Colnago is smart to play on their heritage and high end, unique products. I'm sure this is sold out already. It's far better strategy than trying to make another carbon bike, lost in the crowd.

It is a lot of money, but when you consider the components and wheels are at least $6K and it is a novel custom design, it is not that surprising. These bikes are not for production. They are collectors items for people who will ride them a bit and own a bit of history, and also opportunities for designers and engineers to develop new products. In that regard, I see a new product: A custom builder offering a unique seamless look without spending a huge amount of time filing and polishing because all of the joints are butted together and the tube is fitted over the lug, not inside it. You just polish out the soldering along the flat surface. Possibly, it could save a lot of shop work (and tooling cost) and the unique frame command a higher price in the custom market. I can even see Columbus offering a curved top tube like a Roubaix or Sworks. Right now, it seems that 3D printing those custom lugs is too expensive. But if they cast 20 or so different lugs, then it might be more cost effective to offer it to frame builders. It could be a modernized steel bike for leisure riding and I certainly don't think the 1 kg of extra weight is a problem, especially since it is not a race bike. It is not at all unusual for a high end custom steel bike (e.g. Saffron, Victoire) to be priced around $10K, and there are even carbon race bikes costing this much which will provide a less comfortable ride!

@bengt_axle24 күн бұрын
Buy a used frame first, as close as possible in size to your needs. It can be aluminium. Then spec it with the crank size, stem and bars and just ride it until the fit feels very good. Change the stems and position a few mm to understand how your position affects your performance (particularly the saddle setback, since it will affect your weight balance on the bike). Once you understand and feel the difference, you'll be in a better position to order a custom or steel titanium bike, by copying your best position. The seatpost angle and head angle and top tube may be the most important decisions in a custom frame, but it is really our position, core strength and morphology that defines what it should be. The money you spend on testing out your best position on the road, will be returned to you when you have a perfectly fitting custom bike that you won't have to sell or upgrade. For example, you can get an extra long or short head tube to eliminate spacers under the stem or a shortened chain stay (405mm) to make it accelerate faster in a crit race.

I won't mind the absence of a paint job (naked stainless steel looks great imho) but it's that they built it using that stupid modern geometry. Why is the top tube not parallel to the ground? Ernesto doesn't put his name on the bike anymore and doesn't have anything to do with development of new products.
