That beautiful harmony is very typical of country songs primarily because the vast majority of country singers got their start in church singing gospel music and people who sing in church or who sing gospel music were taught to harmonize at a very young age. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs, who are singing with Vince, also got their start singing gospel music and I believe that is largely responsible for their amazing harmony. This song was written by Vince when his brother died and is probably played at funerals more than any other song. Amazing Grace used to be the number one song that people requested be played at a funeral and Go Rest High was number two but I think that order may be reversed now and Go Rest High may be number one. My husband died 10 years ago and this is one of the songs I had played at his funeral. Very beautiful song by three singers who have beautiful voices. If you want to hear another Vince Gill song with beautiful harmony (again by Patty Loveless) listen to "When I Call Your Name"

@@jefftappan381 No, it was in tribute to his real brother who , if I'm not mistaken, committed suicide. He wrote it and sang it at his funeral, I believe. I could be wrong about having sang it at his brother's funeral but the song was definitely made because of his brother.

The song was indeed originally started after Keith Whitley passed away (1989), Vince shelved it unfinished. When his older brother Bob passed away from a heart attack in 1993, he began to finish it and finally released the track in 1995. It won two Grammy Awards in 1996, one being for "Best County Song."

This song is the real deal. Real country harmonies. And Vince Gill not only can sing, he's an amazing guitar player as well. He can also play mandolin, fiddle and a little bit of banjo too. He has an impressive collection of guitars. Lost some a few years ago when there was a flood that damaged the building they were stored in. The man can sing AND play. You also should check out When I Call Your Name and I Still Believe in You. Probably his best songs.

This song stirs emotion in me. The mother of my oldest two children passed away almost two years ago. Although we divorced 26 years ago she stayed a very dear friend. I didn't make it to her funeral but I got to see her a few months before she passed. In a few days I will visit my #2 son. I haven't seen him since before his mom passed. He and his wife have a new baby now and they named her after his mother. Living so far away, I haven't had to deal with her passing but here in a few days I'll be have to have with it. Thanks to this song I'm already in tears. Thank you for reacting to such a beautiful song.

Country music speaks to the heart and soul. It ranges from the happiest moments (forever and ever amen) to the lowest (I have friends in low places) and everything in between. Most of the older songs in the genre (can't stand new country) have an element of heart in them that pop music just lacks.

Vince Gill started writing the song initially to honor Keith Whitley, another great country singer. Hence the line "you were no stranger to the rain," which was the title of a Keith Whitley song. However, he finished and performed the song to honor his brother after he died. Vince Gill also performed this song at George Jones' memorial service. He was in so much emotional pain that he couldn't actually sing. His female duet partner, Patty Loveless, had to take over while Vince simply played the guitar to compose himself. One of the most heartwrenching performances I have ever watched.

Vince Gill is said to be one of the best guitarists of the 21st Century. He’s said to be right up there with Eric Clapton. For me, he’s the only person who can actually make his guitar sound as if it’s weeping. It takes true talent to do this. Also should be said it takes TRUE love for music to be able to bring emotion out, as if in a painting. You should really hear the one with the electric guitar. And it’s not just this one.
