I got a new housing for my turbo; this is now a BorgWarner S360 with a .63 T3 housing on it.
I had a .83 before that someone had modified from a S256... this is /much/ better.
I've been told that the .63 would be too tight, but it seems 'right' for this application.

That sounds so amazing, it looked like it was hittin 25psi. That thing spools like crazy

Totally missed this comment. In the days after this video, I found that it would hit 30-ish PSI easily, and totally clean up my RD2-110 IP. I'm guessing it could put out 300-ish at the wheels with this setup. Throw a bigger pump on there and it'd put out quite a bit more than that, provided the rest of the engine stays together. Unfortunately, just after I got it tuned in, I drove it a good 100 miles on Friday night. I shut it off, and it was fine. Fired it up while still warm, took it for a quick drive later that evening... just fine. Started it up Saturday morning... It ran on about 6 cylinders and then threw a rod(!). In the driveway. With no boost or anything. My guess is something went wrong with how it was built, considering it was only rebuilt a year ago. So far this project is on hold until the weather gets nicer; I've got another 7.3 long block available and like 3 6.9s I could play with.

Sounds like you could use some r&d forged psd rods and a rd180 pump haha. That would really light er up. Awesome truck though

Basically... Yes. What I'd *like* do do is build a 6.9, upsize the head bolts to 9/16 and use grade 10 socket head cap screws. Use forged PSD rods and modify them myself(I'm a machinist, so I ought to be able to do it). I'm definitely going to talk to Justin about the pump - I'd be looking at either a 150 or 180, or some in-between pump. I don't want to lose the streetability of it, so I might go with a 150 and tweak it up a bit. I mean.... what good is a 400HP IDI if you can't daily drive it and tow with it? That being said, I might also just throw a set of rings and such into a 7.3 long block I have and just throw that in for now. Still need the 150+ CC pump though.

You are a smart man. This mod improves the durability of the truck. I am not ok to wind my rpm up to 2500 to gain 5 or 6 psi. Putting a smaller exhaust housing allows for a quicker spool.

Yes and no. It is nice to have good spooling and torque down low, but these engines are designed to run 2500-3K all day long. It took me several years to realize that - you'll see that in my earliest videos I was staying under 2K RPM most of the time. Now, I wind it out to 3k under heavy acceleration all the time. The motor likes it a lot more. Heck, the best way to keep your engine running good is to hook a big heavy load behind it and get it hot for a couple of hours, pushing 2500RPM all the time. We've done that on various rigs and they always end up running better for a while afterwards. Engine life doesn't seem to be affected by RPM in these - the RPM range is low as it is. If you want to make sure your IDI lasts as long as possible, change the oil very regularly, like every 3K. Just use cheap oil - it's fine. The point is to get all the soot and crud out of the motor and keep it from sludging.

@@MacRobbSimpson I agree. I guess it all depends on what you are using your idi for. I rarely ever tow and when I do, I don't pull that much weight. Driving in town and rarely ever going beyond 2200 rpm dosent call for a turbo that starts to spool around 2500 rpm. Talk about mpg. I rather get all my efficiencies at the low end since I barely ever wind that thing up to spool a laggy sidewinder I have on her now.

What was the complete setup in this video? Sounds great.

Lets see: 1. Basic 7.3 IDI non-turbo block 2. BorgWarner S360 turbo with the .63 T3 housing. 3. RD2-110 pump(Pretty sure a bigger pump is in order for this turbo... I'll bet it would produce a *lot* of power) 4. ARP headstuds Other than that... not much, really.

The housing? Great. I've had a number of issues and tests with the truck, but I really like that turbo/housing combination... though I do need to figure out some sound dampening for it. I also did find out that this turbo/housing plus a R&D stage 1 cam is *not* good - the stage 1 cam hurts low-end torque, and makes it really cold blooded. Runs great once you hit like 2300 RPM, though... it acts very much like a tuned 7.3 PSD. I could see it being daily-drivable in this config with an auto trans and high enough stall, but with the stick, it needs more low-end for towing.

did you bolt the BW to your banks up pipe?
@MacRobbSimpson

Yup; T3 housing fit the T3 up-pipe. Unfortunately, you have to rig up just about everything else with adapters.

MacRobb Simpson sweet. I have 093. factory set up. going to intercooler and get 90cc pump with studs. maybe bw turbo since 20+ is out of efficiency range.
@MacRobbSimpson
@MacRobbSimpson 7 жыл бұрын
Unless you are going with a bigger than 90CC pump, don't worry about it. I've got a '93 with factory turbo and 2.5" straight-pipe exhaust that I just installed my 110CC pump on. Ran it on the dyno and put down ~245 RWHP at ~450 ft-lbs of torque, at perhaps 15 PSI, and still had some fuel to spare. That's a very nicely running rig right there - My 110CC pump has an aneroid("Hypermax smoke puff limiter") which limits fuel based on boost. This makes it /really/ easy and fun to drive in town, without creating large clouds of smoke. It also hauls a trailer pretty well, and near as I can figure, I'm averaging 16-17MPG(got 550KM from a full front tank, rated at 19 gallons) Also, I don't have studs in that engine yet...

MacRobb Simpson I'm making 15 psi out of my factory turbo.. max pump. towing a little trailer boggs it down though. even going up a 6% grade empty my egt still get up there. kindve stumped. someone said try timing or lift pump on the forms. the recent vid on my channel shows it. I'd appreciate some advice. thanks !!

What happens when you get up to speed and floor it(or at least give it a bunch of fuel)? Do you get smoke(if yes, what color?)?
