that reason, she is a great choice for Abby. Bella is Ellie through and through, someone who would be a good counter and mirror to such a strong Ellie would be someone who can be the other side of that same coin. Which has always been the two’s dynamic, two sides of the same coin.

Do we have casting information for Lev or Jerry Anderson? I think it would be really cool if they actually used Ian Alexander for Lev and Derek Phillips for Jerry. Not only because they did the voice work but also because I just love both of them as actors. Ian might be too old now to play Lev... but he's so skinny and tiny. With a shaved head, he'd look like a kid. And Derek Phillips... I just love him. He's got such a sweetness to him but he can also be kind of a dick and a bad ass. He can definitely play a complex and conflicted character, even if it isn't much screen time. It's worth noting that he even voiced the doctor in the original game when he was only a 5 second seemingly meaningless character... and then they went as far as to use not just his voice but his likeness in the sequel. (They kind of used Ian's likeness as well. I knew it was him immediately when Lev was introduced)

I wonder if they are baiting us to think the therapist is talking to Joel but she is actually talking to Abby. Like when Abby returns from Jackson and Isaac wants Abby to be his Protoge Lieutenant and he want some kind of psychoanalysis of her. Like when Catherine O'Hara ask if you hurt her? She could be asking Abby if she also hurt or murdered Ellie. I like the idea that Abby and Isaac will have same mirrored toxic relationship as Joel and Ellie. I just want Abby and Ellie to realise that a Father figures Can suck and be toxic. I also wonder if we are going to get a version of Abby who kinda hates her dad, or atleast sees him as weak, And part of her story is to disconnect from her toxic Father-like relationship with Isaac. I Can imagine him encourage Abby to commit murder as revenge because thats basically what Isaac is All for, his enmity with the Seraphites. That also works so Well for Ellie And Joels story, like you have to remember the good parts of your “Father” and honor the goodness, like how Jerry was a Doctor and wanted to Help People = Abby and Lev Joins the Fireflies ect. and Joel was a dad who just wanted to be there for his kid = “Ellie goes back to Dina and JJ” Bc the best way you Can Honor Joel is to atleast remember and honor the way He was before the Outbreak, even after the horrendous things he did. And Symbolically He finally Can rest Easy because He has found a Daughter “Ellie” who Can forgive him for his actions, something Joel was unable to get from Sarah. PS not to get too fanfic. But i See TLOU2 as an allegory to coming out to a Homophobic Parent. If JJ asked Ellie who Joel was She would be able to say -He was a man who taught me how to play the Guitar.

@@tlou_explained seems I touched a nerve, ngl, but yes, moody and ungrateful are indeed the choice words, and I used those words because whether you think she’s adult enough or not, she’s a teenager who has a reductionist viewpoint on a complex moral dilemma that she didn’t have conscious awareness of or ability to weigh in on. She likes making choices for herself throughout the first game, and all Joel did was reinstate her ability to choose for herself. irl there is an impossibly low chance that humanity will ever become extinct to this, and an even lower chance of vaccination being a viable option. So if we go by those metrics, Marlene saying “he thinks* he can make a cure” (hbo show) isn’t good enough a reason to rob someone of their entire life, and for what? A hunch? Especially so considering your surgeon is a veterinarian who lied* about his exp to get favour with a group that’s been entrenched with failure since the start of the game 😂 How she “feels” is much different than what actually is. And what that situation actually is*, is one where she was recovered, kept under, and almost subjected to a life altering medical procedure that might not even work. And what’s more, say she green lights all this: Do You think the fireflies have the infrastructure or means in general to get this vaccine to what’s left? If it even works? I’d say that’s an even better question with an obvious answer.

The ins and outs of what the Fireflies were doing and could have achieved don't matter. Ellie wasn't given enough information before or afterwards in order to formulate an informed opinion or choice. Joel LIED to her from the get-go, he didn't explain his reasoning as you did in your previous comment, and the two of them didn't have any meaningful conversations about what happened because by the time Ellie found out the truth her faith and trust in Joel were completely shattered. Maybe she could have come to understand after their last conversation but he was killed the next day. People doing as you're doing, which is to dismiss her feelings which inform her entire arc in part 2, is part of why there's such a fundamental lack of understanding of Ellie's journey in this game, and it's ironic because adults underestimating and infantilizing her is exactly what got her into that position in the first place. Joel had his reasons for doing what he did but he never EXPLAINED them to her, so she was left to draw her own conclusions, spurned by his obvious LIE.

