Finally someone doing a proper break in. Many people are scared, they don’t realize that cylinder pressure is actually what helps your rings seat and seal against the cylinder walls. I’m an aircraft mechanic and engine manufacturers specify full manifold pressure for the first 25 hours of break in

Greg, just want to say you have been my inspiration in the miata world since I got mine back in 2015. Ive literally followed all your videos as reference for everything I have done, from a waterpump change to most recently a full motor tear down and rebuild that's lasted me 13k miles and counting. Break-in procedure is sooooo important you guys. Had a friend build a motor and put it straight on the dyno, bearings went out after a few days. Teardown had chromium sludge lining the entire crankcase. "At what mileage did you do the first oil change?" - "I didn't change the oil"
@Bertgarrpin
@Bertgarrpin Жыл бұрын
I dont understand completely the Flyin miata procedure. Its says at the end that you should change the oil every 50 miles until reaching 1000 miles? Is that correct? or its says change it after doing 50 miles everyday driving when you reach 1000 miles.

When heavy diesel truck engines get rebuilt at a proper shop they usually have a 120v or diesel fired coolant heater to get the engine up to temp before the first start. They immediately hook it up to a heavy trailer and go pull hills. Seating the rings immediately like you did is proper for sure!

The best engine start is at full throttle. A Chilean proverb says, "this is broken or destroyed" (se rompe o se raja). When an engine is poorly assembled or the parts can present problems when they are demanded more. It will break whether power is demanded or not, it all depends on time. But when the engine is assembled properly, storms will pass over it before it breaks.
@richardromero6730
@richardromero6730 Жыл бұрын
320 / 5.000 good job, but that gasket will give you cavitation problems, a very prolonged demand with that engine compression that gasket will not be able to transfer heat from the engine block to the cylinder head, causing cavitation. I would have put a high compression metal gasket with at least 3 layers or more.

It's been 18 months since I drove my stock 91 NA (we moved house last spring and the poor car was covered in not-yet-unpacked boxes in it's new garage last summer). So now I have to find a new mechanic to trust, and see if he is willing to do the add-ATF-run-it-for-a-while-and-change-the-oil for lifter tick thing. The good news is that no new mice have moved in, and the car smells mostly of cinnamon oil, the peppermint and mothballs have dispersed. That might change when the heater comes on! Perhaps this year, if I'm diligent, I'll get the odometer above 50,000km. Believe me, I'll try.

Piston rings seal with pressure, only thing you need to be aware is getting the pistons up to temp and just send it. We ran our engines in the dyno from new and they where always fine for use. Not eating oil and very good ring seal. Letting the car coast and pulling vacuum is not helping to seat the rings. Best running stock engines making the most power have been dealer showroom test cars that everyone beat the living crap out of. They are run in well and proper with foot on the floor,