@@tlou_explained I have in no way tried to justify the lie, im justifying Joel’s action of removing her from the hospital at the end of the first game by using their final interaction as a jumping off point. I agree that it was wrong to lie to her too, I don’t know where that’s coming from. If it’s reductive and infantile of me to say that, then it’s equally as such for her to call him an asshole before he died, you know what I mean? she called him that in their final scene because she “felt” she was robbed of meaning. The LIE is not what bothered her deep down. it’s the fact that she feels her death could possibly had made a difference. Not to mention that viewpoint of “my life could have fucking mattered” in itself is very concerning. To think her life has no meaning after part 1 is incredibly short sighted given the fact that she matters to Joel, dinah, Jesse, Tommy, Maria, and everyone else in Jackson. And about the fireflies. The ins and outs are a driving force behind why they even make the trip in the first place 😂 if all that doesn’t matter then why make her go at all? So they’re just going to make the cure than collectively stare at it? You don’t think any other part of the vaccine manufacturing process is as important as making it in the first place? Lmao There Would be no LIE told to anyone if they didn’t dangle the carrot of a vaccine to us at the start of the game. Their failures are well deserving of scrutiny here and all play a part into the moral dilemma that Joel faced. And she did not raise herself 💀, she was raised in a FEDRA school where her only two choices were fit in or fuck off after being dumped there by the woman who was entrusted with her safety and well being. She didn’t teach herself any basic life skills (I.e. read or write) so I’d maybe ask for some clarification in re: to what you mean by “she raised herself” Outside of that I think you’ll be surprised to know I largely agree with your analysis in re: to her character arc in pt2, and again, Abby in general. But in re: to her view on joel, I’d say she needed to think about things a little more 😂. She’s still a teenager, and I don’t personally know any teenager that can accurately navigate a dilemma like that so easily. Like you said yourself (to which I paraphrase) “she expected Joel to be around until she was ready to forgive him” and that is exactly the kind of short sightedness that a typical teenager would have. @@chrisbaroni3351 she called him an asshole because he was being nice to her about Dina, and she was still trying to be angry at him haha. of course her life still matters- part of Ellie's tragedy is that she doesn't see that. she also doesn't realise Joel saved her bc he loves her, not just because he wants her to stand in place of the daughter he lost. luckily by the end of the game, after reflecting on their final conversation, she finally gets it, and accepts the gift he gave her. as for the fireflies, I meant that whether or not they could distribute the vaccine doesn't matter to Ellie's feelings about how that whole thing went down, and it doesn't matter with regard to Joel's choice to save her. he didn't give af about the vaccine, possible or not. Ellie believed, and Joel and Marlene and Jerry all believed, that it would have worked. if anything the fans who claim the vaccine never would have worked are the ones negating their entire quest in the first place. by raised herself, I meant that she didn't have a parental figure in her life looking out for her. she lived at a military-run orphanage and was brought up to be a soldier- Marlene brought her there as a baby and watched over her at a distance. Ellie was independent all her life, which is why I'm resistant to the idea that Joel or any other adult had any right to make huge life decisions for her. imagine being alone for fourteen years and then some dude shows up and starts calling all the shots in your life. it's just not cool imo. I just think Ellie's personhood often goes overlooked by a lot of people in this fandom- not saying you did that, but dismissing her incredibly complex feelings and traumas as being moody and ungrateful, as you said, touched a nerve. she has flaws and shortcomings just like any good character, and her feelings and experiences are valid and her behaviour understandable, even if it's not always rational.

As someone who was unfortunately in the middle of TLOU Twitter ‘fandom’ when the game dropped I’m definitely just saying my bit here and staying out of it. Ellie will always be my favorite Video game character, she helped me discover my true self. Though I will always love Abby too, especially taking in Lev 🏳️‍🌈 Yes what happened to Joel sucked but everyone just turning on Abby without caring what happened to her father have a lack of empathy. I’d even describe some of the people I came across in that time to be borderline narcissistic. I’ll always love this franchise, it destroys me emotionally every time I replay it like RDR/2, I just wish that everyone could get along but we don’t so yep. Thanks, going to listen to Pearl Jam now.
